Abstract
The title compound, [PtCl2(C26H22P2)]·2CHCl3 (I), is the third monoclinic polymorph of this platinum(II) complex involving the bidentate ligand cis-1,2-bis-(di-phenyl-phosphan-yl)ethyl-ene (cis-dppe) [for the others, see: Oberhauser et al. (1998a ▸). Inorg. Chim. Acta, 274, 143-154, and Oberhauser et al. (1995 ▸). Inorg. Chim. Acta, 238, 35-43]. The structure of compound (I) was solved in the space group P21/c, with one complex mol-ecule in the asymmetric unit along with two solvate chloro-form mol-ecules. The PtII atom is ligated by two P and two Cl atoms in the equatorial plane and has a perfect square-planar coordination sphere. In the crystal, the complex mol-ecule is linked to the chloro-form solvate mol-ecules by C-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds and face-on C-Cl⋯π inter-actions. There are also weak offset π-π inter-actions present [inter-centroid distances are 3.770 (6) and 4.096 (6) Å], linking the mol-ecules to form supra-molecular sheets that lie in the bc plane.

Reactions of the cycloplatinated(ii) complexes [PtR(ppy)(SMe2)], 1, where ppy = deprotonated 2-phenylpyridine and R = Me or p-MeC6H4, with pyridine-2-thione, C5H5SN, were studied by UV-vis and 1H NMR spectroscopies and on the basis of the data a mechanism is proposed.

Abstract
Synthesis of an analogue of the C-cluster of C. hydrogenoformans carbon monoxide dehydrogenase requires formation of a planar Ni(II) site and attachment of an exo iron atom in the core unit NiFe(4)S(5). The first objective has been achieved by two reactions: (i) displacement of Ph(3)P or Bu(t)()NC at tetrahedral Ni(II) sites of cubane-type [NiFe(3)S(4)](+) clusters with chelating diphosphines, and (ii) metal atom incorporation into a cuboidal [Fe(3)S(4)](0) cluster with a M(0) reactant in the presence of bis(1,2-dimethylphosphino)ethane (dmpe). The isolated product clusters [(dmpe)MFe(3)S(4)(LS(3))](2-) (M = Ni(II) (9), Pd(II) (12), Pt(II) (13); LS(3) = 1,3,5-tris((4,6-dimethyl-3-mercaptophenyl)thio)-2,4,6-tris(p-tolylthio)benzene(3-)) contain the cores [MFe(3)(mu(2)-S)(mu(3)-S)(3)](+) having planar M(II)P(2)S(2) sites and variable nonbonding M...S distances of 2.6-3.4 A. Reaction (i) involves a tetrahedral --> planar Ni(II) structural change between isomeric cubane and cubanoid [NiFe(3)S(4)](+) cores. Based on the magnetic properties of 12 and earlier considerations, the S = (5)/(2) ground state of the cubanoid cluster arises from the [Fe(3)S(4)](-) fragment, whereas the S = (3)/(2) ground state of the cubane cluster is a consequence of antiferromagnetic coupling between the spins of Ni(2+) (S = 1) and [Fe(3)S(4)](-). Other substitution reactions of [NiFe(3)S(4)](+) clusters and 1:3 site-differentiated [Fe(4)S(4)](2+) clusters are described, as are the structures of 12, 13, [(Me(3)P)NiFe(3)S(4)(LS(3))](2-), and [Fe(4)S(4)(LS(3))L'](2-) (L' = Me(2)NC(2)H(4)S(-), Ph(2)P(O)C(2)H(4)S(-)). This work significantly expands our initial report of cluster 9 (Panda et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2004, 126, 6448-6459) and further demonstrates that a planar M(II) site can be stabilized within a cubanoid [NiFe(3)S(4)](+) core.

Abstract
Reactions of [MCl2(L-L)], M = Pt, Pd; L-L = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) or bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe), with NaC5H4SN in a 1 : 2 molar ratio lead to mononuclear species [M(S-C5H4SN)2(P-P)], M = Pt; L-L = dppm (1) or dppe (2) and M = Pd; L-L = dppe (3), as well as to the dinuclear [Pd2(micro2-S,N-C5H4SN)(micro2-kappa2S-C5H4SN)(micro2-dppm)(S-C5H4SN)2] (4). In contrast, reaction of [MCl2(dppm)] with NaC5H4SN in a 1 : 1 molar ratio leads to [Pd2(micro2-S,N-C5H4SN)3(micro2-dppm)]Cl (5) and trans-[Pt(S-C5H4SN)2(PPh2Me)2] (6) respectively. The latter is formed in low yield by cleavage of the dppm ligand. The dinuclear derivatives 4 and 5 present an A-frame and lantern structure, respectively. The former showing three different co-ordination modes in the same molecule with a short Pd-Pd distance of 2.9583 (9) A and the latter with three bridging S,N thionate ligands showing a shorter Pd-Pd distance of 2.7291 (13) A. Both distances could be imposed by the bridging ligands or point to some sort of metal-metal interaction.
