Complex formation in the indolo[2,3-b]quinolines--methylene blue systems in aqueous solutions

Association of star-shaped poly(D,L-lactide)s containing nucleobase multiple hydrogen bonding

A new family of associating polymers based on four-arm, star-shaped poly(D,L-lactide) (PDLLA) containing peripheral complementary hydrogen-bonding sites is described. Hydroxy-terminated, four-arm, star-shaped PDLLAs of controlled molar mass were functionalized with complementary DNA base pairs, adenine (A) and thymine (T), to obtain PDLLA-A and PDLLA-T, respectively. 1H NMR spectroscopy confirmed quantitative functionalization and the subsequent formation of PDLLA-A and PDLLA-T hydrogen-bonded complexes. Job's analysis revealed a 1:1 optimal stoichiometry for the hydrogen-bonded complexes, and the association constant (Ka) that was determined using the 1H NMR-based Benesi-Hildebrand treatment was 84 M(-1) for the low molar mass complementary polymers. Furthermore, the PDLLA-based hydrogen-bonded complexes exhibited higher solution viscosities compared to the corresponding non-hydrogen-bonded precursors, which further confirmed strong complementary multiple-hydrogen-bonding associations between the star-shaped polymers with terminal adenine and thymine groups. Moreover, variable-temperature 1H NMR studies demonstrated the thermoreversibility of the hydrogen-bonded PDLLA-based complexes in solution.

Stability and conformation of the complexes of riboflavin with aromatic hydroxy compounds in an aqueous medium

Overall equilibrium constants K' for the formation of molecular complexes of riboflavin with the conjugate forms of different aromatic hydroxy compounds are greater in magnitude than those involving the protonated forms of the hydroxy compounds. There is good agreement between the K(B) values determined by using absorption and emission methods. Based on the magnitude of K(B), it is possible to differentiate between the donor capacities of the hydroxy compounds in the charge transfer complexes with riboflavin. Molecular modeling studies indicate stacking interactions for all the systems in an aqueous medium.

Studies on the riboflavin-resorcinol interaction in an aqueous medium and its pH dependence

The equilibrium constants, K', for the formation of the molecular association complex between riboflavin and resorcinol in the pH range 6-8 were found to be in the range 5-25 mol(-1)dm(3) by difference absorption spectroscopy. The equilibrium constants from emission spectroscopy were estimated to be in the range 38-55 mol(-1)dm(3) over the same pH range. Both sets of K' show a remarkable dependence on pH. The equilibrium constants K(A) and K(B) describing the interaction of riboflavin with neutral and ionic forms of resorcinol, respectively, obtained by resolving K', shows that K(B) is much greater than K(A). Molecular modeling studies suggest a stacked conformation of the two components in the complexed form. The interaction energies obtained from modeling studies also suggest a stronger interaction between the ionic form of resorcinol and riboflavin.

Evaluation of the parameters of 1:1 charge transfer complexes from spectrophotometric data by non-linear numerical method

The non-linear numerical method for evaluation of equilibrium constants and molar extinction coefficients of molecular complexes from a spectrophotometric experiment is described, which in contrast to linear models has no limitations with respect to concentrations of the components. The proposed procedure is applied to donor-acceptor interaction in solution between N-ethyl carbazole (EtCz) and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) or n-hexyl 2,5,7-trinitro-9-dicyanomethylenefluorene-4-carboxylate (HexDTFC) to evaluate the method and to obtain the parameters of charge transfer complexes (CTCs) formation. Association constants (K) and molar extinction coefficients (epsilon) of CTCs derived from non-linear approach (EtCz-TCNQ: K = 2.49+0.19 M(-1); epsilon = 2950 +/- 160 M(-1) cm(-1). EtCz-HexDTFC: K = 12.1 +/- 0.3 M(-1); epsilon = 1335 +/- 24 M(-1) cm(-1)) are close to that from linear models but show lower standard errors in parameter estimations.
