Characterization of Frictional Properties of Single-Layer Molybdenum-Disulfide Film Based on a Coupling of Tip Radius and Tip⁻Sample Distance by Molecular-Dynamics Simulations

Lateral-force microscopy is a powerful tool to study the frictional properties of two-dimensional materials. However, few works distinctly reveal the correlation between the tip radius with the tip⁻sample distance and the frictional properties of the two-dimensional (2D) materials. We performed molecular-dynamics simulations to study the atomic-scale friction of a typical two-dimensional single-layer molybdenum disulfide (SLMoS₂). The effects of tip radius and tip⁻sample distance on the frictional properties were analyzed and discussed. The frictional force⁻sliding-distance curves show typical stick⁻slip behaviors, and the periodicity can be used to characterize the lattice constants of SLMoS₂. Sub-nanoscale stick-slip movements occur in one-lattice sliding periods along with only the armchair (AC) direction and only when the tip radius is smaller than 3 Å with 1.47 Å tip-sample distance. At the same tip⁻sample distance, a smaller tip can provide a more detailed characterization and higher-precision frictional properties of SLMoS₂. A larger tip is capable of providing comparative frictional properties of SLMoS₂ at a proper vertical tip⁻sample distance, compared with the small tip.

Influence of the electrical interface properties on the rheological behavior of sonicated soy lecithin dispersions

A significant effect, on the rheological behavior, due to the electrical properties of vesicles formed from concentrated soy lecithin dispersions have been studied in this work. The rheopectic behavior of concentrated soy lecithin dispersions (120, 150, 180, 210 and 240 g L-1) prepared by swelling-light sonication-freezing-unfreezing procedure is studied and it is specially emphasized on the transition under steady shear from lamellar phase of planar sheets to closed structures as multilamellar vesicles. Samples have been exposed to a different number of sonication cycles (from 0 to 100) and the changes in the hysteresis loop area, the apparent viscosity and the electrophoretic mobility have been studied. When the number of sonication cycles increases, the size and number of bilayers of these multilamellar vesicles decrease and therefore the total number of the vesicles and the volume fraction occupied by them show an increase.

Micelle-to-vesicle transition of an iron-chelating microbial surfactant, marinobactin E

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques have been applied to study the self-assembly processes of a microbially produced siderophore, marinobactin E (ME). ME is one of a series of marinobactins A-E that facilitate Fe(III) acquisition by the source bacterium through coordination of Fe(III) by the marinobactin headgroup. ME is a six-amino-acid peptide amphiphile appended by palmitic acid (C16), and differs only in the nature of the fatty acid moiety from the other marinobactins. Apo-ME (uncoordinated ME) assembles to form micelles with an average diameter of 4.0 nm. Upon coordination of one equivalent of Fe(III), the mean micellar diameter of Fe(III)-ME shrinks to approximately 2.8 nm. However, in the presence of excess Fe(III), Fe(III)-ME undergoes a micelle-to-vesicle transition (MVT). At a small excess of Fe(III) over Fe(III)-ME (i.e., <1.2 Fe(III)/ME), a fraction of the Fe(III)-ME micelles rearrange into approximately 200 nm diameter unilamellar vesicles. At even greater Fe(III)/ME ratios (e.g., 2-3) multilamellar aggregates begin to emerge, consistent with either multilamellar vesicles or lamellar stacks. The MVT exhibited by ME may represent a unique mechanism by which marine bacteria may detect and sequester iron required for growth.
