Abstract
Aiming at confirming the chemical structure, herein, we report the crystal structure of Arbortristoside-A, isolated from the seeds of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis Linn. and investigated by single crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis. The unambiguously established structure of Arbortristoside-A not only addresses previously reported structural flaws but also encourages its chemical, computational, and physiological studies as a lead drug candidate of pharmaceutical significance.

Abstract
We examined anti-amnesic activity of the methanolic extract of Cornus officinalis fruits (COT) and a major constituent, loganin using scopolamine-induced (1 mg/kg body weight, s.c.) amnesic mice with both passive avoidance and the Morris water maze tests. Oral treatment of mice with COT (100 mg/kg body weight) and loganin (1 and 2 mg/kg body weight) significantly mitigated scopolamine-induced memory deficits in passive avoidance test. In the Morris water maze test, oral treatment of loganin significantly ameliorated scopolamine-induced memory deficits showing the formation of long-term and/or short-term spatial memory. Moreover, loganin (2 mg/kg body weight) significantly inhibited acetylcholinesterase activity by as much as 45% of control in the mouse hippocampus. These results indicate that loganin may exert antiamnesic activity in in vivo through acetylcholinesterase inhibition.

Abstract
A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with diode array detector (DAD) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) was established for the simultaneous determination of thirteen bioactive compounds in Flos Lonicerae. The optimal chromatographic conditions were obtained on a C(18) column (250x4.6 mm, 5.0 microm) with the column temperature at 30 degrees C. The mobile phase was composed of (A) acetic acid aqueous (0.4%, v/v) and (B) acetonitrile using a gradient elution, the flow rate was 1 ml/min. Detection wavelengths were set at 240 nm for iridoids (loganin, sweroside, secoxyloganin and centauroside), 330 nm for phenolic acids (chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, 4,5-di-O-caffeoyl quinic acid and 3,4-di-O-caffeoyl quinic acid) and 360 nm for flavonoids (rutin, hyperoside, quercetin-3-O-glucoside, luteolin-7-O-glucoside and lonicerin). The identities of the peaks were accomplished by comparing retention times, UV and mass data with reference compounds under the same conditions. All calibration curves showed good linear regression (r(2)>0.9983) within test ranges. The developed method provided satisfactory precision and accuracy with overall intra-day and inter-day variations of 0.78--1.85% and 1.13--2.36%, respectively, and the overall recoveries of 91.3--104.2% for the thirteen compounds analyzed. The verified method was successfully applied to quantitative determination of the three types of bioactive compounds in ten commercial Flos Lonicerae samples from different markets in China. The analytical results demonstrated that the contents of the thirteen analytes were relatively variant.

Abstract
Infusions of Verbascumlasianthum flowers have been used for hemorrhoids in Turkish folk medicine. In order to evaluate the scientific basis for this practice, in vivo anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities of Verbascum lasianthum Boiss. ex Bentham flowers were investigated. A methanolic extract of the flowers was shown to possess significant inhibitory activity in the carrageenan-induced hind paw edema model and in p-benzoquinone-induced writhings in mice. Through bioassay-guided fractionation and isolation procedures eight compounds, 6-O-(4'''-O-trans-p-coumaroyl)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosylaucubin (1), 6-O-(4'''-O-trans-p-methoxycinnamoyl)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosylaucubin (2), sinuatol (3), aucubin (4), geniposidic acid (5), catalpol (6), ajugol (7) and ilwensisaponin A (8) were isolated and their structures were elucidated by spectral techniques. An iridoid glucoside, aucubin (4) and a triterpenoid saponin, ilwensisaponin A (8) were found to possess significant antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities, per os without inducing any apparent acute toxicity or gastric damage. Results of the present study support the continued and expanded utilization of plants employed in Turkish folk medicine.

Abstract
This study presents a new HPLC method for the simultaneous determination of seven major components, namely chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, loganin, sweroside, secoxyloganin, rutin and luteolin 7-O-glucoside in Caulis Lonicerae Japonicae, a commonly used traditional Chinese medicinal herb derived from the caulis of Lonicera japonica Thunb. These seven compounds, belonging to the chemical types of phenolic acids, iridoids and flavonoids, were separated on a C18 column (250 x 4.6 mm, 5.0 microm) with the column temperature at 30 degrees C. The mobile phase was composed of (A) aqueous acetic acid (0.4%, v/v) and (B) acetonitrile using a gradient elution of 10% B at 0-12 min, 10-17% B at 12-25 min and 17% B at 25-35 min. The flow rate was 1.0 mL/min and detection wavelength was set at 245 nm. The limit of detection (S/N = 3) ranged from 0.10 to 0.23 microg/mL and the limit of quantification (S/N = 10) ranged from 0.69 to 3.56 microg/mL. All calibration curves showed good linear regression (r2 > 0.9990) within the test ranges. The intra- and inter-day precisions as determined from sample solutions were below 1.24 and 2.28%, respectively. The recoveries for seven compounds were found to range from 94.2 to 103.6%. This verified method has been successfully applied to evaluation of commercial samples of Caulis Lonicerae Japonicae from different markets in China.

Abstract
A rapid, sensitive and selective high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed and validated for determination of loganin in rat tissues. Samples were prepared based on a simple protein precipitation. Separation of loganin was achieved on a reversed-phase C(18) column (250 x 4.6 mm, 5 microm) with a mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile and water (16:84, v/v) at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. The detection wavelength was set at 236 nm and the temperature of the column was kept at 30 degrees C. The method was applied to study tissue distribution of loganin in rats after a single administration of loganin at a dose of 20 mg/kg. The highest level was observed in kidney, then in stomach, lung and small intestine. The lowest level was found in brain. The peak levels were attained at 90 min in most tissues. It was indicated that kidney was the major distribution tissue of loganin in rats, and that loganin had difficulty in crossing the blood-brain barrier. It was also found there was no long-term accumulation of loganin in rat tissues.

Abstract
Extracts obtained from the herbs of various Veronica species are used as folk remedy worldwide for the treatment of various inflammatory ailments including rheumatism. In vivo anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities of Veronica anagallis-aquatica L. aerial parts were investigated. Methanolic extract of the plant was shown to possess significant inhibitory activity against carrageenan-induced hind paw edema model and of p-benzoquinone-induced writhings in mice. Through bioassay-guided fractionation and isolation procedures eight compounds, aquaticoside A (1), aquaticoside B (2), aquaticoside C (3), veronicoside (4), catalposide (5), verproside (6), verminoside (7) and martynoside (8) were isolated and their structures were elucidated by spectral techniques. Catapol derivative iridoid glucosides, verproside (6) and catalposide (5), were found to possess potent antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities, per os without inducing any apparent acute toxicity as well as gastric damage. Results of the present study supported the utilization of the plant in Turkish folk medicine.

Abstract
Structural modifications in iridoid glycosides and evaluation of their efficacy on adhering capability (in vitro) of immature hamster uterine epithelial cells to the substratum have been studied. Out of 31, eight compounds in vitro, five compounds in utero and two in vivo showed adhesion/implantation preventing activity, respectively. The results provide an indication for further exploration in the line of development of anti-adhesive agents.
