Abstract
Impedance spectroscopy has been widely used for the study of the electrical properties of membranes for their characterization. The most common use of this technique is the measure of the conductivity of different electrolyte solutions to study the behavior and movement of electrically charged particles inside the pores of membranes. The objective of this investigation was to observe if there is a relation present between the retention that a nanofiltration membrane possesses to certain electrolytic solutions (NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, CaCl2, and Na2SO4) and the parameters that are obtained through IS measurements of the active layer of the membrane. To achieve our objective, different characterization techniques were performed to obtain the permeability, retention, and zeta potential values of a Desal-HL nanofiltration membrane. Impedance spectroscopy measurements were performed when a gradient concentration was present between both sides of the membrane to study the variation that the electrical parameters had with the time evolution.

Abstract
Highly selective ion separations are vital for producing pure salts, and membrane-based separations are promising alternatives to conventional ion-separation techniques. Our previous work demonstrated that simple pressure-driven flow through negatively charged isoporous membranes can separate Li+ and K+ with selectivities as high as 70 in dilute solutions. The separation mechanism relies on spontaneously arising streaming potentials that induce electromigration, which opposes advection and separates cations based on differences in their electrophoretic mobilities. Although the separation technique is simple, this work shows that high selectivities are possible only with careful consideration of experimental conditions including transmembrane pressure, solution ionic strength, the K+/Li+ ratio in the feed, and the extent of concentration polarization. Separations conducted with a rotating membrane show Li+/K+ selectivities as high as 150 with a 1000 rpm membrane rotation rate, but the selectivity decreases to 1.3 at 95 rpm. These results demonstrate the benefits and necessity of quantitative control of concentration polarization in highly selective separations. Increases in solution ionic strength or the K+/Li+ feed ratio can also decrease selectivities more than an order of magnitude.

Abstract
Thin-film composite (TFC) membranes are the most widely used membranes for low-cost and energy-efficient water desalination processes. Proper control over the three influential surface parameters, namely wettability, roughness, and surface charge, is vital in optimizing the TFC membrane surface and permeation properties. More specifically, the surface properties of TFC membranes are often tailored by incorporating novel special wettability materials to increase hydrophilicity and tune surface physicochemical heterogeneity. These essential parameters affect the membrane permeability and antifouling properties. The membrane surface characterization protocols employed to date are rather controversial, and there is no general agreement about the metrics used to evaluate the surface hydrophilicity and physicochemical heterogeneity. In this review, we surveyed and critically evaluated the process that emerged for understanding the membrane surface properties using the simple and economical contact angle analysis technique. Contact angle analysis allows the estimation of surface wettability, surface free energy, surface charge, oleophobicity, contact angle hysteresis, and free energy of interaction; all coordinatively influence the membrane permeation and fouling properties. This review will provide insights into simplifying the evaluation of membrane properties by contact angle analysis that will ultimately expedite the membrane development process by reducing the time and expenses required for the characterization to confirm the success and the impact of any modification.

Abstract
The transport of ions and water in nanopores is of interest for a number of natural and technological processes. Due to their practically identical long straight cylindrical pores, nanoporous track-etched membranes are suitable materials for investigation of its mechanisms. This communication reports on simultaneous measurements of osmotic pressure and salt diffusion with a 24 nm pore track-etched membrane. Due to the use of dilute electrolyte solutions (1-4 mM KCl and LiCl), this pore size was commensurate with the Debye screening length. Advanced interpretation of experimental results using a full version of the space-charge model has revealed that osmotic pressure and salt diffusion can be quantitatively correlated with electrostatic interactions of ions with charged nanopore walls. The surface-charge density is shown to increase with electrolyte concentration in agreement with the mechanism of deprotonation of weakly acidic surface groups. Moreover, a lack of significant surface-charge dependence on the kind of cation (K+ or Li+) demonstrates that binding of salt counterions does not play a major role in this system.

Abstract
Selective transport in nanochannels (protein-based ion channels) is already used in living systems for electrical signaling in nerves and muscles, and this natural behavior is being approached for the application of biomimetic nanochannels in biosensors. On the basis of this principle, single nanochannels and nanochannel arrays seem to bring new advantages for biosensor development and applications. The purpose of this review is to provide a general comprehensive and critical overview on the latest trends in the development of nanochannel-based biosensing systems. A detailed description and discussion of representative and recent works covering the main nanochannel fabrication techniques, nanoporous material characterizations, and especially their application in both electrochemical and optical sensing systems is given. The state-of-the-art of the developed technology may open the way to new advances in the integration of nanochannels with (bio)molecules and synthetic receptors for the development of novel biodetection systems that can be extended to many other applications with interest for clinical analysis, safety, and security as well as environmental and other industrial studies and applications.

Abstract
The characteristics of transport across confluent cell monolayers may often be attributed to its electrostatic properties. While tangential streaming potential is often used to quantify these electrostatic properties, this method is not effective for transport normal to the apical cell surface where the charge properties along the basolateral sides may be important (i.e., confluent cells with leaky tight junctions). In addition, even when cells have a uniform charge distribution, the shear stress generated by the conventional tangential flow device may dislodge cells from their confluent state. Here we introduce a novel streaming potential measurement device to characterize the normal electrostatic properties of confluent cells. The streaming potential device encompasses a 24 mm cell-seeded Transwell(®) with two AgCl electrodes on either side of the cell-seeded Transwell. Phosphate buffered saline is pressurized transversal to the Transwell and the resultant pressure gradient induces a potential difference. Confluent monolayers of HEK and EA926 cells are used as examples. The corresponding zeta potential of the cell-membrane configuration is calculated using the Helmholtz-Smoluchowski equation and the zeta potential of the confluent cell layer is deconvolved from the overall measurements. For these test models, the zeta potential is consistent with that determined using a commercial dispersed-cell device. This novel streaming potential device provides a simple, easy, and cost-effective methodology to determine the normal zeta potential of confluent cells cultured on Transwell systems while keeping the cells intact. Furthermore, its versatility allows periodic measurements of properties of the same cell culture during transient studies.

Abstract
Track-etched polymer membranes are used to realize low-voltage electroosmotic (EO) pumps. The nanopores in polycarbonate (PC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) membranes were fabricated by the track-etching technique, the pore diameter was controlled in the range of 100 to 250 nm by adjusting the etching time. The results show that these EO pumps can provide high flow rates at low applied voltages (2-5 V). The maximum normalized flow rate is as high as 0.12 ml min(-1) V(-1) cm(-2), which is comparable to the best values of previously demonstrated EO pumps. We attribute this high performance to the unique properties of the track-etched nanopores in the membranes.

Abstract
A microfluidic counter current dialysis device for size based purification of DNA is described. The device consists of two polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) channels separated by a track etched polycarbonate membrane with a 50 nm pore size. Recovery of fluorescein across the membrane was compared with 10 and 80 nucleotide (nt) ssDNA to characterize the device. Recovery of all three analytes improved with decreasing flow rate. Size selectivity was observed. Greater than 2-fold selectivity between 10 nt and 80 nt ssDNA was observed at linear velocities less than 3mm s(-1). Increasing the ionic strength of the buffer increased transport across the membrane. Recovery of 80 nt ssDNA increased over 4-fold by adding 30 mM NaCl to the buffer. The effect was size dependent as 10 nt showed a smaller increase while the recovery of fluorescein was largely unaffected by increasing the ionic strength of the buffer.

Abstract
A new approach to functionalize the surface of polyester textiles is described in this study. Functionalization was achieved by incorporating pH/temperature-responsive polyelectrolyte microgels into the textile surface layer using UV irradiation. The aim of functionalization was to regulate polyester wettability according to ambient conditions by imparting stimuli-responsiveness from the microgel to the textile itself. Microgels consisted of pH/thermo-responsive microparticles of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) either alone or complexed with the pH-responsive natural polysaccharide chitosan. Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, ζ-potential measurements, and topographical analysis were used for surface characterization. Wettability of polyester textiles was assessed by dynamic wetting, water vapor transfer, and moisture regain measurements. One of the main findings showed that the polyester surface was rendered pH-responsive, both in acidic and alkaline pH region, owing to the microgel incorporation. With a marked relaxation in their structure and an increase in their microporosity, the functionalized textiles exhibited higher water vapor transfer rates both at 20 and 40 °C, and 65% relative humidity compared with the reference polyester. Also, at 40 °C, i.e., above the microgel Lower Critical Solution Temperature, the functionalized polyester textiles had lower moisture regains than the reference. Finally, the type of the incorporated microgel affected significantly the polyester total absorption times, with an up to 300% increase in one case and an up to 80% decrease in another case. These findings are promising for the development of functional textile materials with possible applications in biotechnology, technical, and protective clothing.

Abstract
The free energies of ion equilibrium partition between an aqueous KCl solution and nanofiltration (NF) membranes were investigated on the basis of the relationship of the transmembrane electrical potential (TMEP) and rejection. The measurements of TMEP and rejection were performed for Filmtec NF membranes in KCl solutions over a wide range of salt concentrations (1-60 mol·m(-3)) and pH values (3-10) at the feed side, with pressure differences in the range 0.1-0.6 MPa. The reflection coefficient and transport number, which were used to obtain the distribution coefficients on basis of irreversible thermodynamics, were fitted by the two-layer model with consideration of the activity coefficient. Evidence for dielectric exclusion under the experimental conditions was obtained by analyzing the rejection of KCl at the isoelectric point. The free energies were calculated, and the contribution of the electrostatic effect, dielectric exclusion, steric hindrance, and activity coefficient on the ion partitioning is elucidated. It is clearly demonstrated that the dielectric exclusion plays a central role.

TMEP was measured in a wide range of salt concentrations (1-60 mol·m(-3)) and pH values (3-10) at the feed side, with pressure differences in the range of 0.1-0.6 MPa. A two-layer model based on the Nernst-Planck equation was proposed to describe the relation between TMEP and permeation flux. From the pattern of these curves, the information of membrane structure could be deduced. In the concentration range investigated, TMEP in KCl solutions was always positive and decreased as the salt concentration increased. The contribution of the membrane potential to the TMEP decreased. TMEP was greatly affected by the feed pH. When the feed pH increased, the mobility of cations increased, which indicated that the charges of NF membranes were more negative. The zero point of TMEP and the minimum of rejection in KCl solution were consistent and occurred at the isoelectric point of NF membranes, while in MgCl(2) solution the zero point of TMEP located at a higher pH value. The TMEP in MgCl(2) solutions changed its sign at a given concentration, and by calculating the transport number the location of the minimum rejection could be determined.

Abstract
It is shown that in tangential electrokinetic measurements with porous films the porous structure makes contribution not only to the cell electric conductance (as demonstrated previously) but also to the observed streaming current. Both of these contributions give rise to dependences of streaming-potential and streaming-current coefficients on the channel height. However, due to the combined contribution of two phenomena, the dependence of streaming-potential coefficient on the channel height may be rather complicated and not allow for simple extrapolation. At the same time, the dependences of streaming-current coefficient and cell electric conductance on the channel height turn out linear and can be easily extrapolated to zero channel heights. This enables one to determine separately the contributions of external surface of porous film and of its porous structure to the streaming current and of the channel and porous structure to the cell electric conductance. This procedure is illustrated by the measurements of tangential electrokinetic phenomena and electric conductance with Millipore mixed-cellulose membrane filters of various average pore sizes (from 0.025 to 5 mum) in the so-called adjustable-gap cell of SurPASS electrokinetic instrument (Anton Paar GmbH). The design of this cell allows for easy and quasi-continuous variation of channel height as well as accurate determination of cell electric conductance, streaming-current coefficient, and channel height (from the cell hydraulic permeability). The quality of linear fits of experimental data has been found to be very good, and thus, the extrapolation procedures were quite reliable and accurate. Zeta-potentials could be determined of both external film and internal pore surfaces. It is demonstrated that the porous structures make considerable contributions to both streaming-current coefficient and cell electric conductance especially in the case of filters with larger pores. It is also found that, rather surprisingly, in filters with smaller pores the reduction in the filter electric conductivity turns out essentially stronger than could be expected proceeding from the filter porosity.

Abstract
Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) track-etched membranes with average pore diameters of 692 and 1629 nm were functionalized using the monomer N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and a photoinitiated "grafting-from" approach in which a surface-selective reaction has been most efficiently achieved by combinations of the unmodified PET surface with benzophenone and, alternatively, of an aminated PET surface with benzophenone carboxylic acid. Consistent estimations of the pore diameters of the base PET membranes and of the effective grafted polyNIPAAm layer thicknesses on the PET pore walls were possible only on the basis of the permeabilities measured with aqueous solutions of higher ionic strength (e.g., 0.1 M NaCl). However, the permeabilities measured with ultrapure water indicated that the "electroviscous effect" was significant for both base membranes. The influences of membrane pore diameter, surface charge, and solution ionic strength could be interpreted in the framework of the space-charge model. Functionalized membranes with collapsed grafted polymer hydrogel layer thicknesses of a few nanometers exhibited almost zero values of the zeta potential estimated from the trans-membrane streaming potential measurements. This was caused by a "hydrodynamic screening" of surface charge by the neutral hydrogel. Very pronounced changes in permeability as a function of temperature were measured for PET membranes with grafted polyNIPAAm layers, and the effective layer thickness in the swollen state--here up to approximately 300 nm--correlated well with the degree of functionalization. The subtle additional effects of solution ionic strength on the hydrodynamic layer thickness at 25 degrees C were different from the effects for the base PET membranes and could be explained by a variation in the degree of swelling, resembling a "salting-out" effect. Overall, it had been demonstrated that the functionalized capillary pore membranes are well suited for a detailed and quantitative evaluation of the relationships between the synthesis, the structure, and the function of grafted stimuli-responsive polymer layers.

Abstract
Measurements of transient membrane potential after current switch-off have been used to study the electrochemical and other transport properties of nanoporous track-etched membranes (pore diameter of 24 nm) in KCl solutions of various concentrations. Due to their identical straight cylindrical pores within the nanorange, those membranes are a suitable object for the studies of fundamentals of nanofluidics. We have developed a theory, which enabled us to interpret the transients of membrane potential in terms of such properties as the ion transport numbers, the membrane diffusion permeability, and the specific chemical capacity. The fitted values have been further interpreted within the scope of the space-charge model and revealed good self-consistency. The dependence of fitted values of the surface charge density on salt concentration was in agreement with the mechanism of fixed charge formation due to the dissociation of weakly acidic groups, and the surface charge density corresponded well to the measurements by an independent method. Thus, our measurements have revealed a quantitative applicability of standard space-charge model to the description of electrochemical phenomena and electrolyte diffusion in straight cylindrical pores of tens of nanometers in diameter. Proceeding from our data, we could estimate the limiting current densities for our nanofluidic system. They have turned out to be more than 2 orders of magnitude lower than usually encountered in microfluidic systems with electro-osmotic fluid delivery. That finding may point to a considerable handicap in the application of such nanofluidic elements in microsystems.

Abstract
Streaming potential variation with pressure measured through poly(ethylene terephthalate) track-etched membranes of different pore sizes led to the determination of an apparent interfacial potential zetaa in the presence of 10-2 M KCl. The variation of zetaa with the pore radius r0 is interpreted by (i) the electric double layer overlap effect and (ii) the presence of a conductive gel layer. We propose a method which integrates both effects by assuming a simple model for the conductive gel at the pore wall. We observed the following three domains of pore size: (i) r0 > 70 nm, where surface effects are negligible; (ii) approximately 17 nm < r0 < 70 nm, where the pore/solution interface could be described as a conductive gel of thickness around 1 nm; (iii) r0 < approximately 17 nm, which corresponds to the region strongly damaged by the ion beam and is not analyzed here. The first one (zeta = -36.2 mV) corresponds to the raw material when etching has completely removed the ion beam predamaged region, which corresponds to the second intermediate domain (zeta = -47.3 mV). There the conductance of the gel layer deduced from the treatment of streaming potential data was found to be compatible with the number of ionic sites independently determined by the electron spin resonance technique.

Abstract
An experimental investigation of the electrokinetic streaming potentials of both fully and partially retentive nanopores as compared with the filtration progress of dilute globular protein solution under different surface charge conditions was performed using hollow fibers. The streaming potential is generated by the electrokinetic flow effect within the electric double layer of the charged surface. Depending on the solution pH, both the protein and the pore wall can be either repulsive or attractive due to the long-range electrostatic interaction. The repulsive electrostatic interaction allows the protein particles to stay in a suspended state above the outer surface of hollow fibers instead of being deposited. The apparent streaming potential value at partially retentive pores is larger than that at fully retentive pores for the oppositely charged case; however, the opposite behavior is shown for the same-charged case. The axial-position-dependent streaming potential was also observed in order to explore the development of a concentration polarization layer during the cross-flow filtration. The time evolution of the streaming potential during the filtration of protein particles is related to the filtrate flux, from which it can be found to provide useful real-time information on particle deposition onto the outer surfaces of hollow fibers.

Abstract
Electrokinetic phenomenon is an important factor in pressure-driven membrane water filtration process. Zeta potential is a measurable and reliable parameter to characterize the charge property of membranes. This study investigated the effects of solution physico-chemistry on the zeta potential of nanofiltration membranes. A comprehensive semi-empirical mathematical model based on the Poisson-Boltzmann equation, Membrane Surface Charge model, was established. The correlations between the zeta potential, surface charge density and solution chemistry were well delineated by this new model. The empirical coefficients in the model are dependent on neither solution pH nor the ionic strength. They only reflect the characteristics of the electrokinetic property of the membrane--solution interface. The point of zero charge (PZC) can be calculated by combination of those empirical coefficients. The Membrane Surface Charge model also provides more information on understanding the charge interaction involved in membrane filtration system. The effects of potential determining ions, indifferent ions and specific adsorption of substances onto the membrane could be revealed by analyzing the coefficients of the model.
