The effect of fat feeding on fibrinolysis, "Stypven" time and platelet aggregation

Intravenous infusion of propofol for induction and maintenance of anaesthesia during endoscopic carbon dioxide laser ENT procedures with high frequency jet ventilation

Fourteen patients of ASA grades 1-3 were anaesthetised with continuous infusions of propofol and alfentanil for endoscopic carbon dioxide laser ENT microsurgery. Their lungs were ventilated with an oxygen-air mixture using a high frequency jet ventilator. Propofol was given at an initial rate of 120 micrograms/kg/minute for 10 minutes after a bolus dose of 2.6 mg/kg, and then at 80 micrograms/kg/minute. Alfentanil was given at a rate of 0.5 micrograms/kg/minute. Arterial pressure decreased significantly after the bolus dose. It increased significantly for a few minutes after laryngoscopy and returned to baseline values during maintenance of anaesthesia. Heart rate increased significantly during induction and until laryngoscopy was performed but it decreased below its initial value after 5 minutes of maintenance. Platelet count and the degree of aggregation did not change during infusion of propofol.

Platelet changes after a saturated fat meal and their prevention by Dazmegrel, a thromboxane synthetase inhibitor

A saturated fat meal was given to 10 normal males both before and after pretreatment with UK38,485, a thromboxane synthetase inhibitor (Dazmegrel, Pfizer Central Research, Sandwich, Kent, United Kingdom). Following the fat meal at 2 and 4 hr there was laboratory evidence of platelet activation. Dazmegrel lowered baseline platelet activity and lessened platelet activation following the fat meal. This drug should be investigated further as a potential antithrombotic agent.

The effect of hyperlipoproteinemia on thrombolysis: in vitro studies using purified lipoproteins from normolipemic donors

To determine whether or not lipoproteins affect thrombolysis in vitro using Chandler's loop method, VLDL, LDL, and HDL fractions from healthy male donors were obtained by ultracentrifugation. The lipoproteins were used to enrich whole blood or fibrin thrombi radiolabeled with 125-I-fibrinogen. Lipoprotein-enriched or unenriched thrombi were perfused in rotating Chandler loops with lipoprotein-enriched or unenriched plasma, respectively. Lysis was initiated by adding high molecular weight urokinase or single chain pro-urokinase to the perfusion medium. In some experiments, plasminogen was also added. Variation in the amounts of these activators and plasminogen permitted study of the effect of lipoproteins over a range of thrombolysis. No consistent statistically significant difference in the degree or time course of lysis of lipoprotein-enriched vs. unenriched thrombi or perfusion media was found. These studies, using normal lipoproteins, do not preclude the possibility that lipoproteins from patients with type IIa, IIb, or IV hyperlipoproteinemia may be genetically abnormal or may function pathologically, resulting in an effect on thrombolysis.

Effect of feeding fat on fibrinolysis, stypven time, and platelet aggregation in elderly Africans

The effects of acute fat feeding on fibrinolytic activity, platelet aggregation, and stypven time in six elderly Africans are presented. These indicate that there is no alteration in the pattern of response seen in Africans with advancing age.

Effect of feeding fat on fibrinolysis, Stypven time, and platelet aggregation in Africans, Asians, and Europeans

The effects of acute fat feeding on fibrinolytic activity, platelet aggregation, and Stypven time in 10 Africans and 10 Asians are presented and compared with the results previously obtained in 10 Europeans. These indicated that the inhibition of fibrinolytic activity seen in Europeans does not occur in either Africans or Asians although the Stypven time was shortened in all three groups. Platelet aggregation, as measured by the Chandler's tube technique, was inhibited by fat feeding in Europeans but was unchanged in Africans and Asians. The results also indicate that the fibrinolytic activity of Africans and Asians is greater than that of Europeans.
