Pretreatments of lignocellulosic and algal biomasses for sustainable biohydrogen production: Recent progress, carbon neutrality, and circular economy

Lignocellulosic and algal biomasses are known to be vital feedstocks to establish a green hydrogen supply chain toward achieving a carbon-neutral society. However, one of the most pressing issues to be addressed is the low digestibility of these biomasses in biorefinery processes, such as dark fermentation, to produce green hydrogen. To date, various pretreatment approaches, such as physical, chemical, and biological methods, have been examined to enhance feedstock digestibility. However, neither systematic reviews of pretreatment to promote biohydrogen production in dark fermentation nor economic feasibility analyses have been conducted. Thus, this study offers a comprehensive review of current biomass pretreatment methods to promote biohydrogen production in dark fermentation. In addition, this review has provided comparative analyses of the technological and economic feasibility of existing pretreatment techniques and discussed the prospects of the pretreatments from the standpoint of carbon neutrality and circular economy.

Rapid hydrogen generation from cotton wastes by mean of dark fermentation

Dark fermentation of textile wastes is discussed in the paper. In the experiment cotton wastes were fermented. Before fermentation the cotton was hydrolyzed using 0.1 M HCl acidic solution. The inoculum was pretreated by means of heat shock for 0.5 h at 105 °C. The fermentation was carried out under mesophilic conditions at a load of 5 g VSS/L, and pH 5. Oxygen was added in small quantities during fermentation. The oxygen flow rates (OFR) were between 0.3 and 1.0 mL/h. The fermentation was carried out for a few days at temperatures between 40 and 43 °C. Hydrogenesis prevailed at the lower temperature (40 °C) and methanogenesis at the higher (43 °C). Conversion of cotton waste to methane (3.4%) was slightly higher than conversion to hydrogen (2.6%). The highest hydrogen production was obtained for OFR 0.8 mL/h and the percentage of hydrogen in biogas was 43%. At higher temperatures (43 °C) no hydrogen production was observed

Pretreatment of macroalgal Laminaria japonica by combined microwave-acid method for biohydrogen production

Suitable pretreatment can effectively enhance the fermentative hydrogen production from algae biomass. In this study, combined microwave-acid pretreatment was applied to disintegrate the biomass of macroalgae L. japonica, and dark fermentation in batch mode was conducted for hydrogen production. The results showed that combining microwave pretreatment at 140 °C and 2450 MHz with 1% H2SO4 for 15 min could effectively disrupt macroalgal cells and release the organic matters, and soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) concentration increased by 1.92-fold and achieved 5.12 g/L. During the fermentation process, both polysaccharides and proteins were consumed. Hydrogen production process was dominated by acetate-type fermentation, and the dominance of genus Clostridium contributed to more efficient hydrogen production. After the pretreatment, hydrogen yield increased from 15 mL/g TSadded to 28 mL/g TSadded, and energy conversion efficiency increased from 9.5% to 23.8%. Combined microwave-acid pretreatment is potential in enhancing hydrogen production from the biomass of L. japonica.

Fermentative hydrogen production using pretreated microalgal biomass as feedstock

Microalgae are simple chlorophyll containing organisms, they have high photosynthetic efficiency and can synthesize and accumulate large quantities of carbohydrate biomass. They can be cultivated in fresh water, seawater and wastewater. They have been used as feedstock for producing biodiesel, bioethanol and biogas. The production of these biofuels can be integrated with CO2 mitigation, wastewater treatment, and the production of high-value chemicals. Biohydrogen from microalgae is renewable. Microalgae have several advantages compared to terrestrial plants, such as higher growth rate with superior CO2 fixation capacity; they do not need arable land to grow; they do not contain lignin. In this review, the biology of microalgae and the chemical composition of microalgae were briefly introduced, the advantages and disadvantages of hydrogen production from microalgae were discussed, and the pretreatment of microalgal biomass and the fermentative hydrogen production from microalgal biomass pretreated by different methods (including physical, chemical, biological and combined methods) were summarized and evaluated. For the production of biohydrogen from microalgae, the economic feasibility remains the most important aspect to consider. Several technological and economic issues must be addressed to achieve success on a commercial scale.
