Abstract
The present study aimed to compare the expression of p63/p40 with smooth muscle actin (SMA) and vimentin (VIM) by myoepithelial cells in minor salivary gland tumors. Fifty-two formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples of minor salivary gland tumors derived from intercalated duct (pleomorphic adenoma [PA], adenoid cystic carcinoma [ACC], epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma [EMC], polymorphous adenocarcinoma [PAC], and secretory carcinoma [SC]) and 3 samples of minor salivary gland tumors derived from excretory duct (mucoepidermoid carcinoma [MEC]) were evaluated by means of immunohistochemistry. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The results indicated that p63 and p40 expression were detected in myoepithelial cells present in PA, ACC, and EMC. However, both proteins were also observed in squamous areas of PA and all cases of MEC. SMA were noticed in some myoepithelial cells of PA, ACC, and EMC. Expression of SMA was negative in the other salivary gland tumors evaluated. VIM was constantly expressed by myoepithelial cells in PA, ACC, and EMC. VIM was also observed in cells of PAC and SC, but not in squamous areas of PA and MEC. In conclusion, p63 expression is almost comparable with VIM in detecting myoepithelial cells, an immunolabeling pattern not followed by p40, and consequently, caution has to be taken during the interpretation of salivary gland tumor exhibiting an p63/p40 phenotype in order to avoid a misdiagnosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Canalicular adenoma (CA) is an uncommon but unique benign tumor of salivary gland origin. It is the third most common benign tumor of minor salivary glands, representing less than 1% of all salivary neoplasms. A systematic review is presented of reported cases of CA, to determine trends in presentation, diagnostic features, treatment, and patient outcome. METHODS Searches of specific databases, as reported, were carried out to identify papers reporting CA. The variables were patient symptoms, tumor location, histopathological findings, demographics, treatment, follow-up, and recurrence. RESULTS 430 cases were identified; the most common location was in the upper lip (66.3%), followed by hard palate (14.5%). The most common clinical presentation was a nodule (46.5%), followed by asymptomatic (29.5%), and discomfort (28.7%). CA was most frequently seen in females (64%). The average age was 66.3 years. 97% of cases were treated surgically. The average follow-up was 136.3 months, and recurrence was reported in 3% of the cases. CONCLUSION CA shows a strong predilection for the upper lip. CAs are frequently asymptomatic, but the principal symptom was pressure.

Abstract
Multiple salivary gland tumors (MSGTs) are most common in the major than minor salivary glands. The most MSGTs are synchronous, either benign or malignant. A 61-year-old woman was referred presenting nine submucosal nodules, firm to fluctuant, being five nodules on the right side and four nodules on the left side of the upper lip. An incisional biopsy was performed. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was performed in 5-µm sections for histopathologic analysis. Immunohistochemical reactions were carried out in 3-µm sections in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. The histopathological analysis showed focal area containing low-grade polymorphous adenocarcinoma (PAC) and multiple canalicular adenomas (CAs). Immunohistochemical analysis for each lesion was carefully investigated. Here, we present an unusual case of synchronous PAC and multiple CAs of the minor salivary glands, affecting the upper lip, which appears to be the first case showing PAC and CA.

Abstract
Canalicular adenoma (CA) is an uncommon benign salivary gland tumor that mostly occurs in the upper lip. Despite its benign nature, some patients may present multiple nodules and also microscopic growth that can be multifocal with foci of tumor within the adjacent gland. Microscopically, CA can be mistaken for a polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) or basal cell adenoma (BCA), and immunohistochemistry can be helpful in differentiating them. Two cases of canalicular adenoma showing tumor foci within the adjacent gland are described. Both cases occurred in the upper lip of white females aged 72 and 79 years. In addition to the histological multifocal aspect, one of the patients presented bi-lateral nodules. Histological examination of both lesions revealed interconnecting and branching canal-like structures composed by uniform columnar and sometimes cuboidal cells, partially encapsulated. Immunohistochemical analysis showed intense expression of cytokeratins (CK) 7, a weak reaction to CK14 and a negative reaction to vimentin. Upon the diagnosis of CA the lesions were excised. In conclusion, it is important to properly diagnose CA and differentiate its multifocal aspect from a malignant behavior.

Abstract
There is a lack of a comprehensive immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis of canalicular adenoma (CanAd), especially when combined with a description of the unique histologic features. Given the usual small biopsies, IHC may be useful in distinguishing CanAd from other tumors in the differential diagnosis. Retrospective. The patients included 54 females and 13 males (4.2:1), aged 43-90 years, with a mean age at presentation of 69.9 years. Clinical presentation was generally a mass (n = 61) slowly increasing in size (mean 38.5 months), affecting the upper lip (n = 46), buccal mucosa (n = 17) or palate (n = 4), involving the right (n = 29), left (n = 24) or midline (n = 9), without any major salivary gland tumors. The tumors ranged in size from 0.2 to 3 cm (mean 1.2 cm). Most tumors were multilobular or bosselated (76 %), often surrounded by a capsule. Histologically, the tumors were characterized by cystic spaces, tumor cords with beading, tubule formation, and by the presence of luminal squamous balls (n = 41). The cells were cuboidal to columnar with stippled chromatin. Mitoses were inconspicuous. A myxoid stroma (n = 64), sclerosis (n = 42), luminal hemorrhage (n = 51), and luminal microliths (calcifications) (n = 33) were characteristic. Nine (13.4 %) were multifocal. CanAd showed the following characteristic immunohistochemistry findings: CK-pan and S100 protein (strong, diffuse reaction); peripheral or luminal GFAP reaction; CK5/6 and p16 luminal squamous ball reaction; SOX10 nuclear reaction; cytoplasmic p63 reaction. CanAd are unique minor salivary gland tumors showing a distinct architecture and phenotype. They predilect to older women, with the majority multilobulated and affecting the upper lip, multifocal in 13 %; no major salivary gland tumors were identified. S100 protein, CK-pan, GFAP and SOX10 are positive, with luminal squamous balls highlighted by CK5/6 or p16.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To report a case of canalicular adenoma (CA) and discuss the use of immunohistochemistry to better address the diagnosis given some unusual characteristics in this patient. BACKGROUND CA is an uncommon benign neoplasm that can develop in minor salivary gland duct tissues throughout the oral cavity. At histology, it shares several features with other salivary tumors. Immunohistochemistry can be useful in the differential diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS The clinical presentation consisted in a nodule on the left upper lip of an 85-year-old man. The patient's main complaint was upper denture instability secondary to soft tissue changes. The nodule was excised under local anesthesia and underwent histological and immunohistochemical examination to rule out any malignancy. RESULTS Histological findings, cytokeratin positivity and the absence of any reactivity to specific markers of myoepithelial differentiation confirmed the epithelial nature of the lesion. CONCLUSION The histological diagnosis of benign salivary tumors such as CA can be confirmed by immunohistochemistry.

Abstract
Canalicular adenoma (CA) is a rare, benign epithelial neoplasm of the salivary glands. Historically considered to be a variant of basal cell adenoma, this "monomorphic" adenoma has a distinct clinical, morphologic, and immunohistochemical profile. The putative cell of origin remains a topic of debate. A combination of morphology, immunohistochemistry, and ultrastructural analyses have been employed to determine histogenesis, but the interpretations of these studies have implicated multiple different cell types along the salivary gland duct as the cell of origin. The authors sought to further characterize CA using electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and special and immuno-stains on 7 cases. Their morphologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural findings support a cell of origin demonstrating features of both the intercalated duct cells and the striated duct luminal epithelial cells.

Abstract
Background This study is an analysis of the prevalence of polymorphous low grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) in epidemiological surveys of salivary tumors published in the English language from 1992 to 2012. Methods These surveys included studies from different researchers, countries and continents. The 57 surveys for which it was possible to calculate the percentage of PLGAs among all malignant minor salivary gland tumors (MMSGT) were included in this review. Results The statistical analyses show significant differences in the PLGA percentage by time period, country and continent in the studies included in this review. The percentage of PLGAs among MMSGTs varied among the studies, ranging from 0.0% to 46.8%. PLGA rates have varied over the period studied and have most recently increased. The frequency of reported PLGA cases also varied from 0.0% to 24.8% by the country in which the MMSGT studies were performed. The PLGA percentages also varied significantly by continent, with frequencies ranging from 3.9% in Asia to 20.0% in Oceania Conclusion Based on these results, we concluded that although the accuracy of PLGA diagnoses has improved, they remain a challenge for pathologists. To facilitate PLGA diagnoses, we have therefore made some suggestions for pathologists regarding tumors composed of single-layer strands of cells that form all of the histological patterns present in the tumor, consistency of the cytological appearance and uniformly positive CK7, vimentin and S100 immunohistochemistry, which indicate a single PLGA phenotype. Abstract
Canalicular adenoma is an uncommon benign tumour that generally arises in the minor salivary glands of individuals over 60 years old. This study illustrates a case of canalicular adenoma in a 70-year-old female, presenting as two distinct asymptomatic nodules in the upper lip. Immunohistochemistry analysis was performed. Clinical features, management, histology and immunoprofile from this case and from the literature are discussed.

Abstract
Canalicular adenoma is a benign neoplasm of the minor salivary glands. The most common site is the upper lip, and the adenoma usually appears as a single lesion. Few cases of multiple foci of canalicular adenoma (CA) have been reported in literature. We report a case of a 78-year-old woman with CA of the nasolabial wrinkle on both sides of the nose, which occurred at the same time. The lesions recurred after about 1 year. This report adds to the literature another case of multiple, bilateral CA with synchronous occurrence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) is a rare tumor that mostly affects minor salivary glands. The purpose of this study is to report six new cases followed-up during a long period. We also review the literature concerning clinical, histological and immunohistochemical features, as well as the proper management. METHODS Malignant tumors of the salivary glands diagnosed in our department from 1990 to 1999 were reviewed. A total of 66 cases were registered. Six of these cases were diagnosed as PLGA. All cases satisfied the histopathological criteria for this entity, and at least 3 years follow-up was available. RESULTS In the six cases the primary location was the mucosa of the palate. Hard palate was affected in 83.3% of the cases. There were no cases of extraoral PLGA in our series. Tumors were ulcerated in a 16.6% of the cases, and exofitic in the other 86.4%. Histologically, it was observed a tumoral proliferation of round clusters of uniform cells with round-to-oval clear nuclei and small nucleoli. All the cases underwent surgical management with local excision with surgical margins, five of them with bone extirpation associated. No recurrence was observed in four cases, whereas the remaining two cases showed recurrence in the follow-up. In one of the patients, lococervical recurrence appeared 12 months after the surgery, and this patient died after a few months. The remaining patients have been followed-up for 11, 7, 4 and 3 years postoperatively, with no evidence of recurrence. CONCLUSION Our results for a long follow-up period support the idea for a low grade of malignancy and good prognosis of this tumor, but the appearance of recurrences many years after the surgery must induce us to be very careful and systematic with the follow-up.

Abstract
Canalicular adenoma is a rare benign salivary gland tumor of the oral cavity, typically located in the upper lip and buccal mucosa and infrequently found on the palate. The tumor is usually confined to soft tissue and rarely presents with bone erosion. A case of a large and locally-aggressive palatal canalicular adenoma is presented. The lesion presented herein was an asymptomatic ulcerated mass with significant bone erosion. The tumor was managed surgically with excision and reconstruction of the resulting palatal defect with a full temporalis muscle flap.

Abstract
This case report describes a rare case of canalicular adenoma arising in the upper lip of a 61-year-old male patient. Macroscopic examination of the tumor revealed a well-defined, smooth, firm, elastic hard, round nodule with a diameter of 1.0 cm. The cut surface was white. Histopathology showed that the tumor was an encapsulated mass with a complex cellular pattern of anastomosing duct-like or trabecular structures lined by a single layer of tall columnar epithelial cells, which were embedded in a loose, fibrous, and highly vascular connective tissue stroma. The tumor cells were immunoreactive to AE1/AE3, CK19 and S-100, were partially positive for CK7, CK8, GFAP and PCNA, but were negative for SMA, CK13, CK14 and vimentin.
