Abstract
The direct dehydrogenation of alkanes is among the most efficient ways to access valuable alkene products. Although several catalysts have been designed to promote this transformation, they have unfortunately found limited applications in fine chemical synthesis. Here, we report a conceptually novel strategy for the catalytic, intermolecular dehydrogenation of alkanes using a ruthenium catalyst. The combination of a redox-active ligand and a sterically hindered aryl radical intermediate has unleashed this novel strategy. Importantly, mechanistic investigations have been performed to provide a conceptual framework for the further development of this new catalytic dehydrogenation system.

Abstract
A series of cationic Ru(ii)(η6-p-cymene) complexes with thioether-functionalised N-heterocyclic carbene ligands have been prepared and fully characterized. Steric and electronic influence of the R thioether substituent on the coordination of the sulfur atom was investigated. The molecular structure of three of them has been determined by means of X-ray diffractrometry and confirmed the bidentate (κ2-C,S) coordination mode of the ligand. Interestingly, only a single diastereomer, as an enantiomeric couple, was observed in the solid state for complexes 1c, 1i and 1j. DFT calculations established a low energy inversion barrier between the two diastereomers through a sulfur pyramidal inversion pathway with R donating group while a dissociative/associative mechanism is more likely with R substituents that contain electron withdrawing group, thus suggesting that the only species observed by the 1H-NMR correspond to an average resonance position of a fluxional mixtures of isomers. All these complexes were found to catalyse the oxydant-free double dehydrogenation of primary amine into nitrile. Ru complex bearing NHC-functionalised S-tBu group was further investigated in a wide range of amines and was found more selective for alkyl amine substrates than for benzylamine derivatives. Finally, preliminary results of the biological effects on various human cancer cells of four selected Ru complexes are reported.

Abstract
Cobalt nanoparticles modified with N-doped hierarchical porous carbon derived from biomass are found to be a highly efficient, reusable heterogeneous catalyst for the coupling of nitroarenes with alcohols, selectively affording imines and amines via the borrowing hydrogen strategy for the first time. The product selectivity between imine and amine may be precisely tuned by simple alteration of the reaction conditions without changing the catalyst in one reaction system. In this study, a broad set of complex imines and amines was successfully synthesized in good to high yields with various functional groups tolerated for both nitroarenes and alcohols, highlighting the potentially practical utility of the protocol. This heterogeneous catalyst can be easily removed from the reaction medium by external magnet and can be reused at least four times without significant loss in activity and selectivity.

Abstract
Novel catalysis involving phosphonomethylation of N-methylaniline and asymmetric cyclopropylphosphonation reactions of N,N-diethylaniline derivatives with diazomethylphosphonates are reported. Optically active cyclopropylphosphonate derivatives were directly synthesized from diazomethylphosphonates and N,N-diethylaniline derivatives catalyzed by a Ru(II)-Pheox complex in one step in good yields and high diastereoselectivities (up to trans/ cis = > 99:1<) and enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee). D-labeling mechanistic studies of phosphonomethylation and cyclopropylphosphonation suggested that an enamine or iminium intermediate was generated in the reaction process.

Abstract
Cu-containing activated carbon (eco-catalyst, Cu/HMPC, where ‘C’ defines ‘carbon’) was derived from a metal-hyperaccumulating mustard plant (HMP) by a simple chemical activation method. Transmission electron microscopy/selected area diffraction (HRTEM/SAED) results revealed that the Cu/HMPC has mainly three types of morphology [sheet-like morphology (2D), hollow-spheres (3D) and needle-like structures (1D)] which are interconnected. HRTEM-SAED, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results confirmed the existence of Cu oxide species in Cu/HMPC. Content of Cu in Cu/HMPC was determined to be 1.03 wt%. The quality of graphitization in Cu/HMPC was discussed by using Raman and XRD results. The BET surface area of Cu/HMPC was determined to be 620.8 m2 g−1. The Cu/HMPC actively transformed a wide range of amines to imines under very mild reaction conditions. The catalyst Cu/HMPC gave products in excellent yields (98–61%) with very high TON/TOF values (1512/339–833/35 h−1). To the best of our knowledge, this is the most efficient Cu-based heterogeneous eco-catalyst for the synthesis of imines among those reported to date. The Cu can be recovered from used Cu/HMPC by a simple HCl treatment. Versatility, heterogeneity and reusability of Cu/HMPC were tested. A possible mechanism has been proposed. Cu/HMPC eco-catalyst with unique interconnected 1D/2D/3D morphology was derived from metal-hyperaccumulating mustard plant for highly efficient and selective coupling reactions.![]()

Abstract
The first o-iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX) mediated oxidation of unactivated amines to imines is described. A range of meso-pyrrolidines were shown to be suitable substrates. The chemical space was further explored with one-pot oxidative Ugi-type and aza-Friedel-Crafts reactions, which proved to be highly diastereoselective.

Abstract
Hydrometallation of iPr2 N-Ge(CMe3 )(C≡C-CMe3 )2 with H-M(CMe3 )2 (M=Al, Ga) affords alkenyl-alkynylgermanes in which the Lewis-acidic metal atoms are not coordinated by the amino N atoms but by the α-C atoms of the ethynyl groups. These interactions result in a lengthening of the Ge-C bonds by approximately 10 pm and a comparably strong deviation of the Ge-CC angle from linearity (154.3(1)°). This unusual behaviour may be caused by steric shielding of the N atoms. Coordination of the metal atoms by the amino groups is observed upon hydrometallation of Et2 N-Ge(C6 H5 )(C≡C-CMe3 )2 , bearing a smaller NR2 group. Strong M-N interactions lead to a lengthening of the Ge-N bonds by 10 to 15 pm and a strong deviation of the M atoms from the MC3 plane by 52 and 47 pm, for Al and Ga, respectively. Dual hydrometallation is achieved only with HAl(CMe3 )2 . In the product, there is a strong Al-N bond with converging Al-N and Ge-N distances (208 vs. 200 pm) and an interaction of the second Al atom to the phenyl group. Addition of chloride anions terminates the latter interaction while the activated Ge-N bond undergoes an unprecedented elimination of EtN=C(H)Me at room temperature, leading to a germane with a Ge-H bond. State-of-the-art DFT calculations reveal that the unique mechanism comprises the transfer of the amino group from Ge to Al to yield an intermediate germyl cation as a strong Lewis acid, which induces β-hydride elimination, with chloride binding being crucial for providing the thermodynamic driving force.

Abstract
The unimolecular chemistry of the [Zn(Pro-H)(Pro)](+) complex following collisional or infrared multiple photon activation was studied, and interestingly was found to lose H2 as one of the main dissociation pathways. Furthermore a second dehydrogenation step, forming [Zn(Pro-H)(Pro)-2H2](+), was also observed. When proline was substituted for sarcosine, also a secondary amine, a single dehydrogenation was observed. In contrast, [Zn(Gly-H)(Gly)](+) and [Zn(Ala-H)(Ala)](+) were found to lose H2O as their primary fragmentation route with no dehydrogenation observed. Tandem mass spectrometry, deuterium substitution, and infrared spectroscopy were used to determine the origin of the H atoms in the losses of H2, as well as for other fragmentation routes, including the loss of H2O. The hydrogen atoms for H2 loss from [Zn(Pro-H)(Pro)](+) was found to originate on the amine group and primarily from C5 on the non-deprotonated proline, with a smaller contribution from the C2 hydrogen. Both hydrogens for H2O loss were determined to be from labile hydrogens. Potential energy surfaces were computed for the H2 loss and H2O loss routes for both [Zn(Pro-H)(Pro)](+) and [Zn(Gly-H)(Gly)](+) and were compared. For [Zn(Pro-H)(Pro)](+), H2 loss was found to be the pathway with the lower energy requirement than for H2O loss, and the opposite was found for [Zn(Gly-H)(Gly)](+). The greater basicities of proline and sarcosine are most likely responsible for stabilizing the 3 coordinate Zn(2+) transition states en route to H2 loss, compared to those complexes formed with the much less basic glycine or alanine.

Abstract
The first α-alkylation of unactivated amides with primary alcohols is described. An effective and robust iridium pincer complex has been developed for selective α-alkylation of tertiary and secondary acetamides involving a "borrowing hydrogen" methodology. The method is compatible with alcohols bearing various functional groups. This presents a convenient and environmentally benign protocol for α-alkylation of amides.
