Abstract
Tissue affinities are conventionally determined from in vivo steady-state tissue and plasma or plasma-water chemical concentration data. In silico approaches were initially developed for preclinical species but standardly applied and tested in human physiologically-based kinetic (PBK) models. Recently, generic PBK models for farm animals have been made available and require partition coefficients as input parameters. In the current investigation, data for species-specific tissue compositions have been collected, and prediction of chemical distribution in various tissues of livestock species for cattle, chicken, sheep and swine have been performed. Overall, tissue composition was very similar across the four farm animal species. However, small differences were observed in moisture, fat and protein content in the various organs within each species. Such differences could be attributed to factors such as variations in age, breed, and weight of the animals and general conditions of the animal itself. With regards to the predictions of tissue:plasma partition coefficients, 80 %, 71 %, 77 % of the model predictions were within a factor 10 using the methods of Berezhkovskiy (2004), Rodgers and Rowland (2006) and Schmitt (2008). The method of Berezhkovskiy (2004) was often providing the most reliable predictions except for swine, where the method of Schmitt (2008) performed best. In addition, investigation of the impact of chemical classes on prediction performance, all methods had very similar reliability. Notwithstanding, no clear pattern regarding specific chemicals or tissues could be detected for the values predicted outside a 10-fold change in certain chemicals or specific tissues. This manuscript concludes with the need for future research, particularly focusing on lipophilicity and species differences in protein binding.

Abstract
Circumanal glands are prominent features of the canine perianal skin, which are often located near to the sebaceous glands and apocrine glands. As the functional relevance of circumanal glands is yet unknown, we studied the localisation of sialic acids and anti-microbial substances (lysozyme, immunoglobulin A, lactoferrin, β-defensin) in these glandular structures by lectin histochemistry and immunohistochemistry. The glands exhibited a number of sialic acids that were linked to α2-6Gal/GalNAc and α2-3Galβ1-4GlcNAc. Additionally, lysozyme, lactoferrin and β-defensin could be demonstrated in the three types of skin glands, whereas IgA was only detectable in the apocrine glands. The results of the study suggest the specific significance of the circumanal glands. Independent of a certain endocrine role, their products may mainly function as protective agents to preserve the integrity of the anal region, considering that sialic acids and anti-microbial substances are important in defence mechanisms.

Abstract
The distribution of sialic acids and antimicrobial products (lysozyme, IgA, lactoferrin, β-defensin 2) as well as Rab3D in the eccrine glands of porcine snout skin was studied by sialoglycoconjugate histochemistry and immunohistochemistry. The secretory epithelium consisted of two types of secretory cells: dark and clear cells. The dark cells exhibited considerable amounts of sialoglycoconjugates, which included O-acetylated sialic acids, whereas sialic acids in the sequence Siaα-2-3Gal1-4GlcNAc were confined to some of the dark cells. All antimicrobial substances and Rab3D were demonstrated to be also mainly present in some of the dark cells. Additionally, in the cytological and cytochemical features, the different characteristics were observed among the dark cells. The results obtained are discussed with regard to the functional significance of the eccrine glands. The secretory products elaborated by this gland type may function as protective agents in order to preserve the skin integrity of the snout region, considering that sialic acids and antimicrobial substances are important in general defense mechanisms.

Abstract
The functional properties of sialic acids appear to be manifold. Additionally, antimicrobial substances serve as a non-specific defense against microorganisms. In this study, therefore, the localization of sialic acids and antimicrobial substances in the anal glands of dog was studied by sialoglycoconjugate histochemistry and immunohistochemistry. The secretory epithelium, luminal secretions and excretory ducts exhibited high levels of sialoglycoconjugates that terminated in Siaα2-6Gal/GalNAc or Siaα2-3Gal1-4GlcNAc. Additionally, O-acetylated sialic acids were detectable in these glandular structures. Antimicrobial substances, such as lysozyme, immunoglobulin A (IgA), lactoferrin and the peptide group of β-defensins, were also demonstrated as products of the anal glands. The results obtained are discussed with regard to the functional significance of the anal glands. These secretory products may create a defensive barrier against microbial invasion at the anal mucosa.

Abstract
There is a demand by certain ethnic consumer groups in the United Kingdom for skin-on, singed carcasses, primarily from older sheep, but their production is illegal under current EU legislation. The aim of this study was to devise a protocol to produce carcasses having the desired 'smoked' colour and odour and an acceptable microbiology. A successful result could form the basis of a case to revise the legislation. Three key steps in the selected procedure were carcass singeing using specially designed gas burner equipment, pressure washing to clean the carcass and then evisceration. It was shown that a second heat application, termed 'toasting', if applied after evisceration, significantly (P<0.001) reduced Enterobacteriaceae and TVC counts on carcasses before chilling. Microbiological quality was also improved when toasting was the final step, following carcass splitting and inspection. Carcasses produced in this way had significantly (P<0.001) lower Enterobacteriaceae and TVC counts before chilling than conventionally dressed sheep carcasses produced in the same abattoir.

Abstract
In sheep, lesions caused by Psoroptes ovis, the sheep scab mite, may become colonized by Staphylococcus aureus. The present study compares clinical signs, lesional area and the immune response to P. ovis and S. aureus in P. ovis-infested sheep with and without secondary S. aureus infection. No differences were detected in the clinical signs or lesional areas in the S. aureus-positive and -negative sheep. However, 6 weeks after infestation an IgG but not IgE isotype antibody response to S. aureus was detected in the S. aureus-positive but not the S. aureus-negative group of sheep. This response targeted S. aureus antigens with molecular weights of approximately 36, 38, 50 and 65 kDa. In addition, 6 weeks after infestation an IgE response to P. ovis was detected in the S. aureus-positive but not the S. aureus-negative group of sheep.

Abstract
Cytochemistry of glycoconjugates in the apocrine glands in the scrotal skin of the horse was studied using cytochemical methods for electron microscopy, particularly lectin cytochemistry. The secretory cells possessed a variable number of secretory vesicles, a well-developed Golgi apparatus, and abundant cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. Additionally, the basolateral plasma membrane formed numerous interdigitating folds. Glycoconjugates with vicinal diol groupings were present predominantly in the secretory vesicles, the Golgi apparatus, the surface coat of the plasma membrane, and the majority of the intracellular membranes. With lectin cytochemistry, the secretory vesicles of the glandular cells exhibited glycoproteins with different terminal sugars (alpha-D-mannose, beta-D-galactose beta-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, and sialic acid). Several sugars were distinctly prominent in the surface coat of the plasma membrane of the secretory cells. The cytochemical properties of the complex glycoconjugates found are discussed in relation to the specific functions of the glandular secretions. These glands may have an important role in not only thermoregulation but protection of the scrotal skin, a specific body region.

Abstract
The localization of complex glycoconjugates in the nasolabial glands of the Japanese deer (C. nippon yakushimae) was studied using various histochemical methods, including lectin histochemistry, viewed using both light and electron microscopy. The secretory epithelium and luminal secretion of the deer nasolabial glands exhibited neutral and acidic glycoconjugates with different saccharide residues (alpha-D-mannose, alpha-N-acetyl-D-galactosamine, beta-D-galactose, beta-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and sialic acid). Additionally, O-acetylated sialic acids were detectable in the glandular acini. The results obtained are discussed with regard to the specific functions of the glandular secretion, which may particularly improve water retention on the skin surface and protect against physical damage as well as microbial contamination. Furthermore, our results support the view of a salivary nature of this gland type.

The epithelial cells and luminal secretion of these glands exhibited considerable amounts of glycoconjugates with various saccharide residues, such as alpha-D-mannose, alpha-L-fucose, beta-D-galactose, beta-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and sialic acid, including O-acetylated sialic acid. Several sugars (alpha-D-mannose, alpha-L-fucose, and beta-D-galactose) were also detectable in the secretion of sebaceous glands present. Additionally, lysozyme and the peptide group of beta-defensins are demonstrated as products of the apocrine ceruminous glands and sebaceous glands. The results obtained are discussed with regard to the functional significance of the glandular secretions. It is suggested that the complex carbohydrates, lysozyme and beta-defensins found in the ceruminous gland secretions are involved in the function of cerumen as a general antimicrobial protective agent in the external auditory canal.

Abstract
The eccrine nasolabial glands were found in the hypodermis of the nasal plane in the North American raccoon (Procyon lotor). In addition to light and electron microscopic observations, the distribution and selectivity of complex glycoconjugates in the eccrine tubular glands of the raccoon snout skin were studied using various histochemical methods, particularly lectin staining. The secretory epithelium and the luminal secretions exhibited high amounts of glycoconjugates with various saccharide residues (alpha-D: -mannose, alpha-L: -fucose, beta-D: -galactose, beta-N-acetyl-D: -glucosamine, sialic acid). The excretory duct cells also showed positive reactions with most of the histochemical methods applied. The results are discussed with regard to possible functions of the glandular secretions. The complex glycoconjugates that are produced by the eccrine nasolabial glands may be related to moistening of the skin surface as well as protecting the epidermis against physical damage or microbial contamination. This is the first report on the glands in the snout skin of carnivores.

Abstract
In the eccrine glands of the digital pads of the North American raccoon (Procyon lotor), ultrastructural localization of glycoproteins with various saccharide residues was studied using preferably lectin cytochemical methods. Secretory granules observed in the dark cells exhibited glycoproteins with different terminal sugars (alpha-D-mannose, beta-D-galactose, beta-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and sialic acid). The cytoplasm of the clear cells contained numerous glycogen particles. Several sugars were also detectable in the surface coat of the plasma membrane of the secretory cells. The results obtained could be helpful in understanding secretion production and cell related secretion functions of the eccrine glands of the raccoon digital foot pads.

Abstract
The distribution and selectivities of glycoconjugates in the ceruminous glands of the North American raccoon (Procyon lotor) were studied by light and electron microscopic histochemical methods, particularly lectin histochemistry. In the modified apocrine glands present, the apocrine secretion mode was combined with exocytosis, whereby the secretory epithelium and the luminal secretion of the ceruminous glands exhibited considerable amounts of complex carbohydrates with various terminal sugars (alpha-D-mannose, beta-D-galactose, alpha-L-fucose, alpha-N-acetyl-galactosamine, beta-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, N-acetyl-neuraminic acid). Alpha-L-fucose and N-acetyl-neuraminic acid were distinctly prominent in secretory granules or within the free surface coat of the plasma membrane of the glandular cells, as well as in the luminal secretion. Several free sugars (alpha-D-mannose, alpha-L-fucose, beta-D-galactose, beta-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine) were also detectable in the secretion of associated sebaceous glands. The ceruminous gland secretion may control viscoelasticity and/or bacterial degradation of the glandular secretion mixture to improve the protection of the external auditory canal against physical damage or microbial contamination.

Abstract
This review describes the role of pH in cutaneous structure and function. We first describe the molecules that contribute to the acidity or alkalinity of the skin. Next, differences in cutaneous pH among species, among individuals of the same species and within individuals are described. The potential functions of cutaneous pH in normal and diseased skin are analysed. For example, cutaneous pH has a role in the selection and maintenance of the normal cutaneous microbiota. In addition, cutaneous acidity may protect the skin against infection by microbes. Finally, there is evidence that a cutaneous pH gradient activates pH-dependent enzymes involved in the process of keratinization.
