Synthesis and crystal structure of dinuclear and tetranuclear palladium dppm complexes. [Pd2(μ-dppm)2(vpy)Cl] and [Pd4(μ-dppm)4 (μ-X)2](ClO4)2 (X = Cl, Br and I)

Hairpin-shaped tetranuclear palladium(II) complex: synthesis, crystal structure, DNA binding and cytotoxicity activity studies

A novel tetranuclear palladium(II) complex [Pd(4)(phen)(4) (micro-pydc)(4)].10H(2)O (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, pydc = pyridine-3,4-dicarboxylate) has been synthesized and characterized. In the tetranuclear complex, two pairs of dipalladated [Pd(phen)] moieties are bridged together by four pydc, presenting a hairpin molecular shape. The binding of the title complex with fish sperm DNA (FS-DNA) has been investigated by UV spectrum and fluorescence spectrum. All the results indicate that the complex bind to DNA in an intercalative mode and considerating the molecular shape and size, the dipalladated phenanthroline moieties bisintercalate to the base pairs of DNA. Agarose gel electrophoresis assay demonstrates the ability of the complex to cleave the pBR322 plasmid DNA. Cytotoxic activity studies show the complex exhibited good cytotoxic activity against four different cancer cell lines.

Thermal and Electrochemically Assisted Pd−Cl Bond Cleavage in the d9−d9 Pd2(dppm)2Cl2 Complex by Pd3(dppm)3(CO)n+ Clusters (n = 2, 1, 0)

A new aspect of reactivity of the cluster [Pd3(dppm)3(micro3-CO)]n+, ([Pd3]n+, n = 2, 1, 0) with the low-valent metal-metal-bonded Pd2(dppm)2Cl2 dimer (Pd2Cl2) was observed using electrochemical techniques. The direct reaction between [Pd3]2+ and Pd2Cl2 in THF at room temperature leads to the known [Pd3(dppm)3(micro3-CO)(Cl)]+ ([Pd3(Cl)]+) adduct and the monocationic species Pd2(dppm)2Cl+ (very likely as Pd2(dppm)2(Cl)(THF)+, [Pd2Cl]+) as unambiguously demonstrated by UV-vis and 31P NMR spectroscopy. In this case, [Pd3]2+ acts as a strong Lewis acid toward the labile Cl- ion, which weakly dissociates from Pd2Cl2 (i.e., dissociative mechanism). Host-guest interactions between [Pd3]2+ and Pd2Cl2 seem unlikely on the basis of computer modeling because of the strong screening of the Pd-Cl fragment by the Ph-dppm groups in Pd2Cl2. The electrogenerated clusters [Pd3]+ and [Pd3]0 also react with Pd2Cl2 to unexpectedly form the same oxidized adduct, [Pd3(Cl)]+, despite the known very low affinity of [Pd3]+ and [Pd3]0 toward Cl- ions. The reduced biproduct in this case is the highly reactive zerovalent species "Pd2(dppm)2" or "Pd(dppm)" as demonstrated by quenching with CDCl3 (forming the well-known complex Pd(dppm)Cl2) or in presence of dppm (forming the known Pd2(dppm)3 d10-d10 dimer). To bring these halide-electron exchange reactions to completion for [Pd3]+ and [Pd3]0, 0.5 and 1.0 equiv of Pd2Cl2 are necessary, respectively, accounting perfectly for the number of exchanged electrons. The presence of a partial dissociation of Pd2Cl2 into the Cl- ion and the monocation [Pd2Cl]+, which is easier to reduce than Pd2Cl2, is suggested to explain the overall electrochemical results. It is possible to regulate the nature of the species formed from Pd2Cl2 by changing the state of charge of the title cluster.

The Pd4(dppm)4(H)22+ Cluster: A Precatalyst for the Homogeneous Hydrogenation of Alkynes

The catalytic properties of the title cluster toward the homogeneous hydrogenation of phenylacetylene, diphenylethyne and phenyl-1-propyne have been investigated as a function of temperature, pressure, solvents, substrate and cluster concentrations, and counterions. The title cluster is a precatalyst that exhibits a good catalytic activity under mild conditions (1 atm of H(2) at 20 degrees C) for the hydrogenation of alkynes and alkenes. For the alkyne substrates, the turnover frequencies (tof's) range between 200 and 500 h(-)(1), and the product distribution varies as: cis-products, 75-90%; trans-products; 0-8% after 3 h of reaction. Based on the graphs -d[substrate]/dt vs [Pd(4)](1/2), the mechanism indicates a cluster dissociation into two dimers (presumably of the type Pd(2)(dppm)(2)(H)(solvent)(+)). The variations of tof (or -d[substrate]/dt) as a function of [substrate] and pressure of H(2) are linear. At 1600 psi of H(2), the tof can reach 2500-3000 h(-)(1) (in THF). The tof also increases with temperature reaching a maximum at approximately 35 degrees C (tof: 1000-1300 h(-)(1)), but at higher temperatures cluster decomposition begins to occur, leading to a rapid decrease in rates of catalysis. At 50 degrees C, no catalysis is observed. The hydrogenation reaction can be stopped at the corresponding cis-alkenes with approximately 95% yields, depending on the substrate and experimental conditions used. The tof's also vary with the solvent, where stronger coordinating solvent molecules give higher tof's. In addition, the tof's do not change with the nature of the counterion, which acts as "spectator" in the catalysis.
