Abstract
Cp*Ir(iii) complexes have been shown to be effective for the halogenation of N,N-diisopropylbenzamides with N-halosuccinimide as a suitable halogen source. The optimized conditions for the iodination reaction consist of 0.5 mol% [Cp*IrCl2]2 in 1,2-dichloroethane at 60 °C for 1 h to form a variety of iodinated benzamides in high yields. Increasing the catalyst loading to 6 mol% and the time to 4 h enabled the bromination reaction of the same substrates. Reactivity was not observed for the chlorination of these substrates. A variety of functional groups on the para-position of the benzamide were well tolerated. Kinetic studies showed the reaction dependence is first order in iridium, positive order in benzamide, and zero order in N-iodosuccinimide. A KIE of 2.5 was obtained from an independent H/D kinetic isotope effect study. Computational studies (DFT-BP3PW91) indicate that a CMD mechanism is more likely than an oxidative addition pathway for the C-H bond activation step. The calculated functionalization step involves an Ir(v) species that is the result of oxidative addition of acetate hypoiodite that is generated in situ from N-iodosuccinimide and acetic acid.

Abstract
The highly electrophilic, coordinatively unsaturated, 16-electron [Ru(P(OH)3)(dppe)2][OTf]2 (dppe = Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2) complex 1 activates the H-H, the Si-H, and the B-H bonds, in H2(g), EtMe2SiH and Et3SiH, and H3B.L (L = PMe3, PPh3), respectively, in a heterolytic fashion. The heterolysis of H2 involves an eta2-H2 complex (observable at low temperatures), whereas the computations indicate that those of the Si-H and the B-H bonds proceed through unobserved eta1-species. The common ruthenium-containing product in these reactions is trans-[Ru(H)(P(OH)3)(dppe)2][OTf], 2. The [Ru(P(OH)3)(dppe)2][OTf]2 complex is unique with regard to activating the H-H, the Si-H, and the B-H bonds in a heterolytic manner. These reactions and the heterolytic activation of the C-H bond in methane by the model complex [Ru(POH)3)(H2PCH2CH2PH2)2][Cl][OTf], 4, have been investigated using computational methods as well, at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level. While the model complex activates the H-H, the Si-H, and the B-H bonds in H2, SiH4, and H3B.L (L = PMe3, PPh3), respectively, with a low barrier, activation of the C-H bond in CH4 involves a transition state of 57.5 kcal/mol high in energy. The inability of the ruthenium complex to activate CH4 is due to the undue stretching of the C-H bond needed at the transition state, in comparison to the other substrates.

Abstract
Reaction of the dimer [(Cp*IrCl)2(P-Cl)2] with chiral pyridylamino ligands (pyam, L1-L5) in the presence of NaSbF6 gave complexes [Cp*IrCl(pyam)][SbF6] 1-5 as diastereomeric mixtures, which have been fully characterised, including the X-ray molecular structure determination of the complexes (S(Ir),R(N),R(C))-[Cp*IrClL1][SbF6] 1a and (R(Ir),S(N),S(C))-[Cp*IrClL5][SbF6] 5a. Treatment of these cations with AgSbF6 affords the corresponding aqua species [Cp*Ir(pyam)(H2O)][SbF6]2 6-10 which have been also fully characterised. The molecular structure of the complex (S(Ir),R(N),R(C))-[Cp*IrL,(H2O)][SbF6]2 6 has been determined by X-ray diffractometric methods. The aqua complexes [Cp*Ir(pyam)(H2O)][SbF6]2 (6, pyam = L2 (7), L3 (8)) evolve to the cyclometallated species [Cp*Ir{kappa3(N,N',C)-(R)-(C6H4)CH(CH3)NHCH2C5NH4}][SbF6] (11), [Cp*Ir{kappa3(N,N',C)-(R)-(C10H6)CH(CH3)-NHCH2C5NH4)}][SbF6] (12), and [Cp*Ir{kappa3(N,N',C)-(R)-(C10H6)CH(CH3)NHCH2C9NH6)}][SbF6] (13) respectively, via intramolecular activation of an ortho C-H aryl bond. Complexes 6-10 are enantioselective catalysts for the Diels-Alder reaction between methacrolein and cyclopentadiene. Reaction occurs rapidly at room temperature with good exo : endo selectivity (from 81 : 19 to 98 : 2) and moderate enantioselectivity (up to 72%). The involved intermediate Lewis acid-dienophile compounds [Cp*Ir(pyam)(methacrolein)][SbF]2 (pyam = L4 (14), L5 (15)) have been isolated and characterised.

Abstract
The imidazolium salts [3-R1-1-{2-Ar-imino)-2-R2-ethyl}imidazolium] chloride (C-N; Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3; R1/R2 = Me/Me (a), Me/Ph (b), Ph/Me (c), 2,4,6-Me3C6H2 (d), 2,6-iPr2C6H3 (e)) react with Ag(2)O to give Ag(I) iminocarbene complexes (C-N)AgCl (4a-e) in which the iminocarbene ligand is bonded to Ag via the imidazoline-2-ylidene carbon atom. The solid-state structures of 4b and 4d were determined by X-ray crystallography and revealed the presence of monomeric (carbene)AgCl units with Z and E configurations at the imine C=N bonds, respectively. Carbene transfer to Pd occurs when compounds 4b-e are treated with (COD)PdCl2 to yield bis(carbene) complexes (C-N)2PdCl2 (6b-e) containing two kappa1-C bonded iminocarbene moieties. NMR spectroscopic data indicated a trans coordination geometry at Pd. This conclusion was supported by an X-ray structure determination of 6b which clearly demonstrated the non-chelating nature of the iminocarbene ligand system. EXSY 1H NMR spectroscopy suggests that the non-chelating structures undergo E/Z isomerization at the imine C[double bond, length as m-dash]N double bonds in solution. The preparative results contrast our earlier report that the reaction between 4a and (COD)PdCl2 results in a chelating kappa2-C,N bonded iminocarbene complex (C-N)PdCl2. The coordination mode and dynamic behavior of the iminocarbene ligand systems have been found to be dramatically affected by changes in the substitution pattern of the ligand system. Sterically unencumbered systems (a) favor the formation of kappa2-C,N chelate structures containing one iminocarbene moiety per metal upon coordination at Pd(II); these complexes were demonstrated to engage in reversible, solvent-mediated chelate ring-opening reactions. Sterically encumbered systems (b-e) form non-chelating kappa1-C iminocarbene Pd(II) complexes containing two iminocarbene ligands per metal. Transannular repulsions across the chelate ring are believed to be the origin of these structural differences.
