Estimation of the latent track size of CR-39 using atomic force microscope

In PIXE analysis system and Tandem Accelerator facility (PASTA) of NIRS, we are using Scanning Transmission Ion Microscopy (STIM) method and solid track detector to diagnose the spatial resolution of scanning microbeam PIXE analysis system. These methods are widely used by many microbeam facilities.

A new method for the simultaneous detection of mammalian cells and ion tracks on a surface of CR-39

The geometric locations of ion traversals in mammalian cells constitute important information in the study of heavy ion-induced biological effects. We employed a contact microscopy technique, which was developed for boron imaging in boron neutron capture therapy to the irradiation mammalian cells by low-energy heavy ions. This method enables the simultaneous visualization of mammalian cells as a relief on a plastic track detector, CR-39, and the etch pits which indicate the positions of ion traversals. This technique provides visual geometric information about the cells and ion traversal, without any specially designed devices or microscopes. Only common laboratory equipment, such as a conventional optical microscope, a UV lamp, and commercially available CR-39 is required. To validate this method, CHO-K1 and HeLa cells were cultured on the CR-39 surface and then irradiated with low-energy Ar and Ne ions, respectively. The positions of induced DNA double strand breaks were detected as gamma-H2AX fluorescent spots, which coincided with the positions of the etch pits in the cell relief image.

Proton tracks and the formation of pores in poly[diethylene glycol bis-(allyl carbonate)]

Modern dosimetry needs efficient detectors for registering light ions, especially light ions having energies of up to 10 MeV/amu. That is why this research pays attention to the development of materials for such a task. In this work, a CR-39 detector, which is the most efficient detector, was used. It was irradiated with low-energy protons. Using sensitive electrolytic etching and electron scanning microscopy, a complete analysis was carried out of the process of the formation of a pore starting from its opening to the final stage of its formation. The process of sequential track breakthroughs was observed. The data obtained on the shape of the pore and the parameters of its formation allow simulation of the process of etching. The etch rates and sensitivity of etching are determined. The influence of energy losses on the geometry of the pore is considered.
