Abstract
The catalytic enantioselective Michael addition of α,β-unsaturated ketones with malononitrile was well established using rare-earth metal amides RE[N(SiMe3)2]3 (RE = Y, Eu, Sm, Nd, La) with chiral phenoxy-functionalized TsDPEN ligands. The combination of lanthanum amide La[N(SiMe3)2]3 and chiral TsDPEN ligand H3L1 [H3L1 = N-((1R,2R)-2-((3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)amino)-1,2-diphenylethyl)-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide] in a 1:1.5 molar ratio was proved to be the optimal partner in THF, which provided the desired β-carbonyl dinitriles in excellent yields and good to high enantioselectivities after 12 h at -15 °C.

Abstract
The trans-chelating bis(oxazoline) ligand (R,R)-4,6-dibenzofurandiyl-2,2'-bis(4-phenyloxazoline) [(R,R)-DBFOX/Ph] coordinates metal ions to give C2-symmetric complexes which effectively catalyze a variety of asymmetric reactions. (R,R)-DBFOX/Ph·Ni(ClO4)2·3H2O, whose crystal structure is octahedral with three aqua ligands, can be stored under air for several months without loss of catalytic activity and promotes highly enantioselective reactions even in the presence of excess amounts of water, alcohols, amines, and acids. The complex shows remarkable chiral amplification in asymmetric Diels-Alder (DA) reactions. This review focuses on enantioselective reactions catalyzed by (R,R)-DBFOX/Ph·metal complexes.

Abstract
A highly enantioselective (91- > 99% ee) Michael addition of α-nitroacetate to α,β-unsaturated pyrazolamide was developed in the presence of a bifunctional squaramide. Satisfactory isolated yields (42%-99%) have been achieved with a wide range of α,β-unsaturated pyrazolamides, albeit acceptor of this type displayed poor reactivity in the precedent reports. The adducts resulting from this protocol are useful synthetic intermediates for further synthetic modification.

Abstract
The metal-catalyzed asymmetric conjugate addition (ACA) reaction has emerged as a general and powerful approach for the construction of optically active compounds and is among the most significant and useful reactions in synthetic organic chemistry. In recent years, great progress has been made in this area with the use of various chiral metal complexes based on different chiral ligands. This review provides comprehensive and critical information on the enantioselective 1,4-conjugate addition of nonorganometallic (soft) nucleophiles and their importance in synthetic applications. The literature is covered from the last 10 years, and a number of examples from before 2007 are included as background information. The review is divided into multiple parts according to the type of nucleophile involved in the reaction (such as C-, B-, O-, N-, S-, P-, and Si-centered nucleophiles) and metal catalyst systems used.

Abstract
The concept of green chemistry began in the USA in the 1990s. Since the publication of the 12 principles of this concept, many reactions in organic chemistry have been developed, and chemical products have been synthesized under environmentally friendly conditions. Lewis acid mediated synthetic transformations are by far the most numerous and best studied. However, the use of certain Lewis acids may cause risks to environmental and human health. This Review discusses the evolution of Lewis acid catalyzed reactions from a homogeneous liquid phase to the solid phase to yield the expected organic molecules under green, safe conditions. In particular, recent developments and applications of biosourced catalysts from plants are highlighted.

Abstract
Octahedral iridium(III) complexes containing two bidentate cyclometalating 5-tert-butyl-2-phenylbenzoxazole (IrO) or 5-tert-butyl-2-phenylbenzothiazole (IrS) ligands in addition to two labile acetonitrile ligands are demonstrated to constitute a highly versatile class of asymmetric Lewis acid catalysts. These complexes feature the metal center as the exclusive source of chirality and serve as effective asymmetric catalysts (0.5-5.0 mol % catalyst loading) for a variety of reactions with α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, namely Friedel-Crafts alkylations (94-99% ee), Michael additions with CH-acidic compounds (81-97% ee), and a variety of cycloadditions (92-99% ee with high d.r.). Mechanistic investigations and crystal structures of an iridium-coordinated substrates and iridium-coordinated products are consistent with a mechanistic picture in which the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds are activated by two-point binding (bidentate coordination) to the chiral Lewis acid.

Abstract
The first examples of a tandem Nazarov cyclization/Michael addition process are described. The sequence is efficiently catalyzed by Ir[Me(CO)(dppe)(DIB)]2+ and occurs with high diastereoselectivity, creating three contiguous stereocenters. The mechanistic factors controlling the reactivity and diastereoselectivity are discussed.

Abstract
Readily prepared Ni(II)-bis[(R,R)-N,N'-dibenzylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine]Br(2) was shown to catalyze the Michael addition of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds to nitroalkenes at room temperature in good yields with high enantioselectivities. The two diamine ligands in this system each play a distinct role: one serves as a chiral ligand to provide stereoinduction in the addition step while the other functions as a base for substrate enolization. Ligand modification within the catalyst was also investigated to facilitate the reaction of aliphatic nitroalkenes, 1,3-diketones, and beta-ketoacids. Ni(II)-bis[(R,R)-N,N'-di-p-bromo-benzylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine]Br(2) was found to be an effective catalyst in these instances. Furthermore, monodiamine complex, Ni(II)-[(R,R)-N,N'-dibenzylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine]Br(2), catalyzed the addition reaction in the presence of water. The proposed model for stereochemical induction is shown to be consistent with X-ray structure analysis.

Abstract
A thiourea-catalyzed asymmetric Michael addition of activated methylene compounds to alpha,beta-unsaturated imides derived from 2-pyrrolidinone and 2-methoxybenzamide has been developed. In the case of 2-pyrrolidinone derivatives, the reaction with malononitrile proceeded in toluene with high enantioselectivity, providing the Michael adducts in good yields. However, the nucleophiles that could be used for this reaction were limited to malononitrile due to poor reactivity of the substrate. Further examination revealed that N-alkenoyl-2-methoxybenzamide was the best substrate among the corresponding benzamide derivatives bearing different substituents on the aromatic ring. Indeed, several activated methylene compounds such as malononitrile, methyl alpha-cyanoacetate, and nitromethane could be employed as a nucleophile to give the Michael adducts in good to excellent yields with up to 93% ee. The results of spectroscopic experiments clarified that this enhanced reactivity can be attributed to the intramolecular hydrogen-bonding interaction between the N-H of the imide and the methoxy group of the benzamide moiety. Thus, the key to the success of the catalytic enantioselective Michael addition is dual activation of the substrate by both intramolecular hydrogen bonding in the imide and intermolecular hydrogen bonding with thiourea 1a, as well as the activation of a nucleophile by the tertiary amine of the bifunctional thiourea.

Abstract
The enantioselective addition of beta-ketoesters to unsaturated N-acylthiazolidinethiones catalyzed by Ni(II) Tol-BINAP Lewis acid complexes is reported. Notable features of this reaction are its operation simplicity, the obviated need for the addition of an external base, and the ease with which the adducts are converted into a range of potentially useful derivatives. In particular, the dihydropyrone adducts are versatile scaffolds for further stereoselective elaboration.

Abstract
Femtosecond fluorescence upconversion and transient absorption experiments have been performed to monitor the photoinduced electronic, geometry, and solvent relaxation dynamics of 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene dissolved in methylcyclohexane or n-hexane, n-dodecane, dichloromethane, and acetonitrile. The data have been analyzed by using a sequential global analysis method that gives rise to species associated difference spectra. The spectral features in these spectra and their dynamic behavior enable us to associate them with specific processes occurring in the molecule. The experiments show that the internal charge-transfer lpi* state is populated after internal conversion from the 1La state. In the lpi state the molecule is concluded to be subject to a large-amplitude motion, thereby confirming our previous predictions that internal charge transfer in this state is accompanied by the formation of a two-center three-electron bond between the two nitrogen atoms. Solvent relaxation and vibrational cooling in the lpi* state cannot be separated in polar solvents, but in apolar solvents a distinct vibrational cooling process in the lpi* state is discerned. The spectral and dynamic characteristics of the final species created in the experiments are shown to correspond well with what has been determined before for the relaxed emissive lpi state.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] The reaction of dimedone with 1-(2-alkenoyl)-4-bromo-3,5-dimethylpyrazoles in THF, catalyzed by catalytic amounts of both DBFOX/Ph-nickel(II) perchlorate trihydrate and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine, in the presence of acetic anhydride in THF produces the corresponding enol lactones in high enantioselectivities through enantioselective Michael additions followed by cyclization with removal of the pyrazole auxiliary. Other related nucleophile precursors can be successfully applied in the enantioselective enol lactone synthesis under the double catalytic conditions.

Abstract
Cu(SbF6)2-AdamBox and copper(II) bis-(5-tert-butylsalicylaldehydate) catalyze the Michael addition in neutral media. Mechanistic studies, based on UV-vis, IR, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), suggest that copper enolates of the beta-dicarbonyl formed in situ are the active nucleophilic species.
