Interactions of pulsatile upstream forcing with flow-induced oscillations of a collapsed tube: mode-locking

Two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation for synchronized oscillatory flows in two collapsible channels connected in parallel

We investigated self-sustained oscillation in a collapsible channel, in which a part of one rigid wall is replaced by a thin elastic wall, and synchronization phenomena in the two channels connected in parallel. We performed a two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation in a pair of collapsible channels which merged into a single channel downstream. The stable synchronization modes depended on the distance between the deformable region and the merging point; only an in-phase mode was stable for the large distance, in-phase and antiphase modes were bistable for the middle distance, and again only an in-phase mode was stable for the small distance. An antiphase mode became stable through the subcritical pitchfork bifurcation by decreasing the distance. Further decreasing the distance, the antiphase mode became unstable through the subcritical Neimark-Sacker bifurcation. We also clarified the distance dependences of the amplitude and frequency for each stable synchronization mode.

Aperiodic flow-induced oscillations of collapsible tubes: a critical reappraisal

The evidence for the aperiodic self-excited oscillations of flow-conveying collapsible tubes being mathematically chaotic is re-examined. Many cases which powerfully suggest nonlinear deterministic behaviour have not been recorded over time-spans which allow their exhaustive examination. The present investigation centred on a previously recorded robust and generic oscillation, but more recent and more discerning tests were applied. Despite hints that a low embedding dimension might suffice, the data appeared on most indices high-dimensional. A U-shaped return map was found and modelled using both radial basis functions and polynomials, but lack of detailed structure in the map prevented effective parameter estimation. On the basis of power-law rather than exponential divergence of nearby trajectories, and of inability to discriminate against behaviour which would also be manifested by a surrogate consisting of a noise-perturbed nonlinear periodic oscillator, it is concluded that the data do not support the idea that the aperiodicity in the particular oscillation examined is caused by deterministic chaos. There was evidence that the distributed nature of the physical system might underlie aspects of the high dimensionality. We advocate equally searching testing of any future candidate chaotic oscillations in the investigation of collapsed-tube flows.

The effect of perfusion on soft tissue mechanical properties: a computational model

Some simple finite element models were constructed to investigate the magnitude and character of changes in mechanical properties of very soft tissues due to the loss of perfusion. Changes in the apparent stress-strain curve were used to characterise the effect of simulated blood perfusion pressure on the engineering stress-strain curve. The results indicated that the blood to tissue volume ratio and the perfusion pressure have the strongest effect on the effective stress-strain response of a representative tissue cell. Tissue viscoelasticity increased the sensitivity of the system to perfusion pressure changes.
