[(η6-p-PriC6H4Me)2Ru2Mo2O6(OMe)4]: a new tetranuclear mixed-metal oxo cluster presenting a cube-based chair structure

Propane-1,3-diammonium molybdate

The reaction between equimolar amounts of propane-1,3-diamine and molybdenum trioxide in water led to the formation of single crystals of the title salt, (C3H12N2)[MoO4]. The asymmetric unit is comprised of one propane-1,3-diammonium cation and one molybdate anion. The latter is isolated in the structure and has a slightly distorted tetrahedral configuration. An extensive network of N—H...O hydrogen bonds connects anions and cations, giving rise to a compact three-dimensional packing.

Polyoxomolybdate-stabilized Ru(0) nanoparticles deposited on mesoporous silica as catalysts for aromatic hydrogenation

We use polyoxometalates as precursors for the preparation of heterogeneous catalysts. In the starting molecular precursor [{Ru(C6Me6)}(2)Mo5O18{Ru(C6Me6)(H2O)}], three ruthenium arene fragments are supported on a formally lacunary Lindqvist-type polyoxomolybdate. This species was introduced by incipient wetness impregnation into the porosity of a SBA-15-type mesoporous silica. The evolution of the system under reducing atmosphere is followed by several methods, such as temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), Raman, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The results indicate that the polyoxometalate structure is retained after grafting on silica and allows the stabilization of Ru(0) nanoparticles after reduction. The resulting system exhibits interesting catalytic activity in benzene hydrogenation.

Organoruthenium derivative of the cyclic [H7P8W48O184]33? anion: [{K(H2O)}3{Ru(p-cymene)(H2O)}4P8W49O186(H2O)2]27?

Reaction of [Ru(p-cymene)Cl2]2 with [H7P8W48O184]33- (P8W48) in aqueous acidic medium results in the organometallic derivative [{K(H2O)}3{Ru(p-cymene)(H2O)}4P8W49O186(H2O)2]27- (1); in addition to the four {Ru(p-cymene)(H2O)} units, an unusual WO6 group with four equatorial, terminal ligands is also grafted to the crown-shaped P8W48 precursor.

Synthesis and reactivity of {Ru(p-cymene)}2+derivatives of [Nb6O19]8−: a rational approach towards fluxional organometallic derivatives of polyoxometalates

Three {Ru(p-cym)}(2+) (p-cym = p-cymene) derivatives of [Nb(6)O(19)](8-)-[Nb(6)O(19){Ru(p-cym)}](6-) (Nb(6)Ru(1)), trans-[Nb(6)O(19){Ru(p-cym)}(2)](4-) (t-Nb6Ru2), and [Nb(6)O(19){Ru(p-cym)}(4)] (Nb(6)Ru(4))--have been synthesized in water by reaction between [Ru(p-cym)Cl(2)](2) and the hexaniobate. In the solid state, Nb(6)Ru(1) and Nb(6)Ru(4) have been characterized by IR and EDX spectroscopies, whereas t-Nb(6)Ru(2) has been characterized by IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (crystal data for K(4)-trans-[Nb(6)O(19){Ru(p-cym)}(2)].14H(2)O (K(4)-t-Nb(6)Ru(2).14H(2)O). In solution, all compounds were characterized by (1)H NMR and ESI mass spectrometry analyses, and Nb(6)Ru(1) was also analyzed by (17)O NMR. These studies allowed a comparison of the differences in behaviour of the three complexes in water: Nb(6)Ru(1) is particularly stable, Nb(6)Ru(4) decomposes by loss of {Ru(p-cym)}(2+) fragments, and trans-[Nb(6)O(19){Ru(p-cym)}(2)](4-) isomerizes into cis-[Nb(6)O(19){Ru(p-cym)}(2)](4-). A rational mechanism for the isomerisation of t-Nb(6)Ru(2) is proposed on the basis of a kinetic study.

Dilacunary Decatungstates Functionalized by Organometallic Ruthenium(II), [{Ru(C6H6)(H2O)}{Ru(C6H6)}(γ-XW10O36)]4- (X = Si, Ge)

The benzene-Ru(II)-supported dilacunary decatungstosilicate [{Ru(C6H6)(H2O)}{Ru(C6H6)}(gamma-SiW10O36)]4- and the isostructural decatungstogermanate [{Ru(C6H6)(H2O)}{Ru(C6H6)}(gamma-GeW10O36)]4- have been synthesized and characterized by multinuclear solution NMR, IR, elemental analysis, and electrochemistry. Single-crystal X-ray analysis was carried out on K4[{Ru(C6H6)(H2O)}{Ru(C6H6)}(gamma-SiW10O36)].9H2O (K-1), which crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Pmn2(1), with a = 13.6702(3) A, b = 16.2419(4) A, c = 12.1397(2) A, and Z = 2, and on K4[{Ru(C6H6)(H2O)}{Ru(C6H6)}(gamma-GeW10O36)].7H2O (K-2), which also crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Pmn2(1), with a = 13.6684(12) A, b = 16.297(2) A, c = 12.1607(13) A, and Z = 2. Polyanions 1 and 2 consist of a Ru(C6H6)(H2O) group and a Ru(C6H6) group linked to a dilacunary (gamma-XW10O36) Keggin fragment resulting in an assembly with idealized Cs symmetry. The Ru(C6H6)(H2O) group is bound at the lacunary polyanion site via two Ru-O(W) bonds, whereas the Ru(C6H6) group is bound on the side via three Ru-O(W) bonds. Polyanions 1 and 2 were synthesized in aqueous acidic medium at pH 2.5 by the reaction of [Ru(C6H6)Cl2]2 with [gamma-SiW10O36]8- and [gamma-GeW10O36]8-, respectively. The formal potentials are roughly the same for the first W waves of 1 and 2. However, important differences appear for the second W waves. These observations indicate different acid-base properties for the reduced forms of 1 and 2. Three oxidation processes were detected: the oxidation of the Ru center is followed first by irreversible electrocatalytic processes of the Ru-benzene moiety and then of the electrolyte. Comparison of this behavior with that of the precursor reagent, [Ru(C6H6)Cl2]2, was useful to understand the main oxidation processes. A ligand substitution reaction was observed upon addition of dimethyl sulfoxide (dmso) to 1, 2, or [Ru(C6H6)Cl2]2. This reaction facilitates substantially the oxidation of the Ru center. The dmso was oxidized with large electrocatalytic currents more efficiently in the presence of 1 and 2 than with [Ru(C6H6)Cl2]2.

Trilacunary Heteropolytungstates Functionalized by Organometallic Ruthenium(II), [(RuC6H6)2XW9O34]6- (X = Si, Ge)

The benzene-Ru(II)-supported trilacunary heteropolytungstates [(RuC6H6)2XW9O34]6- (X = Si, 1; Ge, 2) have been synthesized and characterized by multinuclear solution NMR (183W, 13C, 1H, 29Si), UV-vis and IR spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and elemental analysis. Single-crystal X-ray analysis was carried out on Rb2Na4[(RuC6H6)2SiW9O34].21H2O (RbNa-1), which crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group P, with a = 11.9415(2) A, b = 13.3123(2) A, c = 19.4927(4) A, alpha = 96.6460(10) degrees , beta = 95.1570(10) degrees , gamma = 98.2560(10) degrees , and Z = 2 and on Cs2Na4[(RuC6H6)2GeW9O34].19.5H2O (CsNa-2), which crystallizes also in the triclinic system, space group P, with a = 11.930(4) A, b = 13.353(4) A, c = 19.586(6) A, alpha = 95.982(5) degrees , beta = 95.414(6) degrees , gamma = 98.142(5) degrees , and Z = 2. The novel polyanion structure consists of two (RuC6H6) units linked to a trilacunary (XW9O34) Keggin fragment via Ru-O(W) and Ru-O(X) bonds resulting in an assembly with Cs symmetry. Polyanions 1 and 2 were synthesized by reaction of [RuC6H6Cl2]2 with [A-alpha-XW9O34]10- in aqueous buffer medium (pH 6.0). Both 1 and 2 are stable in solution as indicated by the expected 5-line pattern (2:1:2:2:2) in the 183W NMR and the expected (3C, 1H, and 29Si spectra. Descriptions of the respective electrochemical behaviors of the W centers and the Ru centers in 1 and 2 are given in media where these processes are clearly defined. In a pH = 3 acetate medium, the cyclic voltammetry of the W centers shows the known fingerprint of the trilacunary alpha-[XW9O34]n- (X = Ge, Si) moieties. The presence of the (RuC6H6) substituents imparts a good stability to these fragments in solution. Stepwise oxidation of the Ru centers was suspected in pH = 5 acetate medium, but only the first step was well-separated from a large current composite wave. The stepwise oxidation was finally observed clearly in a DMF-water (90/10 v/v) mixture and shows two well-behaved Ru oxidation processes. A short comparison is made with DMSO-bearing Ru polyoxometalates.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Photochemical Behavior of {Ru(arene)}2+ Derivatives of α-[PW11O39]7-: An Organometallic Way to Ruthenium-Substituted Heteropolytungstates

Reaction of [Ru(arene)Cl(2)](2) (arene = benzene, toluene, p-cymene, hexamethylbenzene) with K(7)[PW(11)O(39)].14H(2)O provided two series of organometallic derivatives of heteropolytungstates: type-1 and type-2 complexes of general formulas [PW(11)O(39){Ru(arene)(H(2)O)}](5-) and [{PW(11)O(39){Ru(arene)}}(2){WO(2)}](8-), respectively. All compounds were characterized by infrared and multinuclear NMR ((1)H, (31)P, (183)W) spectroscopies. The crystal structures of Na(4)K(4)[{PW(11)O(39){Ru(benzene)}}(2){WO(2)}].6H(2)O (NaK-2a.6H(2)O), K(7)H[{PW(11)O(39){Ru(toluene)}}(2){WO(2)}].4H(2)O (K-2b.4H(2)O), and Cs(3)K(2)[PW(11)O(39){Ru(p-cymene)(H(2)O)}].4H(2)O (CsK-1c.4H(2)O) were obtained and revealed that the {Ru(arene)} fragment is supported on the oxometallic framework. Photochemical reactivity of [PW(11)O(39){Ru(arene)(H(2)O)}](5-) (arene = toluene, p-cymene) in the presence of various ligands L (L = H(2)O, dimethyl sulfoxide, tetramethylene sulfoxide, and diphenyl sulfoxide) was investigated, and led to the formation of [PW(11)O(39){Ru(L)}](5-), in which the ruthenium is incorporated into the lacunary [PW(11)O(39)](7-) anion.

A new organometallic heteropolytungstate related to [Sb2W22O74(OH)2]12–: synthesis and structural characterisation of the bis-{Ru(p-cymene)}2+-containing anion [Sb2W20O70{Ru(p-cymene)}2]10–

The easy synthesis of [Sb2W20O70{Ru(p-cymene)}2](10-) by the reaction between the organometallic precursor [Ru(p-cymene)Cl2]2 and [Sb2W20O70]14-, formed in situ, confirms the importance of the organometallic route to well defined ruthenium(+II)-substituted heteropolytungstates.

Interplay of cubic building blocks in (et6-arene)ruthenium-containing tungsten and molybdenum oxides

A series of molybdenum and tungsten organometallic oxides containing [Ru(arene)]2+ units (arene =p-cymene, C6Me6) was obtained by condensation of [[Ru(arene)Cl2]2] with oxomolybdates and oxotungstates in aqueous or nonaqueous solvents. The crystal structures of [[Ru(eta6-C6Me6]]4W4O16], [[Ru(eta6-p-MeC6H4iPr]]4W2O10], [[[Ru-(eta6-p-MeC6H4iPr)]2(mu-OH)3]2][[Ru(eta6-p-MeC6H4iPr)]2W8O28(OH)2[Ru(eta6-p-MeC6H4iPr)(H2O)]2], and [[Ru(eta6-C6Me6)]2M5O18[Ru(eta6-C6Me6)(H2O)]] (M = Mo, W) have been determined. While the windmill-type clusters [[Ru(eta6-arene)]4(MO3)4(mu3-O)4] (M = Mo, W; arene =p-MeC6H4iPr, C6Me6), the face-sharing double cubane-type cluster [[Ru(eta6-p-MeC6H4iPr)]4(WO2)2(mu3-O)4(mu4-O)2], and the dimeric cluster [[Ru(eta6-p-MeC6H4iPr)(WO3)3(mu3-O)3(mu3-OH)Ru(eta6-pMeC6H4iPr)(H2O)]2(mu-WO2)2]2- are based on cubane-like units, [(Ru(eta6-C6Me6)]2M5O18[Ru(eta6-C6Me6)(H2O)]] (M = Mo, W) are more properly described as lacunary Lindqvist-type polyoxoanions supporting three ruthenium centers. Precubane clusters [[Ru(eta6-arene)](MO3)2(mu-O)3(mu3-O)]6- are possible intermediates in the formation of these clusters. The cluster structures are retained in solution, except for [[Ru(eta6-p-MeC6H4iPr)]4Mo4O16], which isomerizes to the triple-cubane form.
