Paradoxical effects of acute cigarette smoking on plasma antioxidant status in humans

Meta-analysis of the effects of smoking and smoking cessation on triglyceride levels

Smoking increases lipid levels, including triglycerides, leading to increased cardiovascular disease risk. We performed a meta-analysis to quantify the effects of smoking and smoking cessation on triglyceride levels. The PubMed and Scopus databases were searched to identify studies reporting either triglyceride levels in smokers and non-smokers or the effects of smoking cessation on triglyceride levels. Fixed- and random-effects models were used to perform the analyses when three or more studies/comparisons were available. We identified 169 and 21 studies evaluating the effects of smoking and smoking cessation, respectively, on triglyceride levels. Triglyceride levels were 0.50 mmol/L (95% confidence interval: 0.49-0.50 mmol/L) higher in smokers than non-smokers, but the effect differed widely across studies. No statistically significant effect was observed on triglyceride levels between baseline and 6 weeks (mean difference [MD] = 0.02 [-0.09, 0.12] mmol/L), 2 months (MD = 0.03 [-0.21, 0.27] mmol/L), 3 months (MD = 0.08 [-0.03, 0.21] mmol/L), or 1 year (MD = 0.04 [-0.06, 0.14] mmol/L) after quitting. However, a slightly significant decrease in triglyceride levels was observed at 1 month after cessation (MD = -0.15 [-0.15, -0.01] mmol/L). The results of this meta-analysis provide a basis for understanding the effects of smoking and smoking cessation on triglyceride levels, which could have important implications for public health.

Immediate effect of interscapular cupping on blood pressure, oxygen saturation, pulse rate and chest expansion in sedentary smoker students

Objectives

Increased sympathetic stimulation in smokers may be a risk factor for pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases. This study was conducted to assess the immediate effect of interscapular cupping on blood pressure (BP), oxygen (O2) saturation, chest expansion (CE), pulse rate (PR) in sedentary male smoker students.

Methods

Forty sedentary male smoker students– aged 18–25 years -were divided randomly into two equal numbered groups; wet cupping (WC) and dry cupping (DC) groups. Systolic and diastolic BP, upper and lower CE, O2 saturation and PR were measured immediately before and after a single cupping session in both groups.

Results

Both WC and DC types showed improvements in all measurements with a high statistically significant difference (p<0.05).

Conclusions

Interscapular cupping enhanced CE, O2 saturation, BP and PR in sedentary male smoker students.

Maternal active or passive smoking causes oxidative stress in cord blood

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of active and passive maternal smoking on cord blood total oxidant/antioxidant status at term. The levels of cord blood catalase (CAT), paraoxonase 1 (PON1), ceruloplasmin, total thiol and lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS) and the oxidative stress index (OSI) were measured in samples of fetal cord blood serum from 29 nonsmokers who were not exposed to active or passive smoke, 30 passive smokers and 21 active smokers. The gestation period of all pregnancies was between 37 and 40 weeks, the pregnancies were uncomplicated and the infants were delivered vaginally. The weights of infants borne to the active smokers were significantly (P < 0.01) lower than those borne to the controls. Significantly lower concentrations of CAT, PON1 and TAC were found in the cord blood of the smokers than in that of the nonsmokers (P < 0.018). The cord blood levels of LOOH and TOS and OSI were significantly higher in the active and passive smokers than in the controls (P < 0.01). A significant positive correlation was found between maternal tobacco exposure and cord blood OSI (P < 0.001). Active or passive maternal smoking is associated with important alterations in the balance of oxidants and antioxidants in fetal cord blood and causes potent oxidative stress.

Increased oxidative stress in infants exposed to passive smoking

The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of passive cigarette smoking on the oxidative and anti-oxidative status of plasma in infants. Eighty-four infants aged 6-28 weeks were divided into two groups: the study group included infants who had been exposed to passive smoking via at least five cigarettes per day for at least the past 6 weeks at home, while the control group included infants who had never been exposed to passive smoking. The antioxidative status of plasma was assessed by the measurement of individual antioxidant components: vitamin C, albumin, bilirubin, uric acid, thiol contents and total antioxidant capacity (TAC 1 and TAC 2). Oxidative status was assessed by the determination of total peroxide levels and the oxidative stress index (OSI 1 and OSI 2). Plasma vitamin C, thiol concentration and TAC 1 and TAC 2 levels were significantly lower, whereas plasma total peroxide levels and OSI 1 and OSI 2 were significantly higher, in passive smoking infants than in the controls (P<0.01). We conclude that passive smoking has a negative impact on numerous parts of the antioxidant defence system in infants, and exposes them to potent oxidative stress.
