Abstract
Objective: To determine the prevalence of major neurological disorders in children less than 10 years of age. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in the framework of a population based, single centre, cross-sectional study at Ranbir Singh Pura town, 22 km south-west of Jammu city. Results: Eight cases of active epilepsy with a crude prevalence rate of 202 (95% confidence interval [CI] 180-220), five cases of Febrile seizures with a crude prevalence of 126 (95% CI 110-140) and eleven cases of cerebral palsy with a crude prevalence rate of 277 (95% CI 245-309) per 100,000 were found. Very few cases of other major neurological disorders were found. The prevalence rate of these disorders is estimated at same level as for other disorders such as - Post-meningitic sequelae, Infantile hemiparesis, Spinal deformity and Tic disorder is at 25 (95% CI 15-34) per 100,000. Interpretation: On the basis of the data obtained, the present study provides some valuable data on common neurological diseases among children in RS Pura town of Jammu district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To ascertain the prevalence of active epilepsy, febrile seizures (FS), cerebral palsy (CP) and tic disorders (TD) in aged 19 years or less. METHODS This was a cross-sectional observational study conducted as a two-stage door-to-door survey of a stratified randomly selected population in 2003-04. Trained field workers screened the population followed by case examination by the field neurologist. RESULTS A total of 16979 (male 8898, female 8081) subjects aged <or= 19 years were surveyed. The prevalence rates per 100,000 population of active epilepsy, FS, CP and TD with 95% confidence intervals are 700.87 (580.60-838.68), 1113.14 (960.07-1283.59), 282.70 (CI 208.43-374.82) and 35.34 (12.96-76.92) respectively. Active epilepsy prevalence shows a rising trend and that of other disorders a declining trend with age. Of the epileptics who had brain CT scans, 23.4% showed single or multiple lesions suggestive of neurocysticercosis. Regarding treatment, 23.5% of the epileptics never received any antiepileptic drugs. Among those with history of FS, 9.5% developed epilepsy later on. The prevalence of FS among slum dwellers is lower than in the non-slum population. Among CP cases, 39.6% gave history of birth anoxia, 16.7% kernicterus and 31.3% epilepsy. Prevalence of CP is significantly associated with lower education status. CONCLUSION The prevalence of CP and TD is lower than reported from western countries. CP prevalence is also comparatively lower than in many community studies from India. Compared to western nations, higher proportion of FS cases develops epilepsy. A third of the CP cases have seizures which is higher than in many Indian studies. Birth anoxia is a common cause of CP and educational underachievement is frequent.

Abstract
Approximately 30 to 50% of people suffering from Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (GTS) also fulfill diagnostic criteria for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Despite this high degree of comorbidity, very few studies have addressed the question of obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) in GTS patients using specific brain event-related potentials (ERP) responses. The aim of the current study was to quantify neurocognitive aspects of comorbidity, using ERPs. Fourteen adults with GTS (without OCD) were compared to a group of 12 participants with GTS and comorbid obsessive-compulsive symptoms (GTS+OCS), to a group of 15 participants with OCD and to a group of 14 control participants without neurological or psychiatric problems. The P200 and P300 components were recorded during a visual counting oddball task. Results showed intact P200 amplitude in all groups, whilst the P300 amplitude was affected differentially across groups. The P300 oddball effect was reduced in participants in both OCD and GTS+OCS groups in the anterior region. However, the P300 oddball effect was significantly larger in participants of the GTS group compared to all other groups, mostly in the parietal region. These findings suggest that adults with GTS are characterized by enhanced working memory updating processes and that the superimposition of OCS can lead to a reduction of these processes. The discrepancy between our findings and results obtained in previous studies on GTS could reflect the modulating effect of OCS on late ERP components.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The main aim of the current study was to assess whether adults with either Tourette syndrome (TS) or chronic tic disorder (CTD) show a similar neuropsychological profile. Neuropsychological investigations of tic disorders have been mostly focused on children, mainly because symptoms peak during that period. Little has been carried out on adults, even if a significant proportion of the tic population experience moderate or marked levels of tic frequency throughout adulthood. Still, it is not clear whether neuropsychological performances are affected to the same degree in adults with TS and CTD. METHOD Patients diagnosed with TS were compared with a CTD group and a control group free of psychiatric or neurological diagnosis, comparable in terms of age, gender, and intelligence. All participants completed two tests of memory (Rey-Osterreich Complex Figure, California Verbal Learning Test), one test of motor dexterity (Purdue pegboard), and four tasks of executive function (Stroop, Color Trail Test, Tower of London, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test). RESULTS TS and CTD patients showed nonverbal memory impairments while verbal memory and executive functioning remained intact. Results also indicated that nonverbal memory performances decrease as a function of tic severity. CONCLUSION Both TS and CTD patients present a specific nonverbal deficit whilst the executive and motor functions are relatively intact. The two tic disorder subgroups might be part of a spectrum implicating mainly nonverbal memory.

Abstract
Tourette syndrome (TS) is a common disorder which typically occurs during childhood or early adolescence. There is no definitive diagnostic test for TS. The objective of this study was to demonstrate whether neurophysiological abnormalities of the blink reflex can be observed in children with TS. We enrolled 15 children with TS, diagnosed according to DSM IV Diagnostic Criteria, and 15 controls. The blink reflex was elicited by stimulating the supraorbital nerve in order to measure the early response (R1), homolateral and contralateral R2 (late) responses, amplitude of R1 and duration of R2. The mean duration of R2 was significantly longer in TS patients than in the controls (P < 0.001, Student's t-test). An abnormal pattern of the blink reflex can be, even in childhood, an early neurophysiologic marker of TS, which is not related to the duration of TS or to the age of onset.

Abstract
Over the last years evidence on the overlap between tic-disorders (TD) and obsessive compulsive behavior/disorder (OCB/OCD) has increased. The main focus of research have been the phenomenological and epidemiological similarities and differences in samples of different age, primary diagnosis (TD vs. OCD) including the co-occurrence of both. Unfortunately, only a minority of studies included all three groups (TD, TD + OCD, OCD). Nevertheless, new insight concerning possible subtypes for both TD and OCD has been gained. While some authors concentrated on OCD with/without tics we will summarize the field of TD and OCB/OCD from the viewpoint of tics, since OCB plays an important role in patients with TD. Thereby we will not only sharpen the clinicans' awareness of known differences in phenomenology, epidemiology, genetics and neurobiology, aimed to improve their diagnoses and treatment but also highlight the gaps of knowledge and discuss possibilities for further research in this field.

Abstract
Tic disorders are stereotypic behaviours,more frequent than once believed, and therefore likely to be encountered by primary care physicians. Tics usually begin in childhood and are the clinical hallmark of Tourette Syndrome (TS), the most common cause of tics. TS is a relatively common neurobehavioural disorder with a spectrum of manifestations that wax and wane during its natural course. The pathophysiology of tics, at molecular and cellular level, is still unknown,whereas structural and functional neuroimaging studies have shown the involvement of the basal ganglia and related cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuits, and the dopaminergic neuronal system. Moreover, TS has a strong genetic background. The management of TS is often complicated by the presence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other behaviour disorders. The correct diagnosis is a fundamental step for a proper management of these disorders, and a multimodal treatment is usually indicated. This approach includes educational and supportive interventions, as well as pharmacological treatments when tics are at their worst.

Abstract
The present review is aimed at providing practical assistance to the clinical neurologist in reaching a diagnosis, understanding the pathogenic mechanisms of movement disorders associated with systemic diseases, and determining appropriate therapy. Infectious disease by direct effect or as an acquired autoimmune neurological disease, stroke, hypoxia-ischemia, paraneoplastic syndromes, collagen disorders, endocrine, liver and kidney diseases that may cause hypokinetic or hyperkinetic abnormal movement are considered separately. The type and evolution of abnormal movement caused by systemic disease vary with age and underlying pathology. Therapy for abnormal movements should include a primary treatment for the systemic disease.

Abstract
Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a childhood onset neurological disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. It may be associated with a number of co-morbidities including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive compulsive symptomatology, and behaviour disorders. Prevalence of TS is higher than previously thought, and may be present in up to 2% of the population. Tourette's syndrome has a significant genetic component. Inheritance may involve several mechanisms including autosomal dominant, bilinear, or polygenic mechanisms. Pathophysiology is still unknown, although is thought to involve striatocortical circuits. Treatment begins with modification of the work and home environment. For more severe cases, medications such as tetrabenazine and neuroleptics may be helpful. Treatment of co-morbidities needs to be considered, as these may result in moredisability than the tics themselves.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Drug-induced parkinsonism is common but often unrecognized. In addition to neuroleptics, many medications of diverse chemical nature may induce or exacerbate parkinsonism REVIEW SUMMARY Reports in the literature of drug-induced parkinsonism or of an underlying parkinsonian disorder exacerbated by a medication were located using MEDLINE, and pertinent bibliographies were reviewed. The range of medications that may induce or exacerbate parkinsonism spans the medical specialties. Along with neuroleptics, selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitors, lithium, valproic acid, calcium channel blockers, antiarrhythmics, procholinergics, chemotherapeutics, amphotericin B, estrogens, and others have been implicated. CONCLUSIONS This review seeks to enhance clinicians' knowledge of potential medications producing iatrogenic parkinsonism and encourage their vigilance in recognizing it.

Abstract
Carcinoma of the lung is the most common cause of cancer death worldwide. The estimated 5-year survival ranges from 6-16%, depending on the cell type. The best opportunity for improving survival of lung cancer patients is through early detection, when curative surgical resection is possible. Although the subjects at increased risk for developing carcinoma of the lung (long-term smokers) can be identified, only 10-20% of this group will ultimately develop the disease. Screening tests of long-term smokers employed to date (radiography and sputum cytology) have not been successful in reducing lung cancer mortality. The application of molecular markers specific for lung cancer offers new possibilities for early detection. Hypermethylation of CpG islands in the promoter regions of genes is a common phenomenon in lung cancer, as demonstrated by the analysis of the methylation status of over 40 genes from lung cancer tumors, cell lines, patient sputum and/or serum. Determination of the methylation patterns of multiple genes to obtain complex DNA methylation signatures promises to provide a highly sensitive and specific tool for lung cancer diagnosis. When combined with the development of non-invasive methods to detect such signatures, this may provide a viable method to screen subjects at risk for lung cancer.
