Abstract
[Cu(dmp)2(CH3CN)]2+ can be reduced in acetonitrile containing water due to steric constraints of the ligands. Hydroxyl radicals are produced from water oxidation. We take advantage of this reaction to evaluate the anticancer activity of the complex.

Abstract
In this study, 9-anthraldehyde-N(4)-methylthiosemicarbazone (MeATSC) 1 and [Co(phen)2(O2CO)]Cl·6H2O 2 (where phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) were synthesized. [Co(phen)2(O2CO)]Cl·6H2O 2 was used to produce anhydrous [Co(phen)2(H2O)2](NO3)33. Subsequently, anhydrous [Co(phen)2(H2O)2](NO3)33 was reacted with MeATSC 1 to produce [Co(phen)2(MeATSC)](NO3)3·1.5H2O·C2H5OH 4. The ligand, MeATSC 1 and all complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, FT IR, UV-visible, and multinuclear NMR (1H, 13C, and 59Co) spectroscopy, along with HRMS, and conductivity measurements, where appropriate. Interactions of MeATSC 1 and complex 4 with calf thymus DNA (ctDNA) were investigated by carrying out UV-visible spectrophotometric studies. UV-visible spectrophotometric studies revealed weak interactions between ctDNA and the analytes, MeATSC 1 and complex 4 (Kb = 8.1 × 105 and 1.6 × 104 M-1, respectively). Topoisomerase inhibition assays and cleavage studies proved that complex 4 was an efficient catalytic inhibitor of human topoisomerases I and IIα. Based upon the results obtained from the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium (MTS) assay on 4T1-luc metastatic mammary breast cancer cells (IC50 = 34.4 ± 5.2 μM when compared to IC50 = 13.75 ± 1.08 μM for the control, cisplatin), further investigations into the molecular events initiated by exposure to complex 4 were investigated. Studies have shown that complex 4 activated both the apoptotic and autophagic signaling pathways in addition to causing dissipation of the mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm). Furthermore, activation of cysteine-aspartic proteases3 (caspase 3) in a time- and concentration-dependent manner coupled with the ΔΨm, studies implicated the intrinsic apoptotic pathway as the major regulator of cell death mechanism.

Abstract
We report on the syntheses, crystal structures, and magnetic susceptibilities of a family of copper pyrazine (pz)-based antiferromagnets with moderate in-plane magnetic exchange. These materials fall into two classes: monoclinic complexes [Cu(pz)2]A2 for A = ClO4 (1) or BF4 (2) and the tetragonal complex [Cu(pz)2(NO3)]PF6 (3). Compound 1 and its deuterated version [Cu(pz-d4)2](ClO4)2 (1a) crystallize in the space group C2/m at room temperature with disordered perchlorate anions. For both 1 and 2, the C centering of the Cu(II), S = 1/2, site yields four equivalent nearest neighbors, producing layers of Cu(II) ions bridged by the pz molecules, which map onto a square magnetic lattice. The layers are offset such that Cu(II) ions lie above and below the holes of adjacent layers. Compound 3 crystallizes in the space group I4/mcm with a layer structure similar to those of 1 and 2 but with Cu(II) ions of adjacent layers stacked above each other and bridged by semicoordinate NO3- ions. The variable-temperature susceptibilities in these compounds approximate a two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet with J values within the layers of 17.5(3) K (1), 15.3(3) K (2), and 10.8(3) K (3). Ordering transitions are observed in the magnetic data at 4.2(3) and 4.3(5) K for 1 and 2, respectively.

Abstract
Crystals of copper halide and pseudohalide compounds with pyrazine are synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. The title compound, [Cu3Cl2CNPz] (1) (Pz = pyrazine), is a new copper compound exhibiting an unusual -(Cu3Cl2)- polymeric stair structural motif and three-coordinate cyanide. Compound 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/m, with a = 3.6530(7) A, b = 17.160(3) A, c = 6.9800(14) A, beta = 90.58(3) degrees, and Z = 2. In addition, the series of complexes [Cu2X2Pz] for X = Cl (2), Br (3), and I (4) are also crystallized under hydrothermal conditions. The inorganic polymer [Cu2Br2Pz] (3) belongs to the triclinic space group P1, with a = 6.9671(14) A, b = 7.849(2) A, c = 8.099(2) A, alpha = 71.69(3) degrees, beta = 70.71(3) degrees, gamma = 85.43(3) degrees, and Z = 2. The structure of 3, is similar to the recently reported structure for [Cu2Cl2Pz] (2) (Kawata, S.; Kitagawa, S.; Kumagai, H.; Iwabuchi, S.; Katada, M. Inorg. Chim. Acta 1998, 267, 143). The third member of the series, [Cu2I2Pz], is found to be isostructural on the basis of X-ray powder diffraction results. The lattice parameters are refined from indexed reflections to a = 7.115(10) A, b = 8.321(19) A, c = 8.378(17) A, alpha = 71.1(3) degrees, beta = 67.3(1) degrees, and gamma = 83.0(2) degrees. Electronic spectra show that compounds 1-4 have optical band gaps in the range 2.2-2.4 eV. The infrared and Raman spectra as well as the thermal properties of all compounds are presented.

Abstract
The crystal structure of bright-red crystals of the bidimensional polynuclear diamagnetic (µ-chloro)(µ-pyrazine)copper(I) complex has been analyzed from X-ray diffraction data. The structure was solved by the heavy-atom method. Full-matrix least-squares refinement based on 673 reflections with F > 4σ(F) converged to a final R = 0.043 and Rw = 0.048. Crystals of this complex are monoclinic, space group P2/c, a = 3.814(1), b = 6.356(1) and c = 11.497(5) Å; β = 96.04(2)°, Z = 2. The structure consists of planes of copper(I) atoms linked by pyrazine and Cl− bridges, each Cu(I) being in a distorted tetrahedral environment formed by two chloride ions and two nitrogen atoms belonging to two pyrazine molecules, with bond distances of Cu—Cl = 2.349(1) and Cu—N = 2.038(4) Å. Vibrational and electronic spectroscopy of the title compound is also reported. Keywords: two-dimensional copper(I)–pyrazine complexes.
