Network approach to patterns in stratocumulus clouds

Stratocumulus clouds (Sc) have a significant impact on the amount of sunlight reflected back to space, with important implications for Earth's climate. Representing Sc and their radiative impact is one of the largest challenges for global climate models. Sc fields self-organize into cellular patterns and thus lend themselves to analysis and quantification in terms of natural cellular networks. Based on large-eddy simulations of Sc fields, we present a first analysis of the geometric structure and self-organization of Sc patterns from this network perspective. Our network analysis shows that the Sc pattern is scale-invariant as a consequence of entropy maximization that is known as Lewis's Law (scaling parameter: 0.16) and is largely independent of the Sc regime (cloud-free vs. cloudy cell centers). Cells are, on average, hexagonal with a neighbor number variance of about 2, and larger cells tend to be surrounded by smaller cells, as described by an Aboav-Weaire parameter of 0.9. The network structure is neither completely random nor characteristic of natural convection. Instead, it emerges from Sc-specific versions of cell division and cell merging that are shaped by cell expansion. This is shown with a heuristic model of network dynamics that incorporates our physical understanding of cloud processes.

Simulation of cellular packing in non-proliferative epithelia

The physical laws governing the morphogenesis of biological tissues remain largely misunderstood. In particular, the role of the mechanical interactions occurring in this process needs to be better understood and studied. Inner follicular cells surrounding the oocytes of Ciona intestinalis form an epithelial monolayer resulting from an accretion process (without mitosis or apoptosis). This epithelium is elementary and useful for morphogenesis studies: the cells exhibit polygon packing with a specific but non-systematically repeatable topology (i.e. the distribution of pentagons, hexagons and heptagons changes). To understand the role of mechanical forces in tissue formation, we propose an innovative "2D spherical" model based on the physics of divided media. This approach simulates the cellular mechanical behavior and epithelium structuration by allowing cells to adopt a large variety of shapes and to self-organize in response to mechanical interactions. The numerical parameters considered in the model are derived from experimental data in order to perform pertinent and realistic simulations. The results obtained are compared to biological observations using the same counting method to characterize epithelium topology. Numerical and experimental data appear close enough to validate the model. It is then used for exploratory studies dealing with "Tissue Development Speed" variation, which is not easily attainable by experimentation. We show that the formation speed of the tissue influences its topology and hence its packing organization.

Universality in two-dimensional cellular structures evolving by cell division and disappearance

The dynamics of two-dimensional cellular networks is written in terms of coupled population equations, which describe how the population of s-sided cells is affected by cell division and disappearance. In these equations the effect of the rest of the foam on the disappearing or dividing cell is treated as a local mean field. Under not too restrictive conditions, the equilibrium distribution P(s) of cells satisfies a linear difference equation of order two or higher. The population equations are asymptotically integrable. The asymptotic integrability implies a "universal" distribution P(s) approximately Cs-kZs for large values of s, which is also the Boltzmann distribution associated with the maximum entropy inference. Asymptotic integrability of the population equations is absent in a global mean-field approximation. The importance of short-range topological information to control the evolution of foams is thus confirmed.

A three-dimensional vertex dynamics cell model of space-filling polyhedra simulating cell behavior in a cell aggregate

We developed a three-dimensional (3D) cell model of a multicellular aggregate consisting of several polyhedral cells to investigate the deformation and rearrangement of cells under the influence of external forces. The polyhedral cells fill the space in the aggregate without gaps or overlaps, consist of contracting interfaces and maintain their volumes. The interfaces and volumes were expressed by 3D vertex coordinates. Vertex movements obey equations of motion that rearrange the cells to minimize total free energy, and undergo an elementary process that exchanges vertex pair connections when vertices approach each other. The total free energy includes the interface energy of cells and the compression or expansion energy of cells. Computer simulations provided the following results: An aggregate of cells becomes spherical to minimize individual cell surface areas; Polygonal interfaces of cells remain flat; Cells within the 3D cell aggregate can move and rearrange despite the absence of free space. We examined cell rearrangement to elucidate the viscoelastic properties of the aggregate, e.g. when an external force flattens a cell aggregate (e.g. under centrifugation) its component cells quickly flatten. Under a continuous external force, the cells slowly rearrange to recover their original shape although the cell aggregate remains flat. The deformation and rearrangement of individual cells is a two-step process with a time lag. Our results showed that morphological and viscoelastic properties of the cell aggregate with long relaxation time are based on component cells where minimization of interfacial energy of cells provides a motive force for cell movement.
