Syntheses and crystal structures of [BpBut,Me]ZnX, [BpBut,Pri]ZnX (X=Me, I) and {[BpBut,Me]Cd(μ-I)}2: mononuclear versus dinuclear bis(pyrazolyl)hydroborato zinc and cadmium complexes

Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of a Terminal Cadmium Hydride Compound, [κ3-TismPriBenz]CdH

The terminal cadmium hydride compound, [κ³-Tism^PriBenz]CdH, which features the tris[(1-isopropylbenzimidazol-2-yl)dimethylsilyl]methyl ligand, may be obtained via the reactions of either [κ³-Tism^PriBenz]CdN(SiMe₃)₂ or [Tism^PriBenz]CdOSiPh₃ with PhSiH₃. The Cd-H bond of [κ³-Tism^PriBenz]CdH undergoes (a) metathesis reactions with MeI, Me₃SiX (X = Cl, Br, I, NCO), and Me₃SnX (X = Cl, Br, I) to afford the corresponding [Tism^PriBenz]CdX derivative, (b) insertion with CO₂ and CS₂ to afford respectively [Tism^PriBenz]Cd(κ¹-O₂CH) and [Tism^PriBenz]Cd(κ¹-S₂CH), and (c) hydride abstraction with B(C₆F₅)₃ to afford {[Tism^PriBenz]Cd}[HB(C₆F₅)₃] that possesses a rare trigonal monopyramidal geometry for cadmium.

Relative hemilabilities of H2B(az)2 (az = pyrazolyl, dimethylpyrazolyl, methimazolyl) chelates in the complexes [M(η-C3H5)(CO)2{H2B(az)2}] (M = Mo, W)

The question of B–H–Mo hemilability in a range of dihydrobis(azolyl)borate scorpionate ligands is discussed with reference to η³-allyl complexes [Mo(η³-C₃H₅)(CO)₂{H₂B(az)₂}] [az = pyrazolyl (pz), dimethylpyrazolyl (pz*), mercaptoimidazolyl (mt)].

Investigation of N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Supported Group 12 Triflates as Pre-catalysts for Hydrosilylation/Borylation

N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes of Cd and Hg triflates (OTf) were prepared and their attempted conversion into rare cadmium and mercury hydrides was explored. In contrast to zinc, which forms stable [ZnH]⁺ complexes with NHCs, the heavier Cd and Hg congeners could not be formed; the increased instability of Cd-H and Hg-H units was rationalized with the aid of computations. It was also discovered that the dimeric adduct [IPr⋅Cd(μ-OTf)₂ ]₂ (IPr=[(HCNDipp)₂ C:]; Dipp=2,6-iPr₂ C₆ H₃ ) is an active precatalyst for the hydrosilylation and hydroborylation of hindered aldehydes and ketones. The related zinc congener was inactive as a catalyst highlighting a distinct advantage of using heavy Group 12 metals to promote catalytic hydrosilylation/borylation.

Applications of Tripodal [S(3)] and [Se(3)] L(2)X Donor Ligands to Zinc, Cadmium and Mercury Chemistry: Organometallic and Bioinorganic Perspectives

The tripodal tris(2-mercapto-1-R-imidazolyl)hydroborato ligand system, [Tm(R)], and its selenium counterpart, [Tse(R)], provide useful platforms for investigating organometallic and bioinorganic aspects of the chemistry of zinc, cadmium and mercury in sulfur-rich and selenium-rich coordination environments. For example, the tridentate [Tm(R)] ligand provides an [S(3)] donor array that is of use for mimicking aspects of zinc enzymes and proteins that have sulfur-rich active sites, such as the Ada DNA repair protein. With respect to mercury, an interesting application of the [Tm(Bu(t) )] ligand is the synthesis of the mercury alkyl compounds [Tm(Bu(t) )]HgR (R = Me, Et) that react with PhSH to yield [Tm(Bu(t) )]HgSPh and RH, a reaction that emulates mercury detoxification by the organomercurial lyase, MerB. In addition to the tridentate [Tm(R)] and [Tse(R)] ligands, applications of the bidentate counterparts, [Bm(R)] and [Bse(R)] are also described.

Structural and Spectroscopic Study of Reactions between Chelating Zinc-Binding Groups and Mimics of the Matrix Metalloproteinase and Disintegrin Metalloprotease Catalytic Sites: The Coordination Chemistry of Metalloprotease Inhibition

To understand the coordination chemistry of zinc-binding groups (ZBGs) with catalytic zinc centers in matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and disintegrin metalloproteases (ADAMs), we have undertaken a model compound study centered around tris(3,5-methylphenypyrazolyl)hydroboratozinc(II) hydroxide and aqua complexes ([Tp(Ph,Me)ZnOH] and [Tp(Ph,Me)Zn(OH2)]+, respectively, wherein (Tp(Ph,Me))- = hydrotris(3,5-methylphenylpyrazolyl)borate) and the products of their reactions with a class of chelating Schiff's base ligands. The results show that the protic ligands, HL (HL = N-propyl-1-(5-methyl-2-imidazolyl)methanimine (5-Me-4-ImHPr), N-propyl-1-(4-imidazolyl)methanimine (4-ImHPr), and N-propyl-1-(2-imidazolyl)methanimine (2-ImHPr)), react with [Tp(Ph,Me)ZnOH] and give products with the general formula [Tp(Ph,Me)ZnL], whereas reactions with neutral aprotic ligands, L' (L' = N-propyl-1-(1-methyl-2-imidazolyl)methanimine (1-Me-2-ImPr) and N-propyl-1-(2-thiazolyl)methanimine (2-TaPr)), yield the corresponding [Tp(Ph,Me)ZnL]+ complexes. Although the phenol group of N-propyl-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)methanimine (2-HOPhPr) is protic, this ligand forms a cationic four-coordinate complex containing an intraligand hydrogen bond. The solid-state structures of these complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and the results showed that the protic ligands form five-membered chelates of the Zn2+ ion. All ligands displace the aqua ligand in [Tp(Ph,Me)Zn(OH2)]+ to yield complexes having 1H NMR spectra consistent with the formation of five membered chelates. The 1H resonance frequencies of the chelating ligands typically shift upfield upon coordination to the zinc center, due to ring current effects from the pendant phenyl groups of the (Tp(Ph,Me))- ligand. Thus, the 1H NMR spectra provide a convenient and sensitive means of tracking the solution reactions by titration. The resulting series of spectra showed that the stabilities of the chelates in solution depend on the propensity of the ligands to deprotonate upon chelation of the zinc center. The behaviors of these bidentate ZBGs provide insight into the structural and electronic factors that contribute to the stabilities of inhibited MMPs and ADAMs and suggest that the proton acidity of the coordinated ZBG may be a crucial criterion for inhibitor design.
