Regioselective aerobic oxidation of bis-sulfides into monosulfoxides

Aerobic Oxidation Reactivity of Well-Defined Cobalt(II) and Cobalt(III) Aminophenol Complexes

This paper describes the synthesis and reactivity studies of three cobalt complexes bearing aminophenol-derived ligands without nitrogen substitution: Co^II(^tBu2APH)₂(^tBu2AP)₂ (1), Co^III₂(^tBu2APH)₂(^tBu2AP)₂(μ-^tBu2BAP)₂ (2), and Co^III(^tBu2AP)₃ (3), where ^tBu2APH = 2-amino-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol, ^tBu2AP = 2-amino-4,6-di-tert-butylphenolate, and μ-^tBu2BAP = bridging 2-amido-4,6-di-tert-butylphenolate. Stoichiometric reactivity studies of these well-defined complexes demonstrate the catalytic competency of both cobalt(II) and cobalt(III) complexes in the aerobic oxidative cyclization of ^tBu2APH with tert-butylisonitrile. Reactions with O₂ reveal the aerobic oxidation of the cobalt(II) complex 1 to generate the cobalt(III) species 2 and 3. UV-visible time-course studies and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy indicate that this oxidation proceeds through a ligand-based radical intermediate. These studies represent the first example of well-defined cobalt aminophenol complexes that participate in catalytic aerobic oxidation reactions and highlight a key role for a ligand radical in the oxidation sequence.

Catalytic activities of heterogeneous catalysts obtained by copolymerization of metal-containing 2-(acetoacetoxy)ethyl methacrylate

Among the synthetic strategies commonly used for supporting a metal complex onto an organic polymer in order to obtain an heterogenous catalyst, a valid choice is to synthesize a metal containing monomer (MCM), which can subsequently be subjected to polymerization with suitable comonomers and crosslinkers, achieving a supported transition metal catalyst as a metal-containing polymer (MCP). In this context, during the last two decades, we explored the use of 2-(acetoacetoxy)ethyl methacrylate (HAAEMA) as a ligand to prepare several MCMs for the relevant MCPs. In this review we summarize and discuss our developments in the studies of the catalytic activity of these “hybrid” catalysts. These catalysts have demonstrated high efficiency and/or excellent selectivity in several kinds of chemical reactions and very often they could be recovered and reused in multiple cycles maintaining their activity and selectivity without suffering from appreciable metal leaching.

Aerobic oxidation of methyl p-tolyl sulfide catalyzed by a remarkably labile heteroscorpionate RuII-aqua complex, fac-[RuII(H2O)(dpp)(tppm)]2+

fac-[RuII(Cl)(dpp)(L3)]+ (L3 = tris(pyrid-2-yl)methoxymethane (tpmm) = [1A]+ and tris(pyrid-2-yl)pentoxymethane (tppm) = [1B]+ and dpp = di(pyrazol-1-yl)propane) rapidly undergo ligand substitution with water to form fac-[RuII(H2O)(dpp)(L3)]2+ (L3 = tpmm = [2A]2+ and tppm = [2B]2+). In the structure of [2A]2+, the distorted octahedral arrangement of ligands around Ru is evident by a long Ru(1)-O(40) of 2.172(3) A and a large angle O(40)-Ru(1)-N(51) of 96.95(14) degrees . The remarkably short distance between O(40) of H2O and H(45a) of dpp confirms the heteroscorpionate ligand effect of dpp on H2O. [2B]2+ aerobically catalyzes methyl p-tolyl sulfide to methyl p-tolyl sulfoxide in 1,2-dichlorobenzene at 25.0 +/- 0.1 degrees C under 11.4 psi of O2. Experimental facts in support of this aerobic sulfide oxidation are the absence of H2O2 and the oxidative reactivity of the putative Ru(IV)-oxo intermediate toward methyl p-tolyl sulfide, 2-propanol, and allyl alcohol. This study provides the first documented example of aerobic-sulfide oxidation catalyzed by the remarkably labile heteroscorpionate Ru(II)-aqua complex without the formation of a highly reactive peroxide as an intermediate.
