Abstract
The frequency of semen collection is a crucial factor to consider in the rams performance inside breeding centers workout. To evaluate this factor, ram Breeding Soundness Evaluation could include sperm quality evaluation and new predictive and non-invasive tools such as ultrasound technique. In this work, an advanced ultrasonography technology, analyzing the testicular volume, echotexture, and vascular function, was used in three different frequencies of semen collection (abstinence frequency, AF; standard frequency, SF; and intensive frequency, IF). Semen samples were cooled (15°C, 6 h) and evaluated in terms of production, motility, viability, apoptosis, and content of reactive oxygen species. Correlation coefficients were calculated between ultrasonography measurements of echotexture and blood flow and sperm quality parameters. Our results showed an increase in the testicular echotexture when the frequency of semen collection was intensified. Doppler parameters (PSV, RI, PI, TABF) increased (P ≤ 0.05) when the frequency of semen collection was intensified. The sperm motility and functionality decreased in the samples of IF (P ≤ 0.05), evidencing the frequency of semen collection's influence. Moreover, moderate positive correlations were established among echotexture and different Doppler parameters with motility parameters in SF. Furthermore, the influence of abstinence days on AI success was analyzed in a field assay. The highest fertility rates were obtained when males had two to five abstinence days. To conclude, frequency of semen collection could be influenced in terms of semen quantity and sperm quality, showing changes in parenchyma echotexture and testicular vascularization. The standard semen collection frequency was the most adequate option. In addition, ultrasonography may be a predictive tool for estimating variations in the sperm quality of donor rams subjected to different frequencies of semen collection in reproduction centers.

Abstract
The onset of spermatogenesis during prepubertal development is accompanied by dynamic changes in testicular microstructure. Computer-assisted analysis of scrotal ultrasonograms may allow us to track these changes in a noninvasive manner; however, the echotextural characteristics of different histomorphological variables remain unclear. Hence the objective of this study was to compare echotextural and microscopic attributes of the testis over the first wave of spermatogenesis in prepubescent ram lambs. Bi-weekly ultrasound examinations and weekly testicular biopsies were carried out in 22 ram lambs from 9.5–10 weeks of age or the attainment of 15 cm3 in testicular volume, respectively, to the first detection of elongated spermatids (ESt). Testicular echogenicity was highly variable with age; however, after the alignment of data to the first detection of ESt, there was an initial increase followed by a decline, corresponding to the mitotic and postmitotic phases of spermatogenesis in prepubescent ram lambs. Testicular echotextural attributes (mean numerical pixel values and pixel heterogeneity) correlated with seminiferous tubule (ST) diameter, the number of degenerating cells/ST cross-section (XS), and the number of ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L-1 (a marker for prespermatogonia and undifferentiated spermatogonia) staining cells/ST XS during the mitotic and postmitotic phases. Additionally, in the postmitotic phase, significant correlations were recorded between the quantitative echotextural characteristics and ST cell density, nuclear:ST area and percentages of STs with different spermatogenic cells as the most mature germ cell type present. These results indicate that ram testes exhibit distinctive echotextural characteristics during the mitotic and postmitotic phases of germ cell differentiation. It is concluded that scrotal ultrasonography in conjunction with computerized image analysis holds potential as a noninvasive alternative to testicular biopsy in monitoring the reproductive status throughout different stages of testicular development.

Abstract
Caprine efferent ductule epithelium contains ciliated and nonciliated cells. The latter cells are divided into three types: type II cells contain PAS-positive granules, type III cells contain PAS-negative vacuoles, and type I cells lack both granules and vacuoles (Goyal and Williams, Anat. Rec. 220:58-67). The objectives of this study are i) to determine when the epithelium differentiates into ciliated and nonciliated cells, ii) to determine when nonciliated cells acquire characteristics typical for type II and type III cells, and iii) to relate developmental changes in the epithelium with those in the testis. Testes and efferent ductules were examined at the light and electron microscopic levels in goats from 1-25 weeks of age. Efferent ductule epithelium contained ciliated and nonciliated cells as early as week 1. While ciliated cells were differentiated at week 1, differentiation of nonciliated cells did not occur until week > or =15. Differential features in ciliated cells included the presence of cilia at the apical border and an aggregation of mitochondria in the apical cytoplasm. Those in nonciliated cells included the presence of i) an endocytotic apparatus at week > or =15, ii) PAS-positive granules at week > or =15, and iii) PAS-negative vacuoles at week > or =25. The seminiferous tubules developed lumens at 12-15 weeks. Hence, while differentiation of ciliated cells occurred much before lumen formation in the seminiferous tubules, that of nonciliated cells coincided with, or occurred soon after, lumen formation, suggesting a role for testicular fluid contents in their differentiation. The goat efferent ductules can be characterized morphologically mature by 25 weeks.

Abstract
The present study was conducted: (a) to determine the degree of seasonal variation in testis stereology in Corriedale rams between autumn and winter; (b) to test the hypothesis that testis stereology of Corriedale rams grazing native pastures during autumn and winter would differ from those of Corriedale rams grazing sown pastures and supplemented with grain during the same period; and (c) to determine whether Sertoli cell numbers differ in adult rams between the breeding season (autumn) and the following non-breeding season (winter). Twenty experimental animals were studied. Six rams (autumn control group, C-A) that had been grazing on native pasture (stocking rate = 2-3 animals ha(-1)) were castrated at the beginning of the experiment (March, early autumn). Seven rams (winter control group, C-W) continued to graze on native pasture at the same stocking rate until the end of the experiment (August, late winter). Another seven rams (treated group, T) grazed on improved pasture (stocking rate = 1-2 animals ha(-1)) and were supplemented with 1 kg grain ram(-1) day(-1) until the end of the experiment. Live weight, scrotal circumference, serum testosterone concentration and selected testicular stereological parameters were measured. The treatment did not impede the winter reduction in testicular activity and reduced its magnitude slightly (group T) compared with controls (group C-W). Sertoli cell numbers were higher in autumn (group C-A) than in winter, both on native (group C-W) and sown pastures (group T). Diminishing Sertoli cell numbers between autumn and the following winter suggest the occurrence of that Sertoli cell death during this period. The results indicate that, although the reproductive activity of Corriedale rams is moderately seasonal, a restricted change in grazing and grain supplementation can only modify it to a limited extent.

Abstract
The testis of the donkey was used as a model to study age-related changes in the period between puberty and senium. From the age of 1.5 years to the middle of sexual maturity (5 to 6 years) a number of histophysiological features, all indicative of the spermatogenetic efficiency, increase continuously. Then without a longer-lasting plateau of maximal performance these features undergo continuous retrogression. Thus, the adult testis is an organ in permanent change. During its progressive period (1.5 to 5 years) the average testicular and tubular volumes treble. The increase in tubular volume is due to an increase in tubular length (from 700 m to 1600 m per testis) and tubular diameter (from 205 microns to 250 microns). Parallel to this growth, the spermatogenetic efficiency of the seminiferous epithelium rises: the number of germ cells entering meiosis increases and the cell loss by apoptosis or exfoliation decreases. During the following regressive period of the testis (5-10 years) seminiferous epithelial height and tubular diameter are again gradually reduced to 70 microns and 205 microns, respectively. The absolute number of Sertoli cells per testis decreases continuously from puberty onwards. The tubular lamina propria thickens with advancing age and at the age of 10 years, displays long irregular projections into the seminiferous epithelium.
