Indoor 222Rn measurements using an activated charcoal detector

Invited article: radon and thoron intercomparison experiments for integrated monitors at NIRS, Japan

Inhalation of radon ((222)Rn) and its short-lived decay products and of products of the thoron ((220)Rn) series accounts for more than half of the effective dose from natural radiation sources. At this time, many countries have begun large-scale radon and thoron surveys and many different measurement methods and instruments are used in these studies. Consequently, it is necessary to improve and standardize technical methods of measurements and to verify quality assurance by intercomparisons between laboratories. Four international intercomparisons for passive integrating radon and thoron monitors were conducted at the NIRS (National Institute of Radiological Sciences, Japan). Radon exercises were carried out in the 24.4 m(3) inner volume walk-in radon chamber that has systems to control radon concentration, temperature, and humidity. Moreover, the NIRS thoron chamber with a 150 dm(3) inner volume was utilized to provide three thoron intercomparisons. At present, the NIRS is the only laboratory world-wide that has carried out periodic thoron intercomparison of passive monitors. Fifty laboratories from 26 countries participated in the radon intercomparison, using six types of detectors (charcoal, CR-39, LR 115, polycarbonate film, electret plate, and silicon photodiode). Eighteen laboratories from 12 countries participated in the thoron intercomparisons, using two etch-track types (CR-39 and polycarbonate) detectors. The tests were made under one to three different exposures to radon and thoron. The data presented in this paper indicated that the performance quality of laboratories for radon measurement has been gradually increasing. Results of thoron exercises showed that the quality for thoron measurements still needs further development and additional studies are needed to improve its measuring methods. The present paper provides a summary of all radon and thoron international intercomparisons done at NIRS from 2007 to date and it describes the present status on radon and thoron passive, one-time cycle monitors.

Temperature calibration formula for activated charcoal radon collectors

Radon adsorption by activated charcoal collectors such as PicoRad radon detectors is known to be largely affected by temperature and relative humidity. Quantitative models are, however, still needed for accurate radon estimation in a variable environment. Here we introduce a temperature calibration formula based on the gas adsorption theory to evaluate the radon concentration in air from the average temperature, collection time, and liquid scintillation count rate. On the basis of calibration experiments done by using the 25 m³ radon chamber available at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences in Japan, we found that the radon adsorption efficiency may vary up to a factor of two for temperatures typical of indoor conditions. We expect our results to be useful for establishing standardized protocols for optimized radon assessment in dwellings and workplaces.

Indoor radon in Kuwait

Indoor radon measurements were carried out in 300 dwellings in Kuwait using duplicate sets of charcoal detectors. Measurements were made at three different locations in the dwellings: living rooms, bedrooms, and basements. The results show that the radon concentration in the dwellings of Kuwait was found to vary in the range of 4.0-241.8 Bq m(-3) with a mean value of 32.8 Bq m(-3), and most values are confined within the range of 10-50 Bq m(-3) for all locations with few cases above the value of 100 Bq m(-3). Overall results show that the indoor radon concentration levels in Kuwait are relatively low, which is attributed to the use of air conditioning in summer and possible natural ventilation in winter. The radon concentration in basements was found to be relatively higher when compared to other rooms of the dwellings.

Towards the use of small amounts of activated charcoal along with well-type NaI(Tl) detector for indoor radon measurements

The feasibility of using small quantities of activated charcoal and a 7.6 cm x 7.6 cm NaI(Tl) well-type detector was investigated for indoor radon measurements. Vials, filled with 10 g of charcoal, were exposed for different indoor radon concentration levels typical of Kuwait dwellings. After exposure, the vials were sealed and kept for 3 h to allow radon to come into radioactive equilibrium with its progenies and were then analysed by gamma-ray spectrometry using the well-type NaI(Tl) detector. The variation of radon absorption by the vials filled with charcoal with exposure time was also studied. A comparative study of the present technique with the standard technique of using 70 g charcoal canisters and flat NaI detector was also performed. After establishing the suitability of the technique, the charcoal vials were then used to investigate the effect of air-ventilation on the concentration levels of the indoor radon. Results show that there is a reduction in the radon concentration level (up to 25%) when the air-ventilation system was switched on. The paper presents the results of the study on the feasibility of combining small amounts of activated charcoal with a well-type NaI(Tl) detector in the measurement of indoor radon concentrations.

Application of activated charcoal radon collectors in high humidity environments

Most commercially based activated charcoal radon collectors were designed for use in indoor environments. However, at present, they are often used for research in radon surveys in unique environments, such as in the bathrooms, underground areas, mines, caves and tunnels. In these environments, the relative humidity would be around 100%, and a change in the sensitivity of cpm(Bq m(-3))(-1)(radon) would occur. For this study, the reduction in the sensitivity of activated charcoal radon collector due to environmental humidity was investigated, and the data correction was discussed. Here, ST-100 (Pico-Rad) was selected as an example of a familiar activated charcoal radon collector. According to our performance test, the humidity of 90% (20 degrees C) resulted in a 15% reduction of the sensitivity for 24 h collection. The ST-100 user should discuss the necessity of data correction by comparing the change of sensitivity with other levels of estimation errors.

Development of Theme in Radiochemistry

The disintegration rates of 222Rn and its daughters in natural water were determined successfully by the use of the integral counting method with a liquid scintillation spectrometer. A significant advantage of this method is its freedom from the quenching effect. Moreover, when plural alpha-, and beta-emitters are present, their total amounts can be determined. The simple extrapolation of integral counting curve to zero pulse-height, however, do not give the true disintegration rate for the soft beta-emitters (Emax < 200 keV), because the liquid scintillator (LS) has a relatively high detection threshold. Therefore, the zero detection threshold of the liquid scintillation spectrometer was determined by measuring standard 3H samples, and a modified integral counting method which extrapolates the integral counting curve to the zero detection threshold was proposed. The method has been successfully applied to various beta-emitters, 222Rn samples, and coloured samples of beta-emitters, giving more accurate absolute disintegration rate than the conventional integral counting method and the efficiency tracing method. In the course of the study determining 222Rn by liquid scintillation counting, we observed unexpected phenomena; the air luminescence from gaseous space above LS, and the temperature dependence of pulse-height spectra. As for the former phenomenon, we proposed a method for correcting errors due to air luminescence, a method for determining alpha-emitters by the air luminescence, and a rapid calibration method for 222Rn detectors. As for the latter phenomenon, we observed that the pulse-height spectra for alpha, and beta-emitters in LS are shifted toward higher pulse-height with decreasing temperature. We found that the fluorescence intensities of the solvent of LS (toluene) is promoted at lower temperatures, and that not only toluene, but also the fluorescence intensity of a number of aromatic hydrocarbons and aliphatic hydrocarbons show the same effect as toluene. Other unexpected results are existence of metals in number of enzymes, and discrepancies between the experimental value for Kurie plot of allowed beta-emitters and the value which would be expected according to Fermi's theory, the results of which would affect the transmission probability of potential barrier for alpha-particles.
