Mixed halide/phosphine complexes of the dirhenium core. Part 7. Reactions of [Re2I8]2− with monodentate phosphines

Dinuclear and Mononuclear Rhenium Coordination Compounds upon Employment of a Schiff-Base Triol Ligand: Structural, Magnetic, and Computational Studies

The 1:1 reaction of trans-[Re^IIICl₃(PPh₃)₂(MeCN)] with 2-(β-naphthalideneamino)-2-hydroxymethyl-1-propanol, H₃L, in toluene gave the dinuclear complex [Re^III₂Cl₄(HL)(PPh₃)]·2C₇H₈ (1·2C₇H₈), while the 1:2 reaction led to the formation of complex [Re^IVCl₂(HL)(PPh₃)] (2). In both species, the Schiff-base ligand exists in its doubly deprotonated form, HL^2-, forming chelate rings around the metallic centers. In addition, 1·2C₇H₈ displays a unique triple metal-to-metal bond between the two trivalent rhenium ions separated at a 2.229(1) Å bond distance, while in complex [Re^IVCl₂(HL)(PPh₃)] (2) the two aromatic ligands, HL^2- and PPh₃, occupy axial positions, with the terminal Cl^- ions in the trans position. Investigation of the magnetic properties revealed a Curie paramagnetic behavior ( S = 1/2) with a pronounced temperature independent paramagnetism (TIP) for 1·2C₇H₈ and 2. Both the geometry and the electronic structure of both compounds have been studied by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, confirming the triplet and doublet spin ground state of the complexes and furthermore establishing an electron-rich σ²π⁴δ¹δ^*1 bond order of 3 for 1·2C₇H₈. In addition, the absorption spectrum of 1·2C₇H₈ in CH₂Cl₂ was simulated by means of DFT calculations and is in excellent agreement with both the crystallographic and theoretical studies. Complex 1·2C₇H₈ is the first dinuclear rhenium complex with a triple metal-metal bond between trivalent rhenium centers.

Molecular and Electronic Structure of Re2Br4(PMe3)4

The dinuclear rhenium(II) complex Re2Br4(PMe3)4 was prepared from the reduction of [Re2Br8](2-) with (n-Bu4N)BH4 in the presence of PMe3 in propanol. The complex was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and UV-visible spectroscopy. It crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/c space group and is isostructural with its molybdenum and technetium analogues. The Re-Re distance (2.2521(3) Å) is slightly longer than the one in Re2Cl4(PMe3)4 (2.247(1) Å). The molecular and electronic structure of Re2X4(PMe3)4 (X = Cl, Br) were studied by multiconfigurational quantum chemical methods. The computed ground-state geometry is in excellent agreement with the experimental structure determined by SCXRD. The calculated total bond order (2.75) is consistent with the presence of an electron-rich triple bond and is similar to the one found for Re2Cl4(PMe3)4. The electronic absorption spectrum of Re2Br4(PMe3)4 was recorded in benzene and shows a series of low-intensity bands in the range 10 000-26 000 cm(-1). The absorption bands were assigned based on calculations of the excitation energies with the multireference wave functions followed by second-order perturbation theory using the CASSCF/CASPT2 method. Calculations predict that the lowest energy band corresponds to the δ* → σ* transition, while the next higher energy bands were attributed to the δ* → π*, δ → σ*, and δ → π* transitions.

Structural, spectroscopic, and multiconfigurational quantum chemical investigations of the electron-rich metal-metal triple-bonded Tc(2)X(4)(PMe(3))(4) (X = Cl, Br) complexes

The compounds Tc(2)Cl(4)(PMe(3))(4) and Tc(2)Br(4)(PMe(3))(4) were formed from the reaction between (n-Bu(4)N)(2)Tc(2)X(8) (X = Cl, Br) and trimethylphosphine. The Tc(II) dinuclear species were characterized by single-crystal XRD, UV-visible spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry techniques, and the results are compared to those obtained from density functional theory and multiconfigurational (CASSCF/CASPT2) quantum chemical studies. The compound Tc(2)Cl(4)(PMe(3))(4) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c [a = 17.9995(9) A, b = 9.1821(5) A, c = 17.0090(9) A, beta = 115.4530(10) degrees ] and is isostructural to M(2)Cl(4)(PMe(3))(4) (M = Re, Mo, W) and to Tc(2)Br(4)(PMe(3))(4). The metal-metal distance (2.1318(2) A) is similar to the one found in Tc(2)Br(4)(PMe(3))(4) (2.1316(5) A). The calculated molecular structures of the ground states are in excellent agreement with the structures determined experimentally. Calculations of effective bond orders for Tc(2)X(8)(2-) and Tc(2)X(4)(PMe(3))(4) (X = Cl, Br) indicate stronger pi bonds in the Tc(2)(4+) core than in Tc(2)(6+) core. The electronic spectra were recorded in benzene and show a series of low intensity bands in the range 10 000-26 000 cm(-1). Assignment of the bands as well as computing their excitation energies and intensities were performed at both TD-DFT and CASSCF/CASPT2 levels of theory. Calculations predict that the lowest energy band corresponds to the delta* --> sigma* transition, the difference between calculated and experimental values being 228 cm(-1) for X = Cl and 866 cm(-1) for X = Br. The next bands are attributed to delta* --> pi*, delta --> sigma*, and delta --> pi* transitions. The cyclic voltammograms exhibit two reversible waves and indicate that Tc(2)Br(4)(PMe(3))(4) exhibits more positive oxidation potentials than Tc(2)Cl(4)(PMe(3))(4.) This phenomenon is discussed and ascribed to stronger metal (d) to halide (d) back bonding in the bromo complex. Further analysis indicates that Tc(II) dinuclear species containing pi-acidic phosphines are more difficult to oxidize, and a correlation between oxidation potential and phosphine acidity was established.

Unsymmetrical dirhenium complexes that contain [Re(2)](6+) and [Re(2)](5+) cores complexed by tridentate ligands with P(2)O and P(2)N donor sets

The quadruply bonded dirhenium(III) complex (n-Bu(4)N)(2)Re(2)Cl(8) reacts with tridentate ligands that contain essentially planar P,O,P donor sets to afford the complexes Re(2)Cl(6)(eta(3)-L(1)) (3) (L(1) = bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether) and (n-Bu(4)N)[Re(2)Cl(7)(eta(1)-L(2))] (4) (L(2) = 4,6-bis(diphenylphosphino)dibenzofuran). Spectroscopic and electrochemical data support the unsymmetrical structure Cl(4)ReReCl(2)(eta(3)-L(1)) in the case of 3, while 4 contains monodentate P-bound L(2) both complexes contain Re---Re bonds. The synthon cis-Re(2)(mu-O(2)CCH(3))(2)Cl(4)(H(2)O)(2) reacts with ligands L(1), L(2), 2,6-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyridine (L(3)), bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)ethyl]amine (L(4)), and N,N-bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)ethyl]trimethylacetamide (L(5)) to give the paramagnetic complexes Re(2)(mu-O(2)CCH(3))Cl(4)(eta(3)-L(n)) (5-9) with Re bonds. The lability of the mu-acetato ligands in 5-9 has been demonstrated by the reactions of compounds 5 (n = 1) and 7 (n = 3) with 4-Ph(2)PC(6)H(4)CO(2)H, 2-Ph(2)PC(6)H(4)CO(2)H, and quinoline-4-carboxylic acid to give complexes 10-12 (from 5) and 13-15 (from 7), respectively. These products contain uncoordinated donor atoms that can be used to produce mixed-metal assemblies. Compounds 5 and 7 also react with terephthalic acid (1,4-C(6)H(4)(CO(2)H) to give [Re(2)Cl(4)(eta(3)-L(1))](2)(mu-O(2)CC(6)H(4)CO(2)) (16) and [Re(2)Cl(4)(eta(3)-L(3))](2)(mu-O(2)CC(6)H(4)CO(2)) (17) in which electronic coupling between the paramagnetic sets of dirhenium units is very weak. Single-crystal X-ray structure determinations have been carried out on complexes 5-8, 11, 12, and 14-16.
