Abstract
The common antihypertensive drugs are B-blockers and diuretics. For the determination of beta-blocker medicines (bisoprolol fumarate and carvedilol) and diuretic drug (Furosemide), new and accurate chromatographic method has been developed. The separation was achieved using a developing system that includes chloroform:methanol:ethyl acetate:ammonia (6:2:2:0.2 by volume) as a mobile phase and the bands were detected at 240 nm. The concentration ranges were 5-25, 1-7, and 1-3.5 μg/band for bisoprolol fumarate, carvedilol, and furosemide, respectively. This chromatographic approach is the first methodology for simultaneously determining bisoprolol fumarate, carvedilol, and furosemide in their pure forms and in their pharmaceutical dosage forms. The advantages of using known analytical procedures are their simplicity, speed, cost effectiveness, lack of laboriousness, and ability to save time as the three tablets are determined in one step and can be used for routine analysis of the investigated combinations in quality control laboratories. According to International Conference of Harmonization guidelines, the established procedures have been validated, and the results were statistically compared to those obtained by the reported reversed-phase-high-performance liquid chromatography methods using Student's t-test and F-test, with no significant difference between them, indicating that the proposed methods can be used for routine drug quality control analysis.

Abstract
Biomass pellets are required as a source of energy because of their abundant and high energy. The rapid measurement of pellets is used to control the biomass quality during the production process. The objective of this work was to use near infrared (NIR) hyperspectral images for predicting the properties, i.e., fuel ratio (FR), volatile matter (VM), fixed carbon (FC), and ash content (A), of commercial biomass pellets. Models were developed using either full spectra or different spatial wavelengths, i.e., interval successive projections algorithm (iSPA) and interval genetic algorithm (iGA), wavelengths and different spectral preprocessing techniques. Their performances were then compared. The optimal model for predicting FR could be created with second derivative (D2) spectra with iSPA-100 wavelengths, while VM, FC, and A could be predicted using standard normal variate (SNV) spectra with iSPA-100 wavelengths. The models for predicting FR, VM, FC, and A provided R2 values of 0.75, 0.81, 0.82, and 0.87, respectively. Finally, the prediction of the biomass pellets’ properties under color distribution mapping was able to track pellet quality to control and monitor quality during the operation of the thermal conversion process and can be intuitively used for applications with screening.

Abstract
A novel electrochemical sensor based on a molecularly imprinted polymer, poly(o-phenylenediamine) (PoPD), has been developed for selective and sensitive detection of furosemide. The sensor was prepared by incorporating of furosemide as template molecules during the electropolymerization of o-phenylenediamine on a gold electrode. To develop the molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP), the template molecules were removed from the modified electrode's surface by washing it with 0.25 mol L(-1) NaOH solution. The imprinted layer was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The sensor's preparation conditions including furosemide concentration, the number of CV cycles in the electropolymerization process, extraction solution of the template from the imprinted film, the incubation time and the pH level were optimized. The incubation of the MIP-modified electrode, with respect to furosemide concentration, resulted in a suppression of the K4[Fe(CN)6] oxidation process. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the response of the imprinted sensor was linear in the range of 1.0×10(-7)-7.0×10(-6) mol L(-1) of furosemide. The detection limit was obtained as 7.0×10(-8) mol L(-1) for furosemide by using this sensor. The sensor was successfully used to determine the furosemide amount in the tablet and in human urine samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sequential injection chromatography (SIC) is a young, ten years old, separation technique. It was proposed with the benefits of reagent-saving, rapid analysis, system miniaturization and simplicity. SIC with UV detection has proven to be efficient mostly for pharmaceutical analysis. In the current study, a stand-alone multi-wavelength fluorescence (FL) detector was coupled to an SIC system. The hyphenation was exploited for developing an SIC-FL method for the separation and quantification of amiloride (AML) and furosemide (FSM) in human urine and tablet formulation. RESULTS AML and FSM were detected using excitation maxima at 380 and 270 nm, respectively, and emission maxima at 413 and 470 nm, respectively. The separation was accomplished in less than 2.0 min into a C18 monolithic column (50 × 4.6 nm) with a mobile phase containing 25 mmol/L phosphate buffer (pH 4.0): acetonitrile: (35:65, v/v). The detection limits were found to be 12 and 470 ng/mL for AML and FSM, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The proposed SIC-FL method features satisfactory sensitivity for AML and FSM in urine samples for the minimum required performance limits recommended by the World Anti-Doping Agency, besides a downscaled consumption of reagents and high rapidity for industrial-scale analysis of pharmaceutical preparations.

Abstract
The kinetics of the title reaction showed first-order behaviour both in hexacyanoferrate(III) and osmium(VIII) and fractional order each in fursemide and alkali concentrations. The added product, [Fe(CN)6]4-, retarded the rate of reaction. The active species of osmium(VIII) in alkali appears to be [OsO5(OH)]3-. A mechanism involving a complex formed between osmium(VIII) and fursemide, followed by its oxidation with hexacyanoferrate(III) in a rate-determining step is proposed. A rate law for the mechanism was derived and verified. The formation constant, K2 for [OsO5(OH)]3-, K3 for the complex, and the rate constant of the slow step, k, were evaluated. The activation parameters Ea, Δ H#, Δ S#, Δ G# and log A were calculated as 55.2 ± 2kJ mol−1, 52.7 ± 2 kJ mol−1, - 52.0 ± 2 JK−1 mol−1, 69.8 ± 2.5 kJ mol−1 and 6.5 ± 0.1 respectively. Fursemide is used in the pharmacotherapy for various diseases and it is also considered as a doping agent in sports. A simple and specific procedure for its analysis was developed being based on its oxidation by alkaline hexacyanoferrate(III) in the presence of trace amount of osmium(VIII) catalyst. Three different methods have been recommended, namely, the rate constant method, fixed time method and fixed change in optical density method. of these, the latter two were found to be fast, simple, and accurate. from these methods, fursemide could be analysed from a few micrograms to milligrams per cm3. The interference by binders of tablets, and other possible substances like proteins and amino acids, have also been studied.

Abstract
This presented paper deals with a new methodology for the direct determination of amiloride in human urine. The methodology described is based on the sequential injection analysis technique (SIA) coupled with solid phase extraction (SPE) microcolumn. SPE microcolumn was used for selective retention of amiloride, while the urine matrix components were eluted with water carrier flow to the waste. Due to the acid-basic and polarity properties of amiloride molecule and principles of ion-exchange chromatography, it was possible to retain amiloride on the ion-exchange sorbent (SPE BAKER WCX-carboxy group). Eluting solution was 0.01 M HNO3+0.1 M KCl, flow rate 20 microl s(-1). The fluorescence detection of amiloride was performed at lambda(em) 385 nm (secondary filter). Recovery was found in the range 96.8-99.4% for 10 times diluted urine, linearity of determination in the range 0.5-100 microg ml(-1) (r=0.998), and 3sigma limit of detection (LOD) was 0.05 microg ml(-1). The whole procedure comprising raw sample pre-treatment, analyte detection and column reconditioning took 8 min. The proposed SIA-SPE method has been applied for direct determination of amiloride in human urine.

Abstract
A spectrophotometric method for simultaneous determination of Fe(III), Al(III) and Cu(II) using Alizarin Red S as a chelating agent was developed. The parameters controlling behavior of the system were investigated and optimum conditions were selected. A partial least-squares multivariate calibration method was used for the analysis of ternary mixtures of Fe(III), Al(III) and Cu(II) over the range of 450-6000, 140-4000 and 450-15000 ng ml(-1), respectively. Absorbance data were taken between 400 and 800 nm. Applying this method to simultaneous determination of these metal ions in several synthetic alloy solutions with total relative standard error of less than 5% validated the proposed method.

Abstract
The development of a multi-sensory fiber-optic based fluence rate probe (MSP) for light monitoring and dosimetry during photodynamic therapy (PDT) created the need for a robust multivariate signal analysis algorithm capable of quantifying the intensity of five component spectra, representing the sensors, which display a large degree of spectral overlap. Partial least squares (PLS) analysis, as an option for such an analysis algorithm, was evaluated through simulations in the presence of three types of noise, which experimentally may limit the accuracy of PLS quantification of component spectra contributions. Random, or white noise, background was varied over a range of 0-15% relative intensity. A non-random (Gaussian) background vector was simulated, as an experimentally relevant spectral interferent, over a range of 0-7% relative intensity. Spectral variation was modeled by a spectral shift of +/-1-5 nm. Procedures for selecting preferred combinations of fluorophores, with minimum possible spectral overlap, were developed. To illustrate the importance of this selection process, PLS performance results were compared for two possible combinations of five fluorophores, as well as for the combination of three fluorophores currently in experimental use with MSPs. Experimentally anticipated worst-case quantifications were identified for all three types of simulated noise (5% random background, 0.5% Gaussian background, and +/-2 nm spectral shift). The effects of single and combined types of noise were evaluated by independently varying each type of simulated noise over the experimentally relevant range. The mean percentage error in determining the fluorophore contributions and hence quantification of the fluence rate were compared with the required performance standard of better than 10% error for optical power meters in medical use. The PLS algorithm provided an accuracy of 7 +/- 2% for five fluorophores and 3.3 +/- 0.8% for three fluorophores, indicating that PLS is an appropriate choice for this application.

Abstract
A new, repeatable, and rapid method has been developed for resolution of binary mixtures of acetaminophen and diclofenac with minimum sample pretreatment and without separation of the analytes. The method, based on the PLS1 processing of absorbance data in the UV region, was successfully used for quantification of the drug content of three tablet preparations. The results obtained were in good agreement with HPLC recovery data. The method also enabled determination of drug-dissolution profiles of these commercial tablets, by simultaneous determination of both analytes during the dissolution test.

Abstract
Losartan, a highly effective blood pressure-lowering agent, has been widely used for the treatment of hypertension. A fast and reliable method for the determination of losartan was highly desirable to support formulation screening and quality control. A first-derivative UV spectroscopic method and HPLC were developed for the determination of losartan in the tablet dosage form. The first-derivative spectrum recorded between 220 and 320 nm and a zero-crossing technique for first-derivative measurement at 232.5 nm were selected. The selectivity and sensitivity of the method was in desirable range. In comparison with the direct UV method, first-derivative UV spectroscopy has a definite trough without any interference from UV absorbing-excipients. This method is also fast and economical in comparison with the more time-consuming HPLC method regularly used for formulation screening and quality control and can be used routinely by any laboratory possessing a spectrophotometer with a derivative accessory. The linear concentration ranges were 2-50 microg ml(-1), (D(1)=-0.0159C-0.0056, r=0.9994, n=6). Between-days CV of < or =2.9%, within-day CV of < or =2.1%, and analytical recovery close to 98.1% show the suitability of the method for determination in quality control.

Abstract
The polarographic behavior of amiloride hydrochloride has been studied in Britton-Robinson buffers of pH 1.9-11. In acidic medium at Ph< or =2, the dc-polarograms exhibited a single 4-electron cathodic irreversible wave, while at pH values >2, a second two-electron irreversible cathodic wave appeared at a more negative potential. The single or first wave may be attributed to the cleavage of the double bond of the -CH=NH of the imidino amide group with the release of NH(3). While the second wave may be due to the saturation of the C=O of the carboxamide moiety. A polarographic procedure of suffocate sensitivity for the determination of bulk amiloride drug in Britton-Robinson buffer at pH 2 is described. The calibration graph was obtained over the concentration range 2.5 x 10(-5) to 2.5 x 10(-4) M amiloride. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantitation (LOQ) of the procedure were 1 x 10(-5) and 3.3 x 10(-4) M bulk amiloride, respectively. Moreover, a differential-pulse adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetric procedure has been described to assay of the drug at lower concentration levels. The optimal conditions were: E(acc) = -0.9V, t(acc)=30 s, scan rate=20mV, pulse-height=90 mV and Britton-Robinson buffer of pH 8. The calibration graph was obtained over the concentration range 2 x 10(-8) to 1 x 10(-6) M for bulk amiloride. Both procedures were successfully applied to the determination of amiloride in tablets without the necessity for sample pretreatment or any time-consuming extraction or evaporation steps prior to the drug analysis.

Abstract
The cyclic voltammograms of amiloride at the hanging mercury drop electrode showed a single well-defined four-electron irreversible cathodic peak in Britton-Robinson (B-R) buffer of pH 2. At higher pH values (pH > or =3), two irreversible cathodic peaks corresponding to the transfer of four (first peak) and two (second peak) electrons, were obtained The peak potentials were shifted to more negative values on the increase of pH of the medium, implying the involvement of protons in the electrode reaction and that the proton-transfer reaction precedes the proper electrode process. The 4-electron single peak (pH 2) or the first peak (pH > or = 3) may be attributed to the cleavage of the -CH=NH double bond of the N-imidino amide group with the release of NH(3) molecule. While the second peak may be due to the saturation of the C?O double bond of the carboxamide moiety. Based on the interfacial adsorptive character of the drug onto the mercury electrode surface, a simple, sensitive and low cost square-wave adsorptive cathodic stripping (SWAdCS) voltammetric procedure was optimized for analysis of the drug. The optimal operational conditions of the proposed procedure were: accumulation potential E(acc)= -0.7 V, accumulation time t(acc)= 60-65s, scan increment= 10 mV, pulse-amplitude = 50-60 mV, frequency =120 Hz using a B-R buffer of pH 8 as a supporting electrolyte. The linear concentration range was found to be 2 x 10(-9) to 2 x 10(-7) M amiloride with limits of detection (LOD) and quantitation (LOQ) of 1.9 x 10(-10) and 6.3 x 10(-10) M, respectively. The procedure was successfully applied for determination of amiloride in pharmaceutical formulation and spiked in human serum. The LOD and LOQ of amiloride spiked in human serum were 5.7 x 10(-10) and 1.9 x 10(-9) M amiloride, respectively. The procedure did not require sample pretreatment or any time-consuming extraction or evaporation steps, other than deproteinization and then centrifugal separation of protein from serum sample prior to analysis of the drug.

Abstract
This work presents a simple and fast method for the simultaneous determination of amiloride and furosemide by digital derivative spectrophotometry. HCl 1 x 10(-2) mol/l dissolved in ethanol was used as solvent and to extract drugs from formulations. Subsequently the samples were evaluated directly by first digital derivative spectrophotometry, using a smoothing factor of 8 and scale factor of 1 x 10(-4). The simultaneous determination of furosemide and amiloride can be carried out at 241.4 and 343.6 nm, respectively. In both cases, the zero crossing approach was used. When both compounds are present together in a sample, it is possible to quantify one in the presence of the other, without mutual interference. The determination range was found to be of 6.9 x 10(-8) to 16 x 10(-5) and 6.8 x 10(-8) to 8 x 10(-5) mol/l, for amiloride and furosemide, respectively. A good level of repeatability (RSD) of 0.9 and 0.6% was observed for amiloride and furosemide, respectively. The ingredients commonly found in commercial pharmaceutical formulations do not interfere. The proposed method was applied to the determination of these drugs in pharmaceutical formulations.
