Surface Plasmon-Enhanced Photoemission and Electron Acceleration with Ultrashort Laser Pulses

Plasmon-Driven Photocatalysis Leads to Products Known from E-beam and X-ray-Induced Surface Chemistry

Plasmonic metal nanostructures can concentrate incident optical fields in nanometer-sized volumes, called hot spots. This leads to enhanced optical responses of molecules in such a hot spot but also to chemical transformations, driven by plasmon-induced hot carriers. Here, we employ tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) to study the mechanism of these reactions in situ at the level of a single hot spot. Direct spectroscopic measurements reveal the energy distribution of hot electrons, as well as the temperature changes due to plasmonic heating. Therefore, charge-driven reactions can be distinguished from thermal reaction pathways. The products of the hot-carrier-driven reactions are strikingly similar to the ones known from X-ray or e-beam-induced surface chemistry despite the >100-fold energy difference between visible and X-ray photons. Understanding the analogies between those two scenarios implies new strategies for rational design of plasmonic photocatalytic reactions and for the elimination of photoinduced damage in plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy.

Hot electrons in water: injection and ponderomotive acceleration by means of plasmonic nanoelectrodes

We present a theoretical and experimental study of a plasmonic nanoelectrode architecture that is able to inject bunches of hot electrons into an aqueous environment. In this approach, electrons are accelerated in water by ponderomotive forces up to energies capable of exciting or ionizing water molecules. This ability is enabled by the nanoelectrode structure (extruding out of a metal baseplate), which allows for the production of an intense plasmonic hot spot at the apex of the structure while maintaining the electrical connection to a virtually unlimited charge reservoir. The electron injection is experimentally monitored by recording the current transmitted through the water medium, whereas the electron acceleration is confirmed by observation of the bubble generation for a laser power exceeding a proper threshold. An understanding of the complex physics involved is obtained via a numerical approach that explicitly models the electromagnetic hot spot generation, electron-by-electron injection via multiphoton absorption, acceleration by ponderomotive forces and electron-water interaction through random elastic and inelastic scattering. The model predicts a critical electron density for bubble nucleation that nicely matches the experimental findings and reveals that the efficiency of energy transfer from the plasmonic hot spot to the free electron cloud is much more efficient (17 times higher) in water than in a vacuum. Because of their high kinetic energy and large reduction potential, these proposed wet hot electrons may provide new opportunities in photocatalysis, electrochemical processes and hot-electron driven chemistry.

Enhanced photoemission from laser-excited plasmonic nano-objects in periodic arrays

The process of photoelectron emission from gold surfaces covered with nano-objects that are organized in the form of a periodic array is addressed in the short laser pulse regime ([Formula: see text] fs) at moderate intensities [Formula: see text] W cm(-2) and for various laser wavelengths. The emission spectrum from a gold single crystal measured under the same conditions is used for reference. The comparison of the photo-emission yield and the energy of the ejected electrons with their counterparts from the (more simple) reference system shows that the periodic conditions imposed on the target surface drastically enhance both quantities. In addition to the standard mechanism of Coulomb explosion, a second mechanism comes into play, driven by surface plasmon excitation. This can be clearly demonstrated by varying the laser wavelength. This interpretation of the experimental data is supported by predictions from model calculations that account both for the primary quantum electron emission and for the subsequent surface-plasmon-driven acceleration in the vacuum. Despite the fact that the incident laser intensity is as low as [Formula: see text] W cm(-2), such a structured target permits generating electrons with energies as high as 300 eV. Experiments with two incident laser beams of different wavelengths with an adjustable delay, have also been carried out. The results show that there exist various channels for the decay of the photo-emission signal, depending on the target type. These observations are shedding light on the various relaxation mechanisms that take place on different timescales.
