Calculation of pulsed NMR signal in I = 3/2 quadrupolar spin system

Complete description of the interactions of a quadrupolar nucleus with a radiofrequency field. Implications for data fitting

We present a theory, with experimental tests, that treats exactly the effect of radiofrequency (RF) fields on quadrupolar nuclei, yet retains the symbolic expressions as much as possible. This provides a mathematical model of these interactions that can be easily connected to state-of-the-art optimization methods, so that chemically-important parameters can be extracted from fits to experimental data. Nuclei with spins >1/2 typically experience a Zeeman interaction with the (possibly anisotropic) local static field, a quadrupole interaction and are manipulated with RF fields. Since RF fields are limited by hardware, they seldom dominate the other interactions of these nuclei and so the spectra show unusual dependence on the pulse width used. The theory is tested with (23)Na NMR nutation spectra of a single crystal of sodium nitrate, in which the RF is comparable with the quadrupole coupling and is not necessarily on resonance with any of the transitions. Both the intensity and phase of all three transitions are followed as a function of flip angle. This provides a more rigorous trial than a powder sample where many of the details are averaged out. The formalism is based on a symbolic approach which encompasses all the published results, yet is easily implemented numerically, since no explicit spin operators or their commutators are needed. The classic perturbation results are also easily derived. There are no restrictions or assumptions on the spin of the nucleus or the relative sizes of the interactions, so the results are completely general, going beyond the standard first-order treatments in the literature.

Understanding multi-quantum NMR through secular approximation

With the development of technology and improved understanding of nuclear spin-spin interactions and their behavior in static/oscillating magnetic fields, NMR spectroscopy has emerged as a powerful tool for characterizing molecular structure in a wide range of systems of chemical, physical and biological relevance. Here in this article, we revisit the important connection between "Secular-Approximation" (a well-known fundamental concept) and NMR spectroscopy. Employing recent experimental results as the background, an alternate interpretation of the secular approximation is presented for describing and understanding the nuances of Multi-Quantum (MQ) NMR spectroscopy of quadrupolar nuclei. Since MQ NMR spectroscopy of quadrupolar nuclei forms the basis of the structural characterization of inorganic solids and clusters, we believe that the analytic theory presented herein would be beneficial both in the understanding and design of MQ NMR experiments. Additionally, the analytic results are corroborated with rigorous numerical simulations and could be employed in the quantitative interpretation of experimental results.

Concept of effective Hamiltonians for transitions in multi-level systems

Employing the concept of effective Hamiltonians, an analytical theory is introduced to describe transitions in a multi-level system in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Specifically, the discussion is centered towards the treatment of selective and non-selective excitations in static quadrupolar spin (I > 1/2) systems. To this end, effective radiofrequency (RF) Hamiltonians based on the spherical tensor formalism are proposed for describing transitions in both integral (I = 1, 2 and 3) and half-integral (I = 3/2, 5/2 and 7/2) quadrupolar spins. The optimum conditions desired for selective excitation in a multi-level system are derived pedagogically from first principles and presented through analytical expressions. Employing suitable model systems, the derived optimum conditions are substantiated through rigorous numerical simulations based on the spherical tensor formalism. The theory presented provides a framework for describing selective and non-selective RF pulses and could improve our understanding of multiple-pulse experiments involving quadrupolar nuclei.

Probing the validity of average Hamiltonian theory for spin I=1, 3/2 and 5/2 nuclei by analyzing a simple two-pulse sequence

In this work, we investigate the accuracy of controlling spin I=1, 3/2 and 5/2 spin systems by average Hamiltonian theory. By way of example, we consider a simple two-pulse echo sequence and compare this perturbation scheme to a numerical solution of the Von Neumann equation. For the different values of I, we examine this precision as a function of the quadrupolar coupling as well as various experimental parameters such as the pulse spacing and pulse width. Experiments and simulations on I=3/2 and I=5/2 spin systems are presented that highlight a spectral artifact introduced due to finite pulse widths as predicted by average Hamiltonian theory. The control of these spin systems by this perturbation scheme is considered by investigating a phase cycling scheme that suppresses these artifacts to zeroth-order of the Magnus expansion.
