Thin Protective Coatings on Metals Formed by Organic Corrosion Inhibitors in Neutral Media

Protection of metals in neutral media with pH 5.0–9.0 (in humid atmospheres and various aqueous solutions) can be achieved by formation of thin coatings (up to several tens of nm) on their surfaces due to adsorption and more complex chemical interactions of organic corrosion inhibitors (OCIs) with the metal to be protected. The review contains three sections. The first section deals with coatings formed in aqueous solutions, while the second one, with those formed in organic and water-organic solvents. Here we consider metal protection by coatings mainly formed by the best-known classes of OCI (carboxylates, organophosphates and phosphonates) and estimation of its efficiency. The third section discusses the peculiarities of protection of metals in the vapor-gas phase, i.e., by volatile OCIs, and a relatively new type of metal protection against atmospheric corrosion by the so-called chamber inhibitors. OCIs with relatively low volatility under normal conditions can be used as chamber OCIs. To obtain a protective coating on the surfaces of metal items, they are placed in a chamber inside which an increased concentration of vapors of a chamber OCI is maintained by increasing the temperature. This review mainly focuses on the protection of iron, steels, copper and zinc.

Dentinal tubules driven wetting of dentin: Cassie-Baxter modelling

We investigate the wetting properties of dentin surfaces submitted to a phosphoric acid etching followed by an air drying procedure, as in clinical situations of adhesive dentistry. The surface topography of the etched surfaces was characterized by AFM, and the wetting properties of water on these rough and heterogeneous surfaces were studied, by contact angle measurements. We showed that the contact angle increases with the acid exposure time and consequently with both surface roughness and the organicmineral ratio of the dentin components. From the whole results, obtained on dentin and also on synthesized hydroxyapatites samples, we inferred a water contact angle of ~133° on the dentinal tubule. These experimental results may be described by the Cassie-Baxter approach, and it is suggested that small air pockets could be formed inside the dentinal tubules.

Calorimetric study of the reactions of n-alkylphosphonic acids with metal oxide surfaces

The reaction enthalpies for the solution-phase self-assembly of n-alkylphosphonic acids on the surfaces of TiO2 and ZrO2 have been determined using isothermal titration calorimetry at 298 K. The reaction enthalpies were negative (exothermic) for methyl- and n-octylphosphonic acids and positive (endothermic) for n-octadecylphosphonic acid with both metal oxides. The enthalpy/energy analysis showed that the net enthalpy of the formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) at solid-liquid interface can be presented as follows: DeltaHr=-D-(DeltaHsol+DeltaHdil)-(ES-ESAM), where D is the binding energy of the SAM molecules with the solid; DeltaHsol and DeltaHdil are the enthalpies of dissolution and dilution; ES and ESAM are the surface energies of bare solid and SAM, respectively. This equation predicted an increase (and the sign change) of the reaction enthalpy as the alkyl group in n-alkylphosphonic acid increased, which explained the experimental data. Using this equation, the binding energy (D) in the SAMs of n-octyl- and n-octadecylphosphonic acids were estimated: 55+/-5 kJ/mol (for ZrO2) and 58+/-7 kJ/mol (for TiO2).
