Light-Patterned Current Generation in a Droplet Bilayer Array

We have created a 4 × 4 droplet bilayer array comprising light-activatable aqueous droplet bio-pixels. Aqueous droplets containing bacteriorhodopsin (bR), a light-driven proton pump, were arranged on a common hydrogel surface in lipid-containing oil. A separate lipid bilayer formed at the interface between each droplet and the hydrogel; each bilayer then incorporated bR. Electrodes in each droplet simultaneously measured the light-driven proton-pumping activities of each bio-pixel. The 4 × 4 array derived by this bottom-up synthetic biology approach can detect grey-scale images and patterns of light moving across the device, which are transduced as electrical current generated in each bio-pixel. We propose that synthetic biological light-activatable arrays, produced with soft materials, might be interfaced with living tissues to stimulate neuronal pathways.

The current state of the brain-computer interface problem

It was only 40 years ago that the first PC appeared. Over this period, rather short in historical terms, we have witnessed the revolutionary changes in lives of individuals and the entire society. Computer technologies are tightly connected with any field, either directly or indirectly. We can currently claim that computers are manifold superior to a human mind in terms of a number of parameters; however, machines lack the key feature: they are incapable of independent thinking (like a human). However, the key to successful development of humankind is collaboration between the brain and the computer rather than competition. Such collaboration when a computer broadens, supplements, or replaces some brain functions is known as the brain-computer interface. Our review focuses on real-life implementation of this collaboration.

Recent advances in the field of bionanotechnology: an insight into optoelectric bacteriorhodopsin, quantum dots, and noble metal nanoclusters

Molecular sensors and molecular electronics are a major component of a recent research area known as bionanotechnology, which merges biology with nanotechnology. This new class of biosensors and bioelectronics has been a subject of intense research over the past decade and has found application in a wide variety of fields. The unique characteristics of these biomolecular transduction systems has been utilized in applications ranging from solar cells and single-electron transistors (SETs) to fluorescent sensors capable of sensitive and selective detection of a wide variety of targets, both organic and inorganic. This review will discuss three major systems in the area of molecular sensors and electronics and their application in unique technological innovations. Firstly, the synthesis of optoelectric bacteriorhodopsin (bR) and its application in the field of molecular sensors and electronics will be discussed. Next, this article will discuss recent advances in the synthesis and application of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). Finally, this article will conclude with a review of the new and exciting field of noble metal nanoclusters and their application in the creation of a new class of fluorescent sensors.

Surface plasmon resonance immunosensor using self-assembled protein G for the detection of Salmonella paratyphi

A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based immunosensor using self-assembled protein G was developed for the detection of Salmonella paratyphi. In order to endow a solid substrate binding affinity to protein G, the free amine (-NH2) of protein G was substituted into thiol (-SH) using 2-iminothiolane. Thus, self-assembled protein G was fabricated on gold (Au) substrate. The formation of protein G layer on Au surface, and the binding of antibody and antigen in series were confirmed by SPR spectroscopy. The surface morphology analysis of the protein G layer on Au surface was performed by atomic force microscope (AFM). Consequently, an immunosensor based on SPR for the detection of S. paratyphi using self-assembled protein G was developed with a detection range of 10(2)-10(7) CFU/ml. The current fabrication technique of a SPR immunosensor for the detection of S. paratyphi could be applied to construct other immnosensors or protein chips.
