Abstract
Moraxella catarrhalis (M. catarrhalis) was an important pathogen closely associated with respiratory tract infections. We employed the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) coupled with nanoparticle-based lateral flow biosensor (LFB) and fluorescence testing technique for formulating two diagnostic methods for M. catarrhalis detection, termed M. catarrhalis-LAMP-LFB assay and M. catarrhalis-LAMP-FRT, respectively. The M. catarrhalis-LAMP-LFB system incorporated the use of biotin-14-dCTP and a forward loop primer (LF) with a hapten at the 5' end. This design in LAMP reaction enabled the production of double-labeled products that could be effectively analyzed using the lateral flow biosensor (LFB). For the M. catarrhalis-LAMP-FRT assay, the LF was modified with a sequence at 5' end, and a fluorophore, as well as a black hole quencher, were strategically labeled at the 5' end and within the middle of the new LF. The restriction endonuclease Nb.BsrDI could accurately recognize and cleave the newly synthesized double-strand terminal sequences, resulting in the separation of the fluorophore from the black hole quencher and releasing fluorescence signals. Both assays have been proven to be highly sensitive and specific, capable of detecting genomic DNA of M. catarrhalis at concentrations as low as 70 fg, with no cross-reactivity observed with non-M. catarrhalis pathogens. Furthermore, both methods successfully identified M. catarrhalis in all clinical samples within 1 h that were confirmed positive by real-time PCR, exhibiting superior sensitivity than conventional culture methods. Herein, the newly developed two LAMP-based assays were rapid and reliable for M. catarrhalis detection and hold significant promise for deployment in point-of-care (POC) settings.

Abstract
This review explores the body of scientific information available on the antimicrobial properties of essential oils against pathogens responsible for respiratory infections and critically compares this to what is recommended in the Layman's aroma-therapeutic literature. Essential oils are predominantly indicated for the treatment of respiratory infections caused by bacteria or viruses (total 79.0 %), the efficacy of which has not been confirmed through clinical trials. When used in combination, they are often blended for presumed holistic synergistic effects. Of the essential oils recommended, all show some degree of antioxidant activity, 50.0 % demonstrate anti-inflammatory effects and 83.3 % of the essential oils showed antihistaminic activity. Of the essential oils reviewed, 43.8 % are considered non-toxic while the remaining essential oils are considered slightly to moderately toxic (43.7 %) or the toxicity is unknown (12.5 %). Recommendations are made for further research into essential oil combinations.

Abstract
To assess the role of Moraxella catarrhalis complications in the setting of HIV disease, and to evaluate their occurrence and outcome according to several epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory parameters, the clinical records of 2123 consecutive HIV-infected patients hospitalized in a 9-year period were retrospectively reviewed, and 4 cases of community-acquired M. catarrhalis pneumonia were identified. Three adult patients had a diagnosis of AIDS and severe concurrent immunodeficiency (with a CD4+ lymphocyte count below 60 cells/microL), while the fourth case involved a child with vertical HIV disease. Leukopenia and neutropenia were never present, but no patient received a potent antiretroviral regimen at the time of disease onset. A concurrent respiratory infection by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Mycobacterium tuberculosis was recognized in 2 of 4 patients. Isolated M. catarrhalis strains were susceptible to all tested antimicrobial compounds (save ampicillin in 2 cases), and appropriate antimicrobial treatment led to clinical and microbiological cure in all described episodes. Only 8 cases of HIV-associated Moraxella spp. disease have been reported to date in seven different literature reports (6 cases of pneumonia, and 1 of septicemia). According to our experience, M. catarrhalis may be responsible for appreciable morbidity among patients with advanced HIV infection, especially when a low CD4+ cell count or coexisting respiratory disease are present. Clinicians and microbiologists who care for HIV-infected patients should carefully consider the potential pathogenic role of Moraxella spp. organisms.

Abstract
We describe the successful treatment of Moraxella osloensis bacteremia in a 2-year-old boy who presented with fever, petechial rash, and exacerbation of reactive airway disease. We also review the 12 cases previously reported in the literature.

Abstract
The antimicrobial activity of merocyanine 540 (MC 540), a photosensitizing dye previously used to purge malignant cells from autologous bone marrow grafts, was evaluated against a panel of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and Candida albicans in the presence and absence of light. In the absence of light, MC 540 demonstrated no antibacterial activity against any of the organisms tested. When combined with increasing intervals of photoillumination, growth inhibition was observed with all Gram-positive organisms tested except Mycobacterium fortuitum. Photosensitizing growth inhibition was also observed with Moraxella catarrhalis but not with any other Gram-negative bacilli including members of the Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, Stenotrophomonas maltophila, or Burkhoderia cepacia. These results suggested that differences in cell wall structure confer resistance to the photodamaging effects of the dye. MC 540 exhibited no antimicrobial activity against C. albicans in the presence or absence of light.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of serum antibody levels to Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis with age, gender and smoking in an elderly population. The study population comprised all the inhabitants aged 65 years or over in a rural municipality in south-western Finland. Serum samples were obtained from 1,174 out of a total of 1,360 subjects. Bacterial antibodies were measured by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) using pneumolysin and whole bacterial cells of H. influenzae and M. catarrhalis (mixture of 10 different strains for both) as antigens. The main findings were as follows: (i) antibody levels generally decreased with increasing age both in men and in women; (ii) antibody titres against H. influenzae and M. catarrhalis were higher in men than in women; and (iii) antibody titres to H. influenzae and M. catarrhalis, but not to S. pneumoniae, were significantly higher in smokers than in non-smokers. These data suggest that antibody-mediated protection against respiratory pathogens may be impaired in the elderly, leading to a higher susceptibility to respiratory tract infections, that the exposure to H. influenzae and M. catarrhalis may be higher in men than in women, and that smokers have more respiratory infections or colonization due to these 2 bacteria than do non-smokers.

Abstract
Branhamella catarrhalis causes lower respiratory tract infections in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The outer membrane protein CD (OMP-CD) of B. catarrhalis is a major, heat-modifiable OMP. The goals of this study are to characterize the degree of conservation of OMP-CD among strains and to investigate if OMP-CD maintains its homogeneity under the effect of host immune selective pressure. Isolates of B. catarrhalis were collected prospectively from patients with bronchiectasis and chronic bronchitis. We studied the OMP-CD gene by analysis of PCR restriction fragment length polymorphisms (PCR-RFLP) and further determined DNA sequence of the CD gene of eight selected isolates. Five patterns of PCR-RFLP of the OMP-CD gene were observed among all isolates when the gene was digested with Sau3AI. The sequence analysis revealed a high degree of homogeneity in OMP-CD among strains of B. catarrhalis. Three regions of OMP-CD with minimal sequence heterogeneity were identified. The sequences of the OMP-CD gene of isolates collected from patients colonized with the same strain for up to 6 months was identical. These observations establish that the OMP-CD of B. catarrhalis recovered from clinical isolates is highly conserved among strains.

Abstract
We report two cases of Moraxella catarrhalis (M. catarrhalis) bacteremia in apparently healthy children. One patient had bilateral otitis media and the other had pharyngitis and sinusitis; both patients had uncomplicated clinical courses. A literature review revealed 22 reported cases of M. catarrhalis bacteremia in children, 14 (63%) of which occurred in patients who had no identified underlying condition. Eight (36%) cases were seen in children who were immunocompromised. Nine (40%) patients presented with either purpura, petechia, or a maculopapular rash. M. catarrhalis is well known as a respiratory pathogen, but it has not been recognized as a common cause of unsuspected bacteremia in children.

Abstract
It appears that many commonly recognized syndromes such as the ARDS may well be caused by agents that have only recently emerged as respiratory pathogens. HPS represents one such entity. It appears likely that the increasing pressure of antibiotic use as well as the reemergence of certain pathogens will continue to challenge the clinician. Paramount to the identification and treatment of unusual pneumonias will be the degree with which an effort is made to make an etiologic diagnosis through sputum examination, transtracheal aspirate, bronchoscopy, or lung biopsy. Although pneumococcal pneumonia is the most common community-acquired pneumonia seen by practicing physicians, in all likelihood from time to time a physician will encounter pneumonia caused by one of the unusual pathogens described in this article or else by an altogether new pathogen.
