Porous Polymers Based on 9,10-Bis(methacryloyloxymethyl)anthracene-Towards Synthesis and Characterization

Porous materials can be found in numerous essential applications. They are of particular interest when, in addition to their porosity, they have other advantageous properties such as thermal stability or chemical diversity. The main aim of this study was to synthesize the porous copolymers of 9,10-bis(methacryloyloxymethyl)anthracene (BMA) with three different co-monomers divinylbenzene (DVB), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and trimethylpropane trimethacrylate (TRIM). They were synthesized via suspension polymerization using chlorobenzene and toluene served as porogenic solvents. For the characterization of the synthesized copolymers ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, a low-temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption method, thermogravimetry, scanning electron microscopy, inverse gas chromatography and size distribution analysis were successfully employed. It was found that depending on the used co-monomer and the type of porogen regular polymeric microspheres with a specific surface area in the range of 134-472 m²/g can be effectively synthesized. The presence of miscellaneous functional groups promotes divergent types of interactions Moreover, all of the copolymers show a good thermal stability up to 307 °C. What is important, thanks to application of anthracene derivatives as the functional monomer, the synthesized materials show fluorescence under UV radiation. The obtained microspheres can be used in various adsorption techniques as well as precursor for thermally resistant fluorescent sensors.

Alginate hydrogel beads embedded with drug-bearing polycaprolactone microspheres for sustained release of paclobutrazol

In recent years there has been a growing demand for the development of agrochemical controlled release (CR) technologies. In the present study, we aimed to create a novel agricultural CR device using two polymeric systems that have been predominantly employed in biomedical applications: beads of alginate hydrogel embedded with drug-bearing Polycaprolactone (PCL) microspheres. The combined device utilizes the advantages of each polymer type for biodegradation and controlled release of Paclobutrazol (PBZ), a common growth retardant in plants. Surface morphology of the alginate beads was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and water immersion tests were performed for stability and controlled release measurements. Bioassays were performed both in accelerated laboratory conditions and in field conditions. The results showed a capability to control the size of PBZ-loaded PCL microspheres through modification of homogenization speed and emulsifier concentration. Enlargement of PCL microsphere size had an adverse effect on release of PBZ from the alginate device. The growth of oatmeal plants as a model system was affected by the controlled release of PBZ. The preliminary field experiment observed growth retardation during two consecutive rainy seasons, with results indicating a substantial benefit of the sustained growth inhibition through the controlled release formulation. The final product has the potential to be used as a carrier for different substances in the agrochemical industry.

Encapsulation of water soluble pesticides for extended delivery of pesticides without contaminating water bodies

The main objective of this study is to develop polymeric encapsulated formulation for the water soluble broad-spectrum pesticides. Pesticides contaminate the environment in different ways but foremost hazards are linked with the contamination of water bodies. Water soluble pesticides are the major deleterious agents and go off into ground water and different water bodies through leaching or surface runoff from the applied places. Besides this some of the water soluble pesticides are broad-spectrum, but proper methods and techniques are not available for their effective and safe usage, all broad-spectrum pesticide are disappearing from the pesticide lists every year. Hence, the present study is based on development of encapsulated formulation for water soluble broad-spectrum pesticide i.e. Monocrotophos. In this study, water soluble pesticide was encapsulated in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer along with surfactants and cross linker. The developed microspheres were analyzed in HPLC for calculating loading capacity and encapsulation efficacy, these were calculated 0.75 and 90% respectively. The FT-IR data results confirmed that the monocrotophos successfully encapsulated in the PVA polymer with respective bands. The degradation studies show that in encapsulated formulation monocrotophos degradation was found only 10% after 94 hrs. Optical micrographs in aqeous solution indicate spherical shapes with size in the rage of 7-8 µm of encapsulated formulation. XRD data further crystalline nature of polymeric encapsulated formulation. The study may provide a new corridor to save the broad-spectrum water soluble pesticides which are on the verge to be banned.

An overview of inverted colloidal crystal systems for tissue engineering

Scaffolding is at the heart of tissue engineering but the number of techniques available for turning biomaterials into scaffolds displaying the features required for a tissue engineering application is somewhat limited. Inverted colloidal crystals (ICCs) are inverse replicas of an ordered array of monodisperse colloidal particles, which organize themselves in packed long-range crystals. The literature on ICC systems has grown enormously in the past 20 years, driven by the need to find organized macroporous structures. Although replicating the structure of packed colloidal crystals (CCs) into solid structures has produced a wide range of advanced materials (e.g., photonic crystals, catalysts, and membranes) only in recent years have ICCs been evaluated as devices for medical/pharmaceutical and tissue engineering applications. The geometry, size, pore density, and interconnectivity are features of the scaffold that strongly affect the cell environment with consequences on cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. ICC scaffolds are highly geometrically ordered structures with increased porosity and connectivity, which enhances oxygen and nutrient diffusion, providing optimum cellular development. In comparison to other types of scaffolds, ICCs have three major unique features: the isotropic three-dimensional environment, comprising highly uniform and size-controllable pores, and the presence of windows connecting adjacent pores. Thus far, this is the only technique that guarantees these features with a long-range order, between a few nanometers and thousands of micrometers. In this review, we present the current development status of ICC scaffolds for tissue engineering applications.
