Long-lived triplet charge-separated state in naphthalenediimide based donor-acceptor systems

1,4,5,8-Naphthalenediimides (NDIs) are widely used motifs to design multichromophoric architectures due to their ease of functionalisation, their high oxidative power and the stability of their radical anion. The NDI building block can be incorporated in supramolecular systems by either core or imide functionalization. We report on the charge-transfer dynamics of a series of electron donor-acceptor dyads consisting of a NDI chromophore with one or two donors linked at the axial, imide position. Photo-population of the core-centred π-π* state is followed by ultrafast electron transfer from the electron donor to the NDI. Due to a solvent dependent singlet-triplet equilibrium inherent to the NDI core, both singlet and triplet charge-separated states are populated. We demonstrate that long-lived charge separation in the triplet state can be achieved by controlling the mutual orientation of the donor-acceptor sub-units. By extending this study to a supramolecular NDI-based cage, we also show that the triplet charge-separation yield can be increased by tuning the environment.

Mito-targeted "turn-on" fluorescent probe for nickel (II) detection

In this paper, we unveil a new highly selective and sensitive mito-tracker (NiP) for Ni²⁺ detection. NiP itself held very weak fluorescence and exhibited a high selectivity (≥160-fold) toward Ni²⁺ over other metal ions, with a limit of detection of 21.6 nmol. We demonstrate the practicality of NiP for the rapid determination of Ni²⁺ levels in mitochondria of living cells. This approach offers advantages by being fast, simple and low cost.

Ultrafast Relaxation Dynamics of the Excited States of Michler's Thione

Ultrafast relaxation dynamics of the S2 and S1 states of 4,4'-bis(N,N-dimethylamino)thiobenzophenone (Michler's thione, MT) have been investigated in different kinds of solvents, using steady-state absorption and emission as well as femtosecond transient absorption and fluorescence up-conversion spectroscopic techniques. Steady-state fluorescence measurements, following photoexcitation to the S2 state of MT, reveal weak fluorescence from the S2 state (phi F approximately 10(-3) in nonpolar and 10(-4) in polar solvents) but much weaker fluorescence from the S1 state. Yield of fluorescence from the S2 state is reduced in polar solvents because of reduced energy gap between the S2 and S1 states, Delta E(S2-S1), as well as interaction with the solvent molecules. Occurrence of S2-fluorescence in polar solvents, despite small energy gap, suggests that symmetry allowed S2(1A1) --> S0 (1A1) radiative and symmetry forbidden S2(1A1) --> S1 (1A2) nonradiative transitions are the factors responsible for the S2 fluorescence in MT. Lifetime of the S2 state is shorter (varying in the range 0.28-3.5 ps in different solvents) than that predicted from the Delta E(S2-S1) value and this can be attributed to its flexible molecular structure, which promotes an efficient intramolecular radiationless deactivation pathways. The lifetime of the S1 state (approximately 1.9-6.5 ps) is also very short because of small energy difference between the S1 and T1 states (Delta E(S1-T1) approximately 300 cm(-1)) in cyclohexane and hydrogen-bonding interaction as well as the presence of the isoenergetic T1(pipi*) state to enhance the rate of the intersystem crossing process from the S1(npi*) state in protic solvents.

S2 Fluorescence and Ultrafast Relaxation Dynamics of the S2 and S1 States of a Ketocyanine Dye

Dynamics of the excited singlet (both the S2 and S1) states of a ketocyanine dye, namely, 2,5-bis[(2,3-dihydroindolyl)-propylene]-cyclopentanone (KCD), have been investigated in different kinds of media using steady-state absorption and emission as well as femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopic techniques. Steady-state fluorescence measurements, following photoexcitation of KCD to its second excited singlet state, reveal dual fluorescence (emission from both the S2 and S1 states) behavior. Although the intensity of the S2 --> S0 fluorescence is weaker than that of the S1 --> S0 fluorescence in solutions at room temperature (298 K), the former becomes as much as or more intense than the latter in rigid matrixes at 77 K. The lifetime of the S2 state is short and varies between 0.2 and 0.6 ps in different solvents. After its creation, the S2 state undergoes two simultaneous processes, namely, S2 --> S0 fluorescence and S2 --> S1 internal conversion. Time-resolved measurements reveal the presence of an ultrafast component in the decay dynamics of the S1 state. A good correlation between the lifetime of this component and the longitudinal relaxation times (tauL) of the solvents suggests that this component arises due to solvation in polar solvents. More significant evolution of the spectroscopic properties of the S1 state in alcoholic solvents in the ultrafast time domain has been explained by the occurrence of the repositioning of the hydrogen bonds around the carbonyl group in the excited state of KCD. In 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol, a strongly hydrogen bond donating solvent, it has even been possible to establish the existence of two distinct forms of the S1 state, namely, the non-hydrogen-bonded (or free) molecule and the hydrogen-bonded complex.

Excited-state dynamics of the fluorescent probe Lucifer Yellow in liquid solutions and in heterogeneous media

The photophysics of the dye Lucifer Yellow ethylenediamine (LYen) has been investigated in various polar solvents. The main deactivation pathways of its first singlet excited state are the fluorescence and the intersystem crossing. In water, non-radiative decay by intermolecular proton transfer becomes a significant deactivation channel. The early fluorescence dynamics, which was investigated in liquids and in reverse micelles, was found to depend substantially on the environment. An important static quenching of LYen by tryptophan and indole occurring in the subpicosecond timescale was observed. The use of the fluorescence dynamics of LYen as a local probe is illustrated by preliminary results obtained with a biotinylated Lucifer Yellow derivative complexed with avidin.
