New octachlorodirhenate(III) salts: solid state manifestation for a certain conformational flexibility of the [Re2Cl8]2− ion

Coordinating Ability of Anions, Solvents, Amino Acids, and Gases towards Alkaline and Alkaline-Earth Elements, Transition Metals, and Lanthanides

After briefly reviewing the applications of the coordination ability indices proposed earlier for anions and solvents toward transition metals and lanthanides, a new analysis of crystal structures is applied now to a much larger number of coordinating species: anions (including those that are present in ionic solvents), solvents, amino acids, gases, and a sample of neutral ligands. The coordinating ability towards s-block elements is now also considered. The effect of several factors on the coordinating ability will be discussed: (a) the charge of an anion, (b) the chelating nature of anions and solvents, (c) the degree of protonation of oxo-anions, carboxylates and amino carboxylates, and (d) the substitution of hydrogen atoms by methyl groups in NH₃ , ethylenediamine, benzene, ethylene, pyridine and aldehydes. Hit parades of solvents and anions most commonly used in the areas of transition metal, s-block and lanthanide chemistry are deduced from the statistics of their presence in crystal structures.

Probing the Structural and Electronic Properties of Dirhenium Halide Clusters: A Density Functional Theory Study

Dirhenium halide dianions received considerable attention in past decades due to the unusual metal-metal quadruple bond. The systematic structural evolution of dirhenium halide clusters has not been sufficiently studied and hence is not well-understood. In this work, we report an in-depth investigation on the structures and electronic properties of doubly charged dirhenium halide clusters Re₂X₈^2- (X = F, Cl, Br, I). Our computational efforts rely on the well-tested unbiased CALYPSO (Crystal structure AnaLYsis by Particle Swarm Optimization) method combined with density functional theory calculations. We find that all ground-state Re₂X₈^2- clusters have cube-like structures of D_4h symmetry with two Re atoms encapsulated in halogen framework. The reasonable agreement between the simulated and experimental photoelectron spectrum of the Re₂Cl₈^2- cluster supports strongly the reliability of our computational strategy. The chemical bonding analysis reveals that the δ bond is the pivotal factor for the ground-state Re₂X₈^2- (X = F, Cl, Br, I) clusters to maintain D_4h symmetric cube-like structures, and the enhanced stability of Re₂Cl₈^2- is mainly attributed to the chemical bonding of 5d orbital of Re atoms and 3p orbital of Cl atoms.

Different β-alanine dimeric forms in trifluoromethanesulfonic acid salts. XRD and vibrational studies

Two new crystalline salts: β-alaninium trifluoromethanesulfonate (β-AlaOTf) and bis(β-alanine) trifluoromethanesulfonate (β-2AlaOTf) were obtained. The former one contains diprotonated β-alanine dimer, the latter one monoprotonated β-alanine dimer. Both compounds were studied by single crystal XRD, vibrational (IR and Raman) spectroscopy and calorimetric method. The quantum-mechanical calculations (DFT/B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p)) for the diprotonated dimer were carried out. The β-AlaOTf salt crystallizes in the P1¯ space group of triclinic system (Z=2), the β-2AlaOTf in the P2₁/m space group of monoclinic system (Z=2). The vibrational data for the studied compounds are discussed in relation to their crystal structure, and provide insight into the character of hydrogen bonds and β-alanine protonation. The studied crystals do not exhibit phase transitions in the solid state.

Synthesis, characterization, in vivo antitumor properties of the cluster rhenium compound with GABA ligands and its synergism with cisplatin

A new dirhenium(III) complex cis-[Re2(GABA)2Cl5(H2O)]Cl.2H2O with zwitterionic gamma-aminobutyrate ligands was prepared and characterized by spectral methods and crystallography. The structure of the compound is comprised of dinuclear complex cations (Re-Re 2.2437(3) A) involving cis-oriented double carboxylate bridges, four equatorial chloride ions and two weakly bonded aqua and chloride ligands in the axial positions at two rhenium centers (Re-O 2.363(3), Re-Cl 2.6735(12) A). Antitumor properties of the complex were studied in the model of tumor growth with the use of Wistar rats inoculated by tumor carcinoma Guerink cells. The introduction of the compound in dosage according to the scheme of antioxidant therapy, inhibited the tumor growth by ca. 60% and led to stabilization of red blood cells in the tumor-bearing organisms. The combined introduction of the compound and cisplatin had a significant impact on the tumor growth and the disappearance of the tumors in most of the animals.
