Abstract
A concise organocatalytic route toward the synthesis of furanose and pyranose substituted glycine and alanine derivatives is reported. These compounds are core structural units of some of the naturally available antibiotics and antifungal agents. Proline-catalyzed asymmetric α-amination of aldehydes derived from sugars is used as the key reaction to synthesize twelve sugar amino acid derivatives. The asymmetric transformations proceeded in good yields and with good to excellent diastereoselectivity. The application of the synthesized amino acids is demonstrated by synthesizing a tripeptide containing one of them.

Abstract
Synthesis of β-C-D-galactosyl D- and L-alanines is carried out via a highly stereoselective Grignard reaction of glycosyl iodides, Sharpless dihydroxylation and S(N)2 displacement of the corresponding mesylate or tosylate. Alternatively, attempted triflation of the intermediate alcohols triggers a stereoselective debenzylative cyclization leading to interesting bicyclic trans-fused compounds.

Abstract
Experimental diastereoselectivities for the stereocontrolled reduction of glycosyl alpha-ketoesters into the corresponding alpha-hydroxyesters have recently been reported with unexpected results. The process is catalyzed by a chiral oxazaborolidine derivative (the so-called CBS catalyst) and represents the key step in the synthesis of glycosyl alpha-amino acids synthons, a class of compounds that allow preparation of natural glycopeptides analogues exhibiting potential therapeutic relevance. Good to very good diastereomeric excesses have been obtained for a series of reactions with different glucidic derivatives, but surprisingly, the major product obtained does not correspond to that predicted by using Corey's model. In the present work, we carry out a theoretical investigation of these reactions at the density functional level. Separated effects from the catalyst and from the glucidic derivative have been computed to rationalize the observed diastereoselectivities and the double asymmetric induction.

Abstract
(5'R)-5'-Isobutyl-5'-[methyl (4R)-2,3-O-isopropylidene-beta-L-erythrofuranosid-4-C-yl]-imidazolidin-2',4'-dione was synthesised starting from methyl 2,3-O-isopropylidene-alpha-D-lyxo-pentodialdo-1,4-furanoside via methyl 6-deoxy-6-isopropyl-2,3-O-isopropylidene-alpha-D-lyxo-hexofuranosid-5-ulose applying the Bucherer-Bergs reaction. Its 5'-R configuration was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Corresponding alpha-amino acid-methyl (5R)-5-amino-5-C-carboxy-5,6-dideoxy-6-isopropyl-alpha-D-lyxo-hexofuranoside (alternative name: 2-[methyl (4R)-beta-L-erythrofuranosid-4-C-yl]-D-leucine) was obtained from the above hydantoin by acid hydrolysis of the isopropylidene group followed by basic hydrolysis of the hydantoin ring. Analogous derivatives with 5S configuration, formed in a minority, were also isolated and characterised.

Abstract
The S- and C-glycosylated nonapeptides 1 and 2 were synthesized as analogs of the non-glycosylated LH-RH agonist buserelin (pGlu-His-Trp-Ser-Tyr-D-Ser(tBu)-Leu-Arg-Pro-NHEt) by segment condensation in solution. 1 and 2 differ from this peptide in the amino acid in position 6. In the first case (1), D-serine (tBu) is substituted by D-cysteine carrying a rhamnosyl residue, in the second case (2) D-alanine carrying a galactosyl moiety bound as C-glycoside is incorporated. The bioactivity of both glycopeptides as fertility drugs was determined from the dose dependent LH release in male rats. Additionally, in female rats the ovulation rate was assessed. As a result the analog 1 exhibits a similar biological activity as buserelin while analog 2 shows about 25% of this potency. Compared to buserelin the solubility of the analogs 1 and 2 in aqueous buffer is improved by more than two orders of magnitude due to the carbohydrate moieties.
