Ultrasound promoted N-alkylation of pyrrole using potassium superoxide as base in crown ether

Synthesis of 5-Nitrotetrazolates by the Direct Oxidation of 5-Aminotetrazole in a Single-Pot Synthesis without Isolation of Explosive Intermediates

A readily available oxidizer, potassium superoxide can be used for the oxidation of 5-amino-1H-tetrazole (5-AT) to 5-nitrotetrazole (5-NT) in high yields in a single-pot synthesis. This strategy reduces the synthesis of this important energetic material down to a single step and eliminates highly sensitive diazonium and copper salt primary explosive intermediates. Use of dimethyl sulfoxide along with molecular sieves and 18-crown-6 as phase transfer catalyst promoted faster reaction rates and greater yield. The overall yield of this process is 48-53 % and the resultant aqueous solution of product was effectively used for the preparation of nitrotetrazole-containing primary explosive DBX-1. Unlike current methods of nitrotetrazole preparation, this entirely solution-based route results in a final solution of sodium nitrotetrazolate, without the need to handle energetic intermediates or products, making it the safest method of nitrotetrazole preparation reported to date.

Superoxide Ion: Generation and Chemical Implications

Superoxide ion (O2(•-)) is of great significance as a radical species implicated in diverse chemical and biological systems. However, the chemistry knowledge of O2(•-) is rather scarce. In addition, numerous studies on O2(•-) were conducted within the latter half of the 20th century. Therefore, the current advancement in technology and instrumentation will certainly provide better insights into mechanisms and products of O2(•-) reactions and thus will result in new findings. This review emphasizes the state-of-the-art research on O2(•-) so as to enable researchers to venture into future research. It comprises the main characteristics of O2(•-) followed by generation methods. The reaction types of O2(•-) are reviewed, and its potential applications including the destruction of hazardous chemicals, synthesis of organic compounds, and many other applications are highlighted. The O2(•-) environmental chemistry is also discussed. The detection methods of O2(•-) are categorized and elaborated. Special attention is given to the feasibility of using ionic liquids as media for O2(•-), addressing the latest progress of generation and applications. The effect of electrodes on the O2(•-) electrochemical generation is reviewed. Finally, some remarks and future perspectives are concluded.

An efficient and convenient procedure for the synthesis of 2-alkyl-2-alkoxy-1,2-di(furan-2-yl)ethanone under ultrasound in the presence of solid-liquid phase transfer catalysis conditions

Irradiation with ultrasound is found to facilitate the synthesis of 2-alkyl-2-alkoxy-1,2-di(furan-2-yl)ethanone in the presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) as solid-liquid phase transfer catalysis. A higher yields (>70%) and shorter reaction time (<15 min) give this method obvious advantages over the conventional ones.

Ultrasound promoted C-alkylation of benzyl cyanide--effect of reactor and ultrasound parameters

Phase transfer catalysis is used widely in the synthesis of various organic chemicals in both liquid-liquid and solid-liquid systems. The C-alkylation of benzyl cyanide by 2-bromopropane in the presence of sodium hydroxide was investigated. The reaction rate of the phase transfer reaction can be increased by ultrasound, but frequency and power of ultrasound and the geometry of the ultrasonic field inside the reactor influence the reaction strongly. The results demonstrate clearly, that to achieve a high efficiency of ultrasonic systems in chemical processes the ultrasonic parameters and geometry of the sonotrode had to be adopted.

Effects of ultrasound on the formation of alpha-benzoylbenzyl cyanide from benzyl cyanide and alkylphenyl ketone from alpha-alkylbenzyl cyanide by potassium superoxide in the presence of crown ether

Ultrasound accelerates the formation of alpha-benzoylbenzyl cyanide and benzoic acid in the reaction of benzyl cyanide with potassium superoxide in the presence of 18-crown-6. Similarly, 4-methylbenzyl cyanide, 4-methoxybenzyl cyanide and 4-chlorobenzyl cyanide gave the corresponding alpha-(4-methylbenzoyl)-4-methylbenzyl cyanide, alpha-(4-methoxybenzoyl)-4-methoxybenzyl cyanide and alpha-(4-chlorobenzoyl)-4-chlorobenzyl cyanide in 25-43% isolated yields under the same reaction conditions. Benzoic, p-toluic, 4-methoxybenzoic and 4-chlorobenzoic acids were also formed in these reactions. No reaction was observed when the mixture was simply stirred. Reflux instead of sonication gave lower yields of the products. However, alpha-alkylbenzyl cyanide produced a high yield of the phenylalkyl ketones when stirred. Interestingly, the corresponding benzoic acid was not formed in these reactions. Possible mechanisms for the formation of alpha-benzoylbenzyl cyanide from benzyl cyanide and phenylalkyl ketones from alpha-alkylbenzyl cyanide are also proposed.
