Kurtzmanomyces insolitus sp. nov., a new anamorphic heterobasidiomycetous yeast species

Kurtzmanomyces shapotouensis sp. nov., an anamorphic, basidiomycetous yeast isolated from desert soil crusts

Two yeast strains isolated from soil crusts in the Shapotou region of Tengger Desert (north-western China) were grouped in the genus Kurtzmanomyces based on morphological characteristics. rRNA gene sequence analyses (including the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit rRNA gene and internal transcribed spacer region) indicated that these two strains represented a novel species of the genus Kurtzmanomyces, for which the name Kurtzmanomyces shapotouensis sp. nov. is proposed (type strain: CPCC 300020T = DSM 26579T = CBS 12707T). The MycoBank number of the novel species is MB 804959.

Bioprospecting highly diverse endophytic Pestalotiopsis spp. with antibacterial properties from Maytenus ilicifolia, a medicinal plant from Brazil

Thirteen endophytic fungal strains of the genus Pestalotiopsis were isolated from the medicinal plant Maytenus ilicifolia Mart. ex. Reiss (commonly known as “espinheira santa”) and their antimicrobial properties were investigated. Two isolates were successful in inhibiting the growth of the tested microorganisms ( Escherichia coli , Klebsiella pneumoniae , Micrococcus luteus , Staphylococcus aureus , and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)) using the technique of bioautographic thin-layer chromatography (TLC) agar overlay assay. An analysis based on a polyphasic approach integrating taxonomic information, morphological traits, RAPD markers, and the sequencing of the ITS1–5.8S–ITS2 of the rDNA led to the assignment of the isolates as belonging to the species Pestalotiopsis microspora , Pestalotiopsis vismiae , and Pestalotiopsis leucothoes . Therefore, the present study presents a new approach to the study of endophytic fungi of the genus Pestalotiopsis.

Phylloplane yeasts from Portugal: Seven novel anamorphic species in the Tremellales lineage of the Hymenomycetes (Basidiomycota) producing orange-coloured colonies

A survey of epiphytic yeasts on leaves of selected Mediterranean plant species collected at the 'Arrábida Natural Park' (Portugal) yielded about 850 isolates, mostly of basidiomycetous affinity. Amongst the basidiomycetes, 35 strains showed the following characteristics: production of orange-coloured colonies, ability to produce starch-like compounds, assimilation of D-glucuronic acid and/or inositol, inability to utilize nitrate, and formation of ballistoconidia by many of the isolates. This group of yeasts was assigned to the Tremellales lineage of the Hymenomycetes and was further characterised using a combination of conventional phenotypic identification tests with molecular methods, namely PCR fingerprinting and rDNA sequencing. Eight additional strains presumptively identified as Bullera armeniaca, B. crocea or Cryptococcus hungaricus were also studied. Twenty-eight strains could be assigned to or were phylogenetically related to recognised species of Dioszegia in the 'Luteolus clade', but the 15 remaining strains belonged to other clades within the Tremellales. Ten phylloplane isolates were identified as Dioszegia hungarica, one as D. aurantiaca, another as D. crocea and three others were ascribed to the recently described species D. zsoltii. Seven novel species, viz. Cryptococcus amylolyticus, C. armeniacus, C. cistialbidi, Dioszegia buhagiarii, D. catarinonii, D. fristingensis and D. takashimae, are proposed for the remaining strains that did not correspond to any of the hitherto recognised species.

Expanding world of ballistosporous yeasts: Distribution in the phyllosphere, systematics and phylogeny

Ecological and systematic aspects of ballistosporous yeasts inhabiting the phyllosphere of the Asia-Pacific region were reviewed in the light of recent advances. In the past 20 years, the extensive isolation studies of ballistosporous yeasts were carried out in the Asia-Pacific region, and the following new species were found in the phyllosphere of the main island of Japan, of the Ogasawara Islands in the Pacific Ocean, and of Thailand, New Zealand, and the Yunnan Province of China: Bensingtonia ingoldii, B. intermedia, B. miscanthi, B. naganoensis, B. musae, B. sakaguchii, B. subrosea, B. thailandica, and B. yamatoana; Bullera boninensis, B. coprosmaensis, B. hannae, B. huiaensis, B. miyagiana, B. mrakii, B. oryzae, B. penniseticola, B. pseudoalba, B. schimicola, B. sinensis, B. unica, B. variabilis, and B. waltii; Kockovaella imperatae, K. machilophila, K. phaffii, K. sacchari, K. schimae, and K. thailandica; Sporobolomyces blumeae, S. coprosmae, S. coprosmicola, S. dimmenae, S. draycophyllus, S. falcatus, S. griseoflavus, S. inositophilus, S. lactophilus, S. linderae, S. novazealandicus, S. nylandii, S. oryzicola, S. poonsookiae, S. ruber, S. sasicola, S. subbrunneus, S. taupoensis, S. vermiculatus, S. xanthus, and S. yunnanensis; and Udeniomyces megalosporus. Yeast species containing Q-10(H(2)), a monohydrated ubiquinone, have long been considered to be rare yeasts; however, these yeasts were proved to be common in the tropical and subtropical phyllosphere of Asia. The chemotaxonomic and molecular phylogenetic studies based on the sequence analysis of 18S rDNA revealed the heterogeneity of ballistosporous yeasts, which comprised species with polyphyletic phylogenetic origins. A new phylogenetic cluster, Subbrunneus, was newly found in the class Urediniomycetes as the fifth phylogenetical cluster of this class, based on the analysis of 18S rDNA sequences. The Subbrunneus cluster comprises four ballistosporous yeast species found in the phyllosphere of Japan and New Zealand. The future perspectives of basidiomycetous yeast systematics are discussed.
