Abstract
The relationship between blood selenium level and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) had been explored in previous studies. However, there are few studies about the correlation between blood selenium level and eGFR in the elderly population. This study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between blood selenium level and eGFR in the aged. The present study was a cross-sectional study and used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018 dataset. We investigated the association between blood selenium level and eGFR among participants aged 60 years or older. Totally, 4423 participants were enrolled, and the average age was 69.7 ± 6.9 years old. The means of blood selenium level and eGFR were 192.9 ± 29.5 ug/L and 74.1 ± 19.9 mL/min/1.73 m2, respectively. After adjusting potential confounders (age, gender, body mass index, ethnicity, marital status, education, family income to poverty ratio, smoking, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus), non-linear relationship was detected between blood selenium level and eGFR, whose inflection point was 202 ug/L. The effect sizes (β) and the confidence intervals on the left and right sides of inflection point were 0.07 (0.04 to 0.11) and 0.01 (- 0.02 to 0.04), respectively. In addition, subgroup analysis showed that blood selenium level was positively associated with eGFR, and the test for interactions was not statistically significant in various subgroups. In conclusion, the relationship between blood selenium level and eGFR is non-linear. Blood selenium level is positively related with eGFR when blood selenium level is less than 202 ug/L.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The growing morbidity and mortality rate of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has forced researchers to find more efficient strategies for controlling this disease. Studies have proven the important role of alteration in iron, zinc and selenium metabolism in CKD pathological process. Nanotechnology, through synthetizing nano metal-organic framework (NMOF) structures, can be employed as a valuable strategy for using these trace elements as the key for modification and improvement of CKD-related pathological events. After proving the anti-diabetic property of DIBc NMOF (which contains selenium and zinc) in the previous study, the impact of this NMOF on some important biochemical and pathological parameters of CKD was evaluated in the current study. METHODS Knowing that diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the leading cause of CKD, male wistar rats were selected and given a high fat diet for 2 weeks and then were injected with streptozotocin (35 mg/kg) to induce DN. Six weeks after streptozotocin injection, DIBc or metformin treatment started and continued for 8 weeks. RESULTS Eight weeks of DIBc treatment decreased plasma fasting blood glucose, blood urea nitrogen, uric acid, malondialdehyde (MDA) and HOMA-IR index compared to DN control and metformin groups. This NMOF significantly reduced urinary albumin excretion rate, MDA and 8-isoprostane, while it increased creatinine clearance in comparison to the above-mentioned groups. Renal histo-pathological images indicated that DIBc ameliorated glomerular basement membrane thickening and wrinkling, mesangial matrix expansion and hypercellularity and presence of intra-cytoplasmic hyaline droplets in proximal cortical tubules of kidney samples. CONCLUSION The results showed the therapeutic effect of DIBc on important biochemical and histo-pathological parameters of CKD, so this NMOF could be regarded as a promising novel anti-CKD agent.

Abstract
Confusion of various nephrotoxic Cortinarius species with edible mushrooms occurs every year throughout Europe and North America. The toxin, orellanine (OR), accumulates selectively in renal tubular epithelium with ensuing renal failure after several days as the only clinical manifestation. This study was performed to clarify the mechanisms behind the kidney damage. Sprague-Dawley rats, 100 g bw, received various doses of purified OR ip (0-5 mg/kg bw). One week later, renal function (GFR) was determined (51Cr-EDTA), ascorbyl radicals in venous blood were analyzed using electron spin resonance, and oxidative protein damage was evaluated immunohistochemically. One OR-treated group (3.5 mg/kg) simultaneously received superoxide dismutase (SOD) targeted to tubular epithelium (HC-SOD; 10 mg/kg ip daily for 5 days). RT-PCR was used for analysis of mRNA expression of genes related to oxidative stress. OR caused a dose-dependent decrease in GFR, paralleled by increased levels of ascorbyl radicals and oxidative protein damage. Antioxidant treatment with HC-SOD decreased renal function even more and also increased tissue damage and mortality. Renal mRNA levels for key components in the antioxidative defense were strongly decreased, whereas those for several cytokines were increased. The data strongly suggest that OR nephrotoxicity in vivo is mediated by oxidative stress, including a virtual shutdown of important antioxidative enzymes. We interpret the unexpected effect of HC-SOD in terms of unbalanced SOD and catalase levels in the presence of OR, leading to massive generation of *OH and cell death.

Abstract
Biogeochemical mapping of selenium in Italian agricultural soils was accomplished by measuring the Se concentration of representative samples of wheat grains from 71 provinces. The range of the concentration values averaged on a provincial basis was 7-245 ng Se g(-1). A multiple regression model based on six geochemical and pedoclimatic variables was developed to interpret the observed data and to predict Se concentration of wheat in areas where analytical data were missing and in the different Italian soil regions. The statistical model explained only part of the observed variance, but succeeded in identifying Se-enriched as well as Se-depleted areas with an acceptable level of agreement with the biogeochemical map based on measured Se in wheat. Furthermore, the model showed that within the range of concentrations measured in Italian soils, Se-bioaccessibility is controlled not only by the Se content of the soil parent rocks, but also by their overall geochemical nature (carbonatic vs. silicatic) and by pedoclimatic variables (temperature and rain intensity excursions) related to fluctuations of soil moisture and pH. Overall, several Se-marginal and Se-deficient areas were identified on the Italian territory. The implications of these findings for public health are discussed briefly.

Abstract
In patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) Se concentration in blood components is usually lower as compared with healthy controls. One of the five known forms of Se-dependent glutathione peroxidases (GSH-Px), the plasma GSH-Px, is synthesized primarily in the kidney. In CRF patients, plasma GSH-Px activity is reduced and the reduction increases with the progress of the disease. The Se concentration in blood components was measured spectrofluorometrically with 2,3-diaminonaphthalene as complexing reagent. Activities of GSH-Px in red cells and in plasma were assayed by the coupled method with t-butyl hydroperoxide as substrate. The study group consisted of 150 patients in different stages of CRF. The results were compared with the values for 30 healthy subjects. Se concentrations in whole blood and plasma of the entire group of patients were significantly lower (p < 0.01) as compared with the healthy subjects. In the incipient stage, however, the Se levels in all blood components were non-significantly lower. In whole blood and plasma the Se levels gradually decreased, reaching in the end stage values that were lower by 29 to 32% (p < 0.0001) as compared with the control group. Total protein and albumin levels in plasma of patients were significantly lower (p < 0.0001) as compared with healthy subjects and they decreased linearly with the progress of the disease. Positive and highly significant correlations were noted between total plasma protein and plasma Se concentrations (p < 0.0001) as well as between plasma albumin and plasma Se concentrations (p < 0.0001). Red cell GSH-Px activity in the entire group of patients was lower (p < 0.05) than in the control group and did not change significantly with the progress of the disease. In plasma, however, GSH-Px activity of the entire group was lower by 33% (p < 0.0001) as compared with healthy subjects and decreased gradually with increasing renal failure. Highly significant, inverse correlations were seen between creatinine levels and plasma GSH-Px activities (p < 0.0001) as well as between urea nitrogen levels and plasma GSH-Px activities (p < 0.0001) when all stages of the disease were included. In conclusion, patients with CRF exhibit lower Se levels in blood components as compared with healthy subjects. In whole blood and plasma these levels decrease with the progress of the disease. Plasma GSH-Px activity in patients was extremely reduced and it dramatically decreased with the progress of the illness.

Abstract
Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, after improved matrix modification and using Zeeman background correction, was used to measure the serum selenium content of healthy adults living in the Antwerp region (Belgium). The mean serum concentration of 13 men and 13 women, sampled once a month during 1 year, was 84.3 +/- 9.4ng/ml with a broad range of 51.4-121.7 ng/ml. The intra-individual variation was remarkably high. Recent literature on selenium concentrations is reviewed and values are tabulated, with limitation to healthy adults and European countries. The mean serum selenium concentration measured corresponded well to older literature data for Belgium. The obtained values were found to be in the medium range compared with the literature data for other European countries.

Abstract
Patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) often have reduced concentrations of selenium (Se) and lowered activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in blood components. The kidney is a major source of plasma GSH-Px. We measured Se and glutathione levels in blood components and red cell and plasma GSH-Px activities in 58 uremic patients on regular (3 times a week) hemodialysis (HD). The dialyzed patients were divided in 4 subgroups and were supplemented for 3 months with: 1) placebo (bakers yeast), 2) erythropoietin (EPO; 3 times a week with 2,000 U after each HD session), 3) Se-rich yeast (300 microg 3 times a week after each HD), and 4) Se-rich yeast plus EPO in doses as above. The results were compared with those for 25 healthy subjects. The Se concentrations and GSH-Px activities in the blood components of dialyzed uremic patients were significantly lower compared with the control group. Treatment of the HD patients with placebo and EPO only did not change the parameters studied. The treatment with Se as well as with Se and EPO caused an increase in Se levels and red cell GSH-Px activity. Plasma GSH-Px activity, however, increased only slowly or did not change after treatment with Se and with Se plus EPO. In the group treated with Se plus EPO the element concentration in blood components was higher compared with the group supplemented with Se alone. The weak or absence of response in plasma GSH-Px activity to Se supply indicates that the impaired kidney of uremic HD patients has reduced possibilities to synthesize this enzyme.

Abstract
Two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-D PAGE) is a powerful tool to separate thousands of polypeptides and to highlight the modification of protein expression in malignant diseases. By applying 2-D PAGE to ten normal human kidney and ten homologous renal cell carcinoma (RCC) tissues, we found two peptides in all ten normal tissues but not in RCCs and, conversely, two peptides were detected in all RCCs but not in normal tissues. Using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) and internal sequence analysis, the two first peptides were identified as two isoforms of plasma glutathione peroxidase (GPxP). The two other peptides isolated in all RCCs but not in normal tissues were identified by N-terminal sequence analysis as multimeric forms of manganese superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD). No multimeric Mn-SODs and only two monomeric forms were detected in normal tissues. GPxP and Mn-SOD are metallo-enzymes encoded on chromosome 5q32 and on chromosome 6p25, respectively. Their regions are within the locus 5q21-->qter and 6q21-6q27 on which deletions and translocations are described in some cytogenetic studies of RCC transformation. Therefore, our results might suggest a correlation between the modified expression of GPxP and Mn-SOD in tumor tissues and chromosomal modifications, and that the two proteins may be putative markers for diagnosis of RCC.
