Solvent-regulated ordering in block copolymers

Influence of PEG-PPG-PEG Block Copolymer Concentration and Coagulation Bath Temperature on the Structure Formation of Polyphenylsulfone Membranes

The effect of amphiphilic block copolymer polyethylene glycol (PEG)-polypropylene glycol (PPG)-PEG concentration in the polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) casting solution and coagulation bath temperature (CBT) on the structure, separation, and antifouling performance of PPSU ultrafiltration membranes was studied for the first time. According to the phase diagram obtained, PPSU/PEG-PPG-PEG/N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) systems are characterized by a narrow miscibility gap. It was found that 20 wt.% PPSU solutions in NMP with the addition of 5-15 wt.% of PEG-PPG-PEG block copolymer feature upper critical solution temperature, gel point, and lower critical solution temperature. Membrane composition and structure were studied by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron and atomic force microscopies, and water contact angle measurements. The addition of PEG-PPG-PPG to the PPSU casting solution was found to increase the hydrophilicity of the membrane surface (water contact angle decreased from 78° for the reference PPSU membrane down to 50° for 20 wt.%PPSU/15 wt.% PEG-PPG-PEG membrane). It was revealed that the pure water flux increased with the rise of CBT from 18-20 L·m-2·h-1 for the reference PPSU membrane up to 38-140 L·m-2·h-1 for 20 wt.% PPSU/10-15 wt.% PEG-PPG-PEG membranes. However, the opposite trend was observed for 20 wt.% PPSU/5-7 wt.% PEG-PPG-PEG membranes: pure water flux decreased with an increase in CBT. This is due to the differences in the mechanism of phase separation (non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) or a combination of NIPS and temperature-induced phase separation (TIPS)). It was shown that 20 wt.% PPSU/10 wt.% PEG-PPG-PEG membranes were characterized by significantly higher antifouling performance (FRR-81-89%, DRr-26-32%, DRir-10-20%, DT-33-45%) during the ultrafiltration of bovine serum albumin solutions compared to the reference PPSU membrane prepared at different CBTs (FRR-29-38%, DRr-6-14%, DRir-74-89%, DT-88-94%).

Effects of Ionic Liquids on the Cylindrical Self-Assemblies Formed by Poly(ethylene oxide)-Poly(propylene oxide)-Poly(ethylene oxide) Block Copolymers in Water

Aiming at the fundamental understanding of solvent effects in amphiphilic polymer systems, we considered poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) block copolymers in water mixed with an ionic liquid-ethylammonium nitrate (EAN), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIMPF6), or 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF4)-and we investigated the hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystal structures by means of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). At 50% polymer, the hexagonal structure (cylinders of self-assembled block copolymer) was maintained across the solvent mixing ratio. The effects of the ionic liquids were reflected in the characteristic length scales of the hexagonal structure and were interpreted in terms of the location of the ionic liquid in the self-assembled block copolymer domains. The protic ionic liquid EAN was evenly distributed within the aqueous domains and showed no affinity for the interface, whereas BMIMPF6 preferred to swell PEO and was located at the interface so as to reduce contact with water. BMIMBF4 was also interfacially active, but to a lesser extent.

Phase Behavior and Structure of Poloxamer Block Copolymers in Protic and Aprotic Ionic Liquids

Ionic liquids are promising media for self-assembling block copolymers in applications such as energy storage. A robust design of block copolymer formulations in ionic liquids requires fundamental knowledge of their self-organization at the nanoscale. To this end, here, we focus on modeling two-component systems comprising a Poly(ethylene oxide)-poly (propylene oxide)-Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) block copolymer (Pluronic P105: EO37PO58EO37) and room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs): protic ethylammonium nitrate (EAN), aprotic ionic liquids (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIMPF6), or 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF4). Rich structural polymorphism was exhibited, including phases of micellar (sphere) cubic, hexagonal (cylinder), bicontinuous cubic, and lamellar (bilayer) lyotropic liquid crystalline (LLC) ordered structures in addition to solution regions. The characteristic scales of the structural lengths were obtained using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data analysis. On the basis of phase behavior and structure, the effects of the ionic liquid solvent on block copolymer organization were assessed and contrasted to those of molecular solvents, such as water and formamide.

The Power of Automation in Polymer Chemistry: Precision Synthesis of Multiblock Copolymers with Block Sequence Control

Machines can revolutionize the field of chemistry and material science, driving the development of new chemistries, increasing productivity, and facilitating reaction scale up. The incorporation of automated systems in the field of polymer chemistry has however proven challenging owing to the demanding reaction conditions, rendering the automation setup complex and costly. There is an imminent need for an automation platform which uses fast and simple polymerization protocols, while providing a high level of control on the structure of macromolecules via precision synthesis. This work combines an oxygen tolerant, room temperature polymerization method with a simple liquid handling robot to automatically prepare precise and high order multiblock copolymers with unprecedented livingness even after many chain extensions. The highest number of blocks synthesized in such a system is reported, demonstrating the capabilities of this automated platform for the rapid synthesis and complex polymer structure formation.

New approach for SANS measurement of micelle chain mixing during size and morphology transitions

Chain exchange in amphiphilic block polymer micelles is measurable with time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (TR-SANS) where contrast-matched conditions reveal chain mixing as reduced intensity. However, analyzing chain mixing on short time scales e.g. during micelle transformations remains challenging. SANS model fitting can quantify chain mixing during size and morphology changes, however short acquisition times lead to lower data statistics (higher error). Such data are unsuitable for form factor fitting, especially with polydisperse and/or multimodal scenarios. An integrated-reference approach, R(t), is compatible with such data by using fixed reference patterns for the unmixed and fully mixed states that are each integrated to improve data statistics (lower error). Although the R(t) approach is tolerant of low data statistics, it remains incompatible with size and morphology changes. A new shifting references relaxation approach, SRR(t), is proposed where reference patterns are acquired at each time point to enable mixed state calculations regardless of short acquisition times. The additional experimental measurements needed are described which provide these time-varying reference patterns. The use of reference patterns makes the SRR(t) approach size/morphology-agnostic, allowing for the extent of micelle mixing to be directly calculated without this knowledge. SRR(t) is thus compatible with arbitrary levels of complexity and can provide accurate assessment of the mixed state which could support future model analysis. Calculated scattering datasets were used to demonstrate the SRR(t) approach during multiple size, morphology, and solvent conditions (scenarios 1-3). The mixed state calculated from the SRR(t) approach is shown to be accurate for all three scenarios.

Processive Pathways to Metastability in Block Copolymer Thin Films

Block copolymers (BCPs) self-assemble into intricate nanostructures that enhance a multitude of advanced applications in semiconductor processing, membrane science, nanopatterned coatings, nanocomposites, and battery research. Kinetics and thermodynamics of self-assembly are crucial considerations in controlling the nanostructure of BCP thin films. The equilibrium structure is governed by a molecular architecture and the chemistry of its repeat units. An enormous library of materials has been synthesized and they naturally produce a rich equilibrium phase diagram. Non-equilibrium phases could potentially broaden the structural diversity of BCPs and relax the synthetic burden of creating new molecules. Furthermore, the reliance on synthesis could be complicated by the scalability and the materials compatibility. Non-equilibrium phases in BCPs, however, are less explored, likely due to the challenges in stabilizing the metastable structures. Over the past few decades, a variety of processing techniques were introduced that influence the phase transformation of BCPs to achieve a wide range of morphologies. Nonetheless, there is a knowledge gap on how different processive pathways can induce and control the non-equilibrium phases in BCP thin films. In this review, we focus on different solvent-induced and thermally induced processive pathways, and their potential to control the non-equilibrium phases with regards to their unique aspects and advantages. Furthermore, we elucidate the limitations of these pathways and discuss the potential avenues for future investigations.

Dynamic Light Scattering Based Microrheology of End-Functionalised Triblock Copolymer Solutions

Nano-sized particles functionalised with short single-stranded (ss)DNAs can act as detectors of complementary DNA strands. Here we consider tri-block-copolymer-based, self-assembling DNA-coated nanoparticles. The copolymers are chemically linked to the DNA strands via azide (N3) groups. The micelles aggregate when they are linked with complementary ssDNA. The advantage of such block-copolymer-based systems is that they are easy to make. Here we show that DNA functionalisation results in inter-micellar attraction, but that N3-groups that have not reacted with the DNA detector strands also change the phase behaviour of the tri-block polymer solution. We studied the triblock copolymer, Pluronic^® F108, which forms spherical micelles in aqueous solutions upon heating. We find that the triblock chains ending with either an N3 or N3-DNA complex show a dramatic change in phase behaviour. In particular, the N3-functionalisation causes the chain ends to cluster below the critical micelle temperature (CMT) of pure F108, forming flower-micelles with the N3-groups at the core, while the PPO groups are exposed to the solvent. Above the CMT, we see an inversion with the PPO chains forming the micellar core, while the N3-groups are now aggregating on the periphery, inducing an attraction between the micelles. Our results demonstrate that, due to the two competing self-assembling mechanisms, the system can form transient hydrogels.

Solvent-assisted self-assembly of block copolymer thin films

Solvent-assisted block copolymer self-assembly is a compelling method for processing and advancing practical applications of these materials due to the exceptional level of the control of BCP morphology and significant acceleration of ordering kinetics. Despite substantial experimental and theoretical efforts devoted to understanding of solvent-assisted BCP film ordering, the development of a universal BCP patterning protocol remains elusive; possibly due to a multitude of factors which dictate the self-assembly scenario. The aim of this review is to aggregate both seminal reports and the latest progress in solvent-assisted directed self-assembly and to provide the reader with theoretical background, including the outline of BCP ordering thermodynamics and kinetics phenomena. We also indicate significant BCP research areas and emerging high-tech applications where solvent-assisted processing might play a dominant role.

Controlling the volume fraction of glass-forming colloidal suspensions using thermosensitive host "mesogels"

The key parameter controlling the glass transition of colloidal suspensions is φ, the fraction of the sample volume occupied by the particles. Unfortunately, changing φ by varying an external parameter, e.g., temperature T as in molecular glass formers, is not possible, unless one uses thermosensitive colloidal particles, such as the popular poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAM) microgels. These, however, have several drawbacks, including high deformability, osmotic deswelling, and interpenetration, which complicate their use as a model system to study the colloidal glass transition. Here, we propose a new system consisting of a colloidal suspension of non-deformable spherical silica nanoparticles, in which PNiPAM hydrogel spheres of ∼100-200μm size are suspended. These non-colloidal "mesogels" allow for controlling the sample volume effectively available to the silica nanoparticles and hence their φ, thanks to the T-induced change in mesogels' volume. Using optical microscopy, we first show that the mesogels retain their ability to change size with T when suspended in Ludox suspensions, similarly as in water. We then show that their size is independent of the sample thermal history such that a well-defined, reversible relationship between T and φ may be established. Finally, we use space-resolved dynamic light scattering to demonstrate that, upon varying T, our system exhibits a broad range of dynamical behaviors across the glass transition and beyond, comparable with those exhibited by a series of distinct silica nanoparticle suspensions of various φ.

Recent Progress in Materials Chemistry to Advance Flexible Bioelectronics in Medicine

Designing bioelectronic devices that seamlessly integrate with the human body is a technological pursuit of great importance. Bioelectronic medical devices that reliably and chronically interface with the body can advance neuroscience, health monitoring, diagnostics, and therapeutics. Recent major efforts focus on investigating strategies to fabricate flexible, stretchable, and soft electronic devices, and advances in materials chemistry have emerged as fundamental to the creation of the next generation of bioelectronics. This review summarizes contemporary advances and forthcoming technical challenges related to three principal components of bioelectronic devices: i) substrates and structural materials, ii) barrier and encapsulation materials, and iii) conductive materials. Through notable illustrations from the literature, integration and device fabrication strategies and associated challenges for each material class are highlighted.

Structure and composition of mixed micelles formed by nonionic block copolymers and ionic surfactants in water determined by small-angle neutron scattering with contrast variation

HYPOTHESIS

Complex fluids comprising polymers and surfactants exhibit interesting properties which depend on the overall composition and solvent quality. The ultimate determinants of the macroscopic properties are the nano-scale association domains. Hence it is important to ascertain the structure and composition of the domains, and how they respond to the overall composition.

EXPERIMENTS

The structure and composition of mixed micelles formed in aqueous solution between poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) block copolymers (Pluronics or Poloxamers) and the ionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) are determined from an analysis of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) intensity data obtained at different contrasts. Different polymers and concentrations have been probed.

FINDINGS

The SDS + Pluronic mixed micelles include polymer and some water in the micelle core that is formed primarily by alkyl chains. This is different than what was previously reported, but is consistent with a variety of experimental observations. This is the first report on the structure of SDS + Pluronic P123 (EO₁₉PO₆₉EO₁₉) assemblies. The effects on the mixed micelle structure and composition of the surfactant concentration and the polymer hydrophobicity are discussed here in the context of interactions between the different components.

Dispersion and Localization Behavior of Modified MWCNTs in Immiscible Polymer Blends of Polystyrene and Polybutadiene and in Corresponding Nanostructured Block Copolymers

The influence of carbon nanotube (CNT) modification on the dispersion and localization behavior of the CNTs in immiscible blends of polystyrene (PS) and polybutadiene (PB), and in the nanostructured morphology of a star-shaped styrene-butadiene based block copolymer (BCP), was studied to form a basis for the development of functional materials with defined electrical property profiles. Unmodified multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) were dispersed in PS, PB and PS/PB blends by solution mixing. Additionally, MWCNTs were functionalized with n-octadecylamine and monoamino-terminated polystyrene to increase the compatibility between the homopolymers and the nanofiller. The MWCNT dispersion and the blend morphology formation were studied using transmission light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The MWCNT dispersion could be significantly improved by the modification of the MWCNTs. All MWCNT types were found to preferably localize in the PS phase of the PS/PB blend. However, only blends containing unmodified MWCNTs were electrically conductive. Similar effects were found in BCP/MWCNT composites. The BCP was already electrically conductive with a filler content of 0.1 wt % of unmodified MWCNTs. The stress–strain behavior of the BCP was slightly influenced by MWCNT addition and CNT modification. The dispersability of MWCNTs was significantly improved by CNT functionalization, which indicates a strong polymer-filler interaction.

Adsorption of poly(ethylene oxide)-containing amphiphilic polymers on solid-liquid interfaces: Fundamentals and applications

The adsorption of amphiphilic molecules of varying size on solid-liquid interfaces modulates the properties of colloidal systems. Nonionic, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based amphiphilic molecules are particularly useful because of their graded hydrophobic-hydrophilic nature, which allows for adsorption on a wide array of solid surfaces. Their adsorption also results in other useful properties, such as responsiveness to external stimuli and solubilization of hydrophobic compounds. This review focuses on the adsorption properties of PEO-based amphiphiles, beginning with a discussion of fundamental concepts pertaining to the adsorption of macromolecules on solid-liquid interfaces, and more specifically the adsorption of PEO homopolymers. The main portion of the review highlights studies on factors affecting the adsorption and surface self-assembly of PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymers, where PPO is poly(propylene oxide). Block copolymers of this type are commercially available and of interest in several fields, due to their low toxicity and compatibility in aqueous systems. Examples of applications relevant to the interfacial behavior of PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymers are paints and coatings, detergents, filtration, and drug delivery. The methods discussed herein for manipulating the adsorption properties of PEO-PPO-PEO are emphasized for their ability to shed light on molecular interactions at interfaces. Knowledge of these interactions guides the formulation of novel materials with useful mesoscale organization and micro- and macrophase properties.

Composite Polymer Electrolytes: Nanoparticles Affect Structure and Properties

Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) can significantly improve the performance in electrochemical devices such as lithium-ion batteries. This review summarizes property/performance relationships in the case where nanoparticles are introduced to polymer electrolytes. It is the aim of this review to provide a knowledge network that elucidates the role of nano-additives in the CPEs. Central to the discussion is the impact on the CPE performance of properties such as crystalline/amorphous structure, dielectric behavior, and interactions within the CPE. The amorphous domains of semi-crystalline polymer facilitate the ion transport, while an enhanced mobility of polymer chains contributes to high ionic conductivity. Dielectric properties reflect the relaxation behavior of polymer chains as an important factor in ion conduction. Further, the dielectric constant (ε) determines the capability of the polymer to dissolve salt. The atom/ion/nanoparticle interactions within CPEs suggest ways to enhance the CPE conductivity by generating more free lithium ions. Certain properties can be improved simultaneously by nanoparticle addition in order to optimize the overall performance of the electrolyte. The effects of nano-additives on thermal and mechanical properties of CPEs are also presented in order to evaluate the electrolyte competence for lithium-ion battery applications.

A review of the fundamentals of polymer-modified asphalts: Asphalt/polymer interactions and principles of compatibility

During the last decades, the number of vehicles per citizen as well as the traffic speed and load has dramatically increased. This sudden and somehow unplanned overloading has strongly shortened the life of pavements and increased its cost of maintenance and risks to users. In order to limit the deterioration of road networks, it is necessary to improve the quality and performance of pavements, which was achieved through the addition of a polymer to the bituminous binder. Since their introduction, polymer-modified asphalts have gained in importance during the second half of the twentieth century, and they now play a fundamental role in the field of road paving. With high-temperature and high-shear mixing with asphalt, the polymer incorporates asphalt molecules, thereby forming a swallowed network that involves the entire binder and results in a significant improvement of the viscoelastic properties in comparison with those of the unmodified binder. Such a process encounters the well-known difficulties related to the poor solubility of polymers, which limits the number of macromolecules able to not only form such a structure but also maintain it during high-temperature storage in static conditions, which may be necessary before laying the binder. Therefore, polymer-modified asphalts have been the subject of numerous studies aimed to understand and optimize their structure and storage stability, which gradually attracted polymer scientists into this field that was initially explored by civil engineers. The analytical techniques of polymer science have been applied to polymer-modified asphalts, which resulted in a good understanding of their internal structure. Nevertheless, the complexity and variability of asphalt composition rendered it nearly impossible to generalize the results and univocally predict the properties of a given polymer/asphalt pair. The aim of this paper is to review these aspects of polymer-modified asphalts. Together with a brief description of the specification and techniques proposed to quantify the storage stability, state-of-the-art knowledge about the internal structure and morphology of polymer-modified asphalts is presented. Moreover, the chemical, physical, and processing solutions suggested in the scientific and patent literature to improve storage stability are extensively discussed, with particular attention to an emerging class of asphalt binders in which the technologies of polymer-modified asphalts and polymer nanocomposites are combined. These polymer-modified asphalt nanocomposites have been introduced less than ten years ago and still do not meet the requirements of industrial practice, but they may constitute a solution for both the performance and storage requirements.

Nanoprecipitation of polymeric nanoparticle micelles based on 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) with 2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DPA), for intracellular delivery applications

Biodistribution of nanoparticle-based intracellular delivery systems is mediated primarily by particle size and physicochemical properties. As such, overcoming the rapid removal of these by the reticuloendothelial system remains a significant challenge. To date, a number of copolymer nanoparticle systems based on 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) with 2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DPA), displaying biomimetic and pH responsive properties, have been published, however these have been predominately polymersome based, whilst micelle systems have remained relatively unexplored. This study utilised nanoprecipitation to investigate the effects of solvent and buffer choice upon micelle size and polydispersity, and found using methanol produced monodisperse micelles of circa 70 nm diameter, whilst ethanol produced polydisperse systems with nanoparticles of circa 128 nm diameter. The choice of aqueous buffer, dialysis of the systems, extended storage, and exposure to a wide temperature range (5-70 °C) had no significant effect on micelle size, and the systems were highly resistant to dilution, indicating excellent colloidal stability. Optimisation of the nanoprecipitation process, post precipitation, was investigated, and model drugs successfully loaded whilst maintaining system stability. Subsequent in vitro studies suggested that the micelles were of negligible cellular toxicity, and an apparent cellular uptake was observed via confocal laser scanning microscopy. This paper presents the first report of an optimised nanoprecipitation methodology for the formation of MPC-DPA nanoparticle micelles, and in doing so achieved monodisperse systems with the size and physicochemical characteristics seen as desirable for long circulating therapeutic delivery vehicles.

Mild water-promoted ruthenium nanoparticles as an efficient catalyst for the preparation of cis-rich pinane

Ru nanoparticles were prepared using P123 micelles in water as a stabilizing agent. Microreactors were formed in the hydrogenation reaction system.

Fluorinated amphiphilic block copolymers via RAFT polymerization and their application as surf-RAFT agent in miniemulsion polymerization

Preparation of an amphiphilic block copolymer (Am-BCP) based on poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) and heptafluorobutyl acrylate (HFBA) via RAFT polymerization and application of this Am-BCP as surf-RAFT agent for polymerization of styrene.

Morphology determination of defect-rich diblock copolymer films with time-of-flight grazing-incidence small-angle neutron scattering

The complex nanomorphology of a defect-rich deuterated poly(styrene-block-methyl methacrylate), P(S-b-MMAd), diblock copolymer film is determined with a combination of grazing-incidence small-angle neutron scattering (GISANS) and time-of-flight (TOF) mode. TOF-GISANS enables the simultaneous performance of several GISANS measurements that differ in wavelength. The resulting set of GISANS data covers different ranges of the scattering vector and has different scattering depths. Thus surface-sensitive and bulk-sensitive measurements can be performed simultaneously. The P(S-b-MMAd) film exhibits a lamellar microphase separation structure, which because of the defects is arranged into small, randomly oriented grains, composed of four–five lamellar repetitions. In the near-surface region, the lamellar structure is oriented parallel to the substrate, which explains the smooth surface found with atomic force microscopy.

Solvent-responsive self-assembly of amphiphilic invertible polymers determined with SANS

Amphiphilic invertible polymers (AIPs) are a new class of macromolecules that self-assemble into micellar structures and rapidly change structure in response to changes in solvent polarity. Using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) data, we obtained a quantitative description of the invertible micellar assemblies (IMAs). The detailed composition and size of the assemblies (including the effect of temperature) were measured in aqueous and toluene polymer solutions. The results show that the invertible macromolecules self-assemble into cylindrical core-shell micellar structures. The composition of the IMAs in aqueous and toluene solutions was used to reveal the inversion mechanism by changing the polarity of the medium. Our experiments demonstrate that AIP unimers self-assemble into IMAs in aqueous solution, predominantly through interactions between the hydrophobic moieties of macromolecules. The hydrophobic effect (or solvophobic interaction) is the major driving force for self-assembly. When the polarity of the environment is changed from polar to nonpolar, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and aliphatic dicarboxylic acid fragments of AIP macromolecules tend to replace each other in the core and the shell of the IMAs. However, neither the interior nor the exterior of the IMAs consists of fragments of a single component of the macromolecule. In aqueous solution, with the temperature increasing from 15 to 35 °C, the IMAs' mixed core from aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and PEG moieties and PEG-based shell change the structure. As a result of the progressive dehydration of the macromolecules, the hydration level (water content) in the micellar core decreases at 25 °C, followed by dehydrated PEG fragments entering the interior of the IMAs when the temperature increases to 35 °C.

Epoxy-based hydrogels investigated by high-frequency dielectric relaxation spectroscopy

Using high-frequency dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, nanophase-separated structures of epoxy-based hydrogels were investigated as a function of water content at 25 °C. The dielectric spectra resulting from the hydrogels were reasonably decomposed into two Debye-type and two Cole-Cole-type relaxation modes. The fastest Debye-type mode, found at 8.3 ps, was attributed to the rotational relaxation process of free water molecules in the bulk state. The other Debye-type mode, at ca. 20-34 ps, originates from the exchange process of water molecules that are hydrogen-bonded to the hydrophilic epoxy network portions for free bulk ones. The first Cole-Cole-type mode observed, at ca. 20-370 ps, was assigned to the complicated dynamics for electric dipole moments of the hydrophilic groups in the epoxy networks (mainly monomeric oxyethylene units). The slowest major Cole-Cole-type mode, at 5-29 ns, was attributed to the Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars polarization process and confirmed the presence of the nanophase-separated structures as revealed by the previous small-angle neutron scattering experiments.

Smart Polymersomes: Formation, Characterisation and Applications

The term polymersome, which refers to a fully synthetic polymeric vesicle, became commonplace around the turn of the millennium. Since then these highly intriguing structures have been at the center of multi-disciplinary research, bridging the fields of nanotechnology, chemistry, physics, biology, medicine and imaging and, more recently, pioneering the field of synthetic biology. As structures they offer greater control into understanding the relationship between amphiphile properties and membrane curvature. Moreover, as delivery vectors for therapeutic and diagnostic compounds they enable greater efficiency of current therapies and targeted delivery. With the rising costs of both healthcare and drug development, polymersomes and nanomedicine are well placed to combat these modern-day problems. This chapter provides an overview of the approaches to prepare and to characterize polymersomes as well as their applications in biomedicine, highlighting recent achievements in the stimuli-responsive drug delivery field.

Self-assembled block copolymer-nanoparticle hybrids: interplay between enthalpy and entropy

The dispersion of nanoparticles in ordered block copolymer nanostructures can provide control over particle location and orientation, and pave the way for engineered nanomaterials that have enhanced mechanical, electrical, or optical properties. Fundamental questions pertaining to the role of enthalpic and entropic particle-polymer interactions remain open and motivate the present work. We consider here a system of 10.6 nm silica nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed in ordered cylinders formed by hydrated poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide) block copolymers (Pluronic P105: EO(37)PO(56)EO(37)). Protonation of silica was used to vary the NP-polymer enthalpic interactions, while polar organic solvents (glycerol, DMSO, ethanol, and DMF) were used to modulate the NP-polymer entropic interactions. The introduction of deprotonated NPs in the place of an equal mass of water did not affect the lattice parameter of the PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymer hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystalline structures. However, the dispersion of protonated NPs led to an increase in the lattice parameter, which was attributed to stronger NP-polymer hydrogen bonding (enthalpic) interactions. Dispersion of protonated NPs into cylindrical structures formed by Pluronic P105 in 80/20 water/organic solvents does not influence the lattice parameter, different from the case of protonated NP in plain water. Organic solvents appear to screen the NP-polymer hydrogen bonding interactions.

Structure of nanoparticles embedded in micellar polycrystals

We investigate by scattering techniques the structure of water-based soft composite materials comprising a crystal made of Pluronic block-copolymer micelles arranged in a face-centered cubic lattice and a small amount (at most 2% by volume) of silica nanoparticles, of size comparable to that of the micelles. The copolymer is thermosensitive: it is hydrophilic and fully dissolved in water at low temperature (T ~ 0 °C), and self-assembles into micelles at room temperature, where the block-copolymer is amphiphilic. We use contrast matching small-angle neuron scattering experiments to independently probe the structure of the nanoparticles and that of the polymer. We find that the nanoparticles do not perturb the crystalline order. In addition, a structure peak is measured for the silica nanoparticles dispersed in the polycrystalline samples. This implies that the samples are spatially heterogeneous and comprise, without macroscopic phase separation, silica-poor and silica-rich regions. We show that the nanoparticle concentration in the silica-rich regions is about 10-fold the average concentration. These regions are grain boundaries between crystallites, where nanoparticles concentrate, as shown by static light scattering and by light microscopy imaging of the samples. We show that the temperature rate at which the sample is prepared strongly influence the segregation of the nanoparticles in the grain-boundaries.
