[Intrathoracic gossypiboma interpreted as bronchogenic carcinoma. Another false positive with positron emission tomography]

Case report:18F-2-deoxy-2-fluoro-D-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography image findings of a dog with gossypiboma

A 13-year-old, spayed, female mixed breed dog that had previously undergone mastectomy and ovariohysterectomy was referred for evaluation of metastasis after surgery. 18F-deoxy-2-D-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET-CT) was performed and a soft-tissue mass was observed in the abdominal cavity. The characteristics of the abdominal mass were assessed and screening for metastasis was done with follow-up 18F-FDG PET scans. Uptake of 18F-deoxy-2-D-glucose was higher in the peripheral region and lower in the center of the abdominal mass. Exploratory laparotomy was performed, and the removed abdominal mass was consistent with a gossypiboma, which is a retained surgical sponge composed of non-absorbable material with cotton matrix. This case report describes the characteristics of 18F-FDG PET-CT imaging in a dog with an abdominal gossypiboma, which has not been reported in the veterinary literature before.

Unexpected autoptic finding in a sudden death: gossypiboma

Gossypiboma, i.e. a retained surgical sponge, is a serious and rare complication in surgical practice, most commonly occurring in abdominal procedures. Migration of retained surgical sponge is an unusual sequelae, particularly if occurring in tracheo-bronchial tree. Herein, we report a 35-year-old man who had had a retained surgical sponge forgotten during a radical thyroidectomy, and subsequently a trans-luminal migration of the gossypiboma which went through the trachea causing a sudden death of the patient. All the operators of the surgical team should keep in mind this terrible complication to avoid unpleasant consequences to patient and themselves.

Surgical intervention may not always be required in gossypiboma with intraluminal migration

Gossypiboma is the technical term for a retained surgical sponge. Because of legal-ethical concerns, there have not been many publications on this topic. Delays in diagnosis and treatment might increase mortality and morbidity. Radiological imaging is used in diagnosis. We present a case of gossypiboma that had fistulized to bulbous following hydatic cyst surgery. We established the diagnosis with endoscopy and followed its migration endoscopically.
