The role of salicylic acid in systemic acquired resistance

Development of a novel fungicide, tolprocarb

Tolprocarb developed by Mitsui Chemicals Agro, Inc. (Tokyo, Japan) was discovered as a new oomycete fungicide. However, its antifungal spectrum and action mechanisms against fungi are completely different from those of the original compound, iprovalicarb. Tolprocarb has a potent and highly controlled effect on a rice blast fungus Magnaporthe grisea, and its mode of action was revealed to be the inhibition of polyketide synthase in the melanin biosynthesis pathway. In addition, tolprocarb induced systemic acquired resistance in Arabidopsis thaliana and rice (Oryza sativa L.). Owing to these double modes of action, tolprocarb can effectively control not only rice blast but also bacterial diseases, and has a low risk of developing fungicide-resistant isolates. Tolprocarb also provides long-term residual activity. A meta-analysis was performed in order to demonstrate tolprocarb's superior control against panicle blast in paddy fields. In addition, tolprocarb did not show cross-resistance against the fungi that are resistant to dehydratase inhibitor in melanin biosynthesis (Melanin Biosynthesis Inhibitor-Dehydratase; MBI-D) or respiratory complex III: cytochrome bc ₁ at Quinone outside site inhibitor (Quinone outside Inhibitor; QoI). Owing to its stable effects, tolprocarb appears to be a suitable choice for practical use against fungi in the rice production field.

UV-B Exposure of Black Carrot (Daucus carota ssp. sativus var. atrorubens) Plants Promotes Growth, Accumulation of Anthocyanin, and Phenolic Compounds

Black carrot (Daucus carota L. ssp. sativus var. atroburens) is a root vegetable with anthocyanins as major phenolic compounds. The accumulation of phenolic compounds is a common response to UV-B exposure, acting as protective compounds and as antioxidants. In the present study, black carrot plants grown under a 12-h photoperiod were supplemented with UV-B radiation (21.6 kj m−2 day−1) during the last two weeks of growth. Carrot taproots and tops were harvested separately, and the effect of the UV-B irradiance was evaluated in terms of size (biomass and length), total monomeric anthocyanin content (TMC), total phenolic content (TPC), and phytohormones levels. The results showed that UV-B irradiance promoted plant growth, as shown by the elevated root (30%) and top (24%) biomass, the increased TMC and TPC in the root (over 10%), and the increased TPC of the top (9%). A hormone analysis revealed that, in response to UV-B irradiance, the levels of abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonic acid (JA), and salicylic acid (SA) decreased in tops while the level of the cytokinins cis-zeatin (cZ) and trans-zeatinriboside (tZR) increased in roots, which correlated with an amplified growth and the accumulation of anthocyanins and phenolic compounds. Beyond the practical implications that this work may have, it contributes to the understanding of UV-B responses in black carrot.

Evidence against specific binding of salicylic acid to plant catalase

It was demonstrated that salicylic acid (SA) not only binds to catalase from differentiated higher plants and plant cell suspension cultures but also to those of fungi and animals. SA bound specifically to iron-containing enzymes, such as catalase, aconitase, lipoxidase and peroxidase, while not to iron-free plant enzymes. On the grounds of these experiments, the claim is further challenged that SA is a signalling compound and second messenger in plants that activates plant defense-related genes through elevated H2O2 levels by specifically inhibiting catalase activity. SA may just function as a phytoalexin.

1994 E.W.R. Steacie Award Lecture Application of natural products chemistry to a biological problem

Aspen that bear a certain type of black gall have a lower incidence of heartwood rot (caused by the fungus Phellinustremulae) than do nearby non-gall trees. Efforts to determine the chemical nature of this black gall effect are described. The metabolites of some fungi associated with the black gall (Phomaetheridgei, Stachybotryscylindrospora), and of the rotting fungus Phellinustremulae, are described. Extracts of the black gall tissue have a very high concentration of benzoic acid and it is suggested that the benzoic acid may play a role in the protection of the galled trees.
