Fast 3D T(2)-weighted MRI with Hadamard encoding in the slice select direction

Whole-brain mapping of mouse CSF flow via HEAP-METRIC phase-contrast MRI

Purpose

CSF plays important roles in clearing brain waste and homeostasis. However, mapping whole‐brain CSF flow in the rodents is difficult, primarily due to its assumed very low velocity. Therefore, we aimed to develop a novel phase‐contrast MRI method to map whole‐brain CSF flow in the mouse brain.

Methods

A novel generalized Hadamard encoding–based multi‐band scheme (dubbed HEAP‐METRIC, Hadamard Encoding APproach of Multi‐band Excitation for short TR Imaging aCcelerating) using complex Hadamard matrix was developed and incorporated into conventional phase contrast (PC)‐MRI to significantly increase SNR.

Results

Slow flow phantom imaging validated HEAP‐METRIC PC‐MRI’s ability to achieve fast and accurate mapping of slow flow velocities (~10² µm/s). With the SNR gain afforded by HEAP‐METRIC scheme, high‐resolution (0.08 × 0.08 mm in‐plane resolution and 36 0.4 mm slices) PC‐MRI was completed in 21 min for whole‐brain CSF flow mapping in the mouse. Using this novel method, we provide the first report of whole‐brain CSF flow in the awake mouse brain with an average flow velocity of ~200 µm/s. Furthermore, HEAP‐METRIC PC‐MRI revealed CSF flow was reduced by isoflurane anesthesia, accompanied by reduction of glymphatic function as measured by dynamic contrast‐enhanced MRI.

Conclusion

We developed and validated a generalized HEAP‐METRIC PC‐MRI for mapping low velocity flow. With this method, we have achieved the first whole‐brain mapping of awake mouse CSF flow and have further revealed that anesthesia reduces CSF flow velocity.

Sliding-slab three-dimensional TSE imaging with a spiral-In/Out readout

PURPOSE

T2 -weighted imaging is of great diagnostic value in neuroimaging. Three-dimensional (3D) Cartesian turbo spin echo (TSE) scans provide high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contiguous slice coverage. The purpose of this preliminary work is to implement a novel 3D spiral TSE technique with image quality comparable to 2D/3D Cartesian TSE.

METHODS

The proposed technique uses multislab 3D TSE imaging. To mitigate the slice boundary artifacts, a sliding-slab method is extended to spiral imaging. A spiral-in/out readout is adopted to minimize the artifacts that may be present with the conventional spiral-out readout. Phase errors induced by B0 eddy currents are measured and compensated to allow for the combination of the spiral-in and spiral-out images. A nonuniform slice encoding scheme is used to reduce the truncation artifacts while preserving the SNR performance.

RESULTS

Preliminary results show that each of the individual measures contributes to the overall performance, and the image quality of the results obtained with the proposed technique is, in general, comparable to that of 2D or 3D Cartesian TSE.

CONCLUSION

3D sliding-slab TSE with a spiral-in/out readout provides good-quality T2 -weighted images, and, therefore, may become a promising alternative to Cartesian TSE.

Optimizing the efficiency of high-field multivoxel spectroscopic imaging by multiplexing in space and time

A new strategy to yield information from the maximum number of voxels, each at the optimum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) per unit time, in MR spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) is introduced. In the past, maximum acquisition duty-cycle was obtained by multiplexing in time several single slices each repetition time (TR), while optimal SNR was achieved by encoding the entire volume of interest (VOI) each TR. We show that optimal SNR and acquisition efficiency can both be achieved simultaneously by multiplexing in space and time several slabs of several slices, each. Since coverage of common VOIs in 3D proton MRSI in the human brain typically requires eight or more slices, at 3 T or higher magnetic fields, two or more slabs can fit into the optimum TR (approximately 1.6 s). Since typically four or less slices would then fit into each slab, Hadamard encoding is favored in that direction for slice profile reasons. It is demonstrated that per fixed examination length, the new method gives, at 3 T, twice as many voxels, each of the same SNR and size, compared with current 3D chemical shift imaging techniques. It is shown that this gain will increase for more extensive spatial coverage or higher fields.

Reducing voxel bleed in Hadamard-encoded MRI and MRS

The point spread function (PSF) of Hadamard encoding deviates from its ideal profile due to practical (as opposed to intrinsic) reasons. Finite radiofrequency (RF) pulse length and gradient strength cause slice profile imperfections that lead to cross-talk ("voxel bleed") as large as 17% for a 1-KHz bandwidth, 5.12-ms RF pulse under 3 mT/m. This could adversely affect localization and quantification, and consequently clinical usefulness. A simple modification of the Hadamard RF pulse synthesis that exploits its unique ability to encode noncontiguous slices is proposed and shown to markedly improve the PSF. Computer simulation, in vitro and in vivo experiments confirm the theoretical derivation of voxel bleed reduction from approximately 17% to below 5% per Hadamard-encoded direction.

MRI inter-slice reconstruction using super-resolution

MRI reconstruction using super-resolution is presented and shown to improve spatial resolution in cases when spatially-selective RF pulses are used for localization. In 2-D multislice MRI, the resolution in the slice direction is often lower than the in-plane resolution. For certain diagnostic imaging applications, isotropic resolution is necessary but true 3-D acquisition methods are not practical. In this case, if the imaging volume is acquired two or more times, with small spatial shifts between acquisitions, combination of the data sets using an iterative super-resolution algorithm gives improved resolution and better edge definition in the slice-select direction. Resolution augmentation in MRI is important for visualization and early diagnosis. The method also improves the signal-to-noise efficiency of the data acquisition.
