Abstract
Abstract
A novel class of aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) formed by zwitterions (ZI) has been investigated in the present work. A series of water soluble ZIs have been synthesized using triethylamine, N-Methylimidazole, N-Vinylimidazole, pyridine, N-Methylpyrrolidine, N-Ethylpiperidine and 1,4 butane sultone. The synthesized ZIs were explored for their ability to form biphasic systems in combination with aqueous inorganic salt solutions of K3PO4, K2HPO4 and K2CO3. The phase diagrams for all systems have been constructed through cloud point titration method at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. The phase behavior of ZI based ABS have been analyzed to understand the structural effects of ZIs as well as the effect of nature of salt used on the overall phase formation. Further the temperature dependence of the ZI based ABS was also explored by studying the phase behavior at variable temperatures of 298.15, 308.15 and 318.15 K. In order to estimate the applicability of proposed ZI based ABS, extraction experiments have been performed for an alkaloid i.e. caffeine for all synthesized ZIs with K3PO4 and at 298.15 K. ZI based ABS have been found to be capable of single step extraction of caffeine similar to IL based ABS thus providing the possibilities to explore these ZI based ABS as efficient extraction and separation systems.

Abstract
The ability to induce reversible phase transitions between homogeneous solutions and biphasic liquid-liquid systems, at pre-defined and suitable operating temperatures, is of crucial relevance in the design of separation processes. Ionic-liquid-based aqueous biphasic systems (IL-based ABS) have demonstrated superior performance as alternative extraction platforms, and their thermoreversible behaviour is here disclosed by the use of protic ILs. The applicability of the temperature-induced phase switching is further demonstrated with the complete extraction of two value-added proteins, achieved in a single-step. It is shown that these temperature-induced mono(bi)phasic systems are significantly more versatile than classical liquid-liquid systems which are constrained by their critical temperatures. IL-based ABS allow to work in a wide range of temperatures and compositions which can be tailored to fit the requirements of a given separation process.

Abstract
Vegetable oils and fatty acid esters are suitable precursor molecules for the production of a variety of bio-based products and materials, such as paints and coatings, plastics, soaps, lubricants, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, printing inks, surfactants, and biofuels. Here, we report the possibility of using Lewis acidic ionic liquids (ILs) to obtain polyunsaturated ester dimerization-oligomerization and/or, in the presence of another terminal alkene (propene), co-polymerization. In particular, we have tested the Lewis acidic mixtures arising from the addition of a proper amount of GaCl3 (Χ > 0.5) to two chloride-based (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [bmim]Cl, and 1-butylisoquinolium chloride, [BuIsoq]Cl) or by dissolution of a smaller amount of Al(Tf2N)3 (Χ = 0.1) in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [bmim][Tf2N]. On the basis of product distribution studies, [bmim][Tf2N]/Al(Tf2N)3 appears the most suitable medium in which methyl linoleate alkylation with propene can compete with methyl linoleate or propene oligomerization.
