Abstract
Research investigating the correlation between human trace element levels and disease alterations is growing. Epilepsy, a common nervous system disease, has also been found to be closely related to abnormal levels of trace elements. Studies continue to explore mechanisms of various trace elements involved in epileptic seizures through experimental animal models of epilepsy. Thus, we reviewed the research progress on the correlation between trace element levels and epilepsy in recent years and found that the trace elements most closely related to epilepsy are mainly metal ions such as selenium, iron, copper, zinc, and manganese. These results indicate that the changes in some trace elements are closely related to the increase in epilepsy susceptibility. In addition, after treatment with drugs and a ketogenic diet, the concentration of trace elements in the serum of patients with epilepsy changes. In other words, the abnormality of trace element concentrations is of great significance in the occurrence and development of epilepsy. This article is a literature update on the potential role of trace element imbalance in the development of epilepsy, providing new references for the subsequent prevention and treatment of epilepsy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Autoimmune thyroid diseases, including Hashimoto's thyroiditis, are the most common ones among autoimmune diseases. The reported effects of selenium supplementation on the course of Hashimoto's thyroiditis are not consistent. It is therefore important to continue this line of research. DESIGN The participants received selenium in the form of sodium selenite(IV) at a dose of 100 µg/day for 6 months. PATIENTS Newly diagnosed and previously untreated Hashimoto's thyroiditis with euthyroidism or subclinical hypothyroidism. A total of 36 patients (aged 20 to 52 years) qualified for this study, of whom 29 women were successfully enrolled and completed the intervention. MEASUREMENTS Both before and after supplementation the following parameters in serum were tested: anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies, thyroid function indicators, selenium as well as antioxidant status parameters and other biochemical parameters (lipid profile, glucose). Iodine supply and subjective assessment of physical and psychological health were also monitored. RESULTS Selenium supplementation decreased significantly level of anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies what might have had a stabilizing effect on thyroid function, as values of thyroid parameters were within normal range before and at the end of the study. Mean level of selenium among patients was not different to healthy people in Poland. Median of ioduria was within normal range. CONCLUSIONS The study shows a potential way of protective effect of selenium in limiting development of overt hypothyroidism. The increase in the concentrations of Se and SELENOP in the serum of patients verifies successful supplementation and good compliance, but did not affect the antioxidant status parameters measured.

Abstract
PURPOSE Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) are assessed as oxidative stress markers to determine the impact of oxidation on the levels of GSH-Px and SOD in patients with epilepsy (PWE) and healthy controls. METHODS A meta-analysis was completed on twenty-nine published studies. A total of 636 PWE and 665 healthy controls, 303 PWE and 191 controls, and 22 PWE and 22 controls were included to study GSH-Px levels in erythrocytes, serum and plasma, respectively. For SOD studies, there were 610 PWE and 680 controls, 464 PWE and 382 controls, and 62 PWE with 77 controls for erythrocytes, serum and plasma, respectively. RESULTS Meta-analysis showed that the erythrocyte SOD level was significantly lower in PWE than in healthy controls (SMD =-1.96; 95% CI [-2.93, -0.99]; P<0.0001). Moreover, the meta-analysis demonstrated that in serum and plasma, SOD levels in PWE were significantly lower than those in healthy controls (SMD =-1.47; 95% CI [-2.47, -0.48]; P<0.0001). Erythrocyte GSH-Px levels had a tendency to decrease in PWE compared with healthy controls (SMD =-0.31; 95% CI [-1.48, 0.85]; P=0.598), but the results showed no significant difference. CONCLUSION Our results showed reduced SOD levels in erythrocytes, serum and plasma in PWE, which may be an indicator of oxidative damage in epilepsy. This is the first meta-analysis of circulating GSH-Px and SOD levels in PWE and healthy controls.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION It is widely accepted that trace elements have been implicated in various metabolic processes. Valproic acid (VPA) is a remarkably safe and effective antiepileptic drug. There is no consensus option regarding the fluctuations in serum zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and selenium (Se) in epileptic patients treated with VPA. We applied a meta-analysis to systematically assess the effects of VPA on serum ions in these patients. AREAS COVERED In this study, we performed a meta-analysis of the changes in serum Zn, Cu, and Se levels in human samples of healthy controls, epileptic patients, and patients treated with VPA. Twenty-two published analyzable studies were selected by searching the databases of PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Google Scholar, Web of Science, EMBASE, WAN FANG and Vip. EXPERT OPINION Serum Se levels in epileptic patients were decreased compared to healthy controls. Serum Zn levels in patients with VPA treatment were significantly lower than those in epileptic patients. The results of this meta-analysis are instructive for the intake of trace elements such as Zn, Cu, and Se in the diet balance of patients with epilepsy treated with VPA. Meanwhile, this study provides a theoretical basis for the combined use of other drugs that affect the intake and absorption of trace elements and VPA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The beneficial effects of selenium (Se) to human health are exerted by selenoproteins, which can be quantified in blood and used as biomarkers of Se status. Different responses of Se biomarkers after supplementation with selenomethionine and sodium selenite have been observed and some of them could be due to genetic polymorphisms, mainly single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Brazil nuts are known to be the richest natural source of Se. OBJECTIVE Investigate how genetic variations in selenoprotein genes modulate biomarkers of Se status in response to Brazil nut supplementation. METHODS The SU.BRA.NUT study was a four month interventional trial which involved healthy volunteers of both genders, selected in University of Sao Paulo. The supplementation was done with one Brazil nut a day for 8 weeks, followed by 8 weeks of washout. Blood samples were collected at 5 time points: baseline, 4 and 8 weeks of supplementation and 4 and 8 weeks of washout for analysis of five biomarkers of Se status - erythrocyte GPx1 (Glutathione Peroxidase 1) activity, plasma GPx3 activity, plasma Se, erythrocyte Se, and plasma selenoprotein P. The gene expression of GPX1, SELENOP, SELENOF and SELENOS was done before and after 8 weeks of supplementation. The volunteers were genotyped for SNPs in GPX1 (rs1050450, rs3811699 and rs1800699), GPX4 (rs713041), SELENOP (rs3877899 and rs7579), SELENOF (rs5845) and SELENOS (rs34713741). RESULTS A total of 130 volunteers finished the protocol. The concentrations of four biomarkers of Se status increased significantly after 4 and 8 weeks of supplementation, being modulated by gender. In addition, erythrocyte GPx1 activity was associated with rs1050450, rs713041 and rs5845. Plasma Se was associated with rs7579 and selenoprotein P with plasma Se at baseline. Nut supplementation significantly increased GPX1 mRNA expression only in subjects with CC genotype at rs1050450. SELENOP mRNA expression was significantly lower in subjects with GG genotype at rs7579 before and after supplementation. CONCLUSION Genetic variations in GPX1 and SELENOP genes are associated with different responses of molecular and biochemical biomarkers of Se status after Brazil nut supplementation in healthy Brazilians. Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. To date, no systematic study of interactions between selenium status parameters (SSPs: serum selenium concentration, plasma glutathione peroxidase, GPX3, plasma selenoprotein P, SELENOP), sex hormones, thyroid function parameters, and other laboratory parameters in patients with PCOS has been undertaken. Therefore we aimed to compare such parameters in women with PCOS and in the control groups, and to investigate the multidimensional interactions between various parameters in PCOS patients and in controls. The subjects were diagnosed either with PCOS (n=28, 25.4±5.2 y) or with PCOS+Hashimoto disease (n=13, 27.3±5.6 y). Female patients having normal menses were recruited into the first control group (n=70, 26.8±7.3 y) or to the second control group comprising women only with Hashimoto disease (n=10, 26.2±6.9 y). No apparent differences in SSPs between control subjects and patients with PCOS, also complicated with Hashimoto disease, were identified, though such differences were noticeable for total testosterone (tT), sex hormone binding globulin, free androgen index, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), and insulin profile. The correlation between tT and DHEAS was found the strongest. The other group of mutually highly and positively correlated parameters consisted of GPX3, follicle stimulating hormone, free triiodothyronine and free thyroxine. All the latter parameters correlated negatively with vitamin D3. SSPs took part in interactions with thyroid hormones, sex hormones and some other parameters, but only for GPX3 such interactions were statistically significant. The significance of these findings remains open for further investigation, particularly in patients with PCOS and/or Hashimoto disease.

Abstract
Levetiracetam (LEV) is a unique, effective, relatively safe antiepileptic drug that preferentially interacts with synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A). This study aimed to explore the effect of combined treatment of LEV with omega 3 (OM3) on cognitive impairment and hippocampal oxidative stress and DNA damage induced by seizures in the PTZ-kindled young rat model. Cognitive functions, biomarkers of oxidative stress, and DNA damage were assessed in PTZ-kindled young rats pretreated with single and combined treatment of LEV (30mg/kg, i.p.) and OM3 (200mg/kg, p.o.). Pretreatment with LEV and OM3 at the tested doses significantly attenuated PTZ-induced seizures and decreased cognitive impairment in both passive avoidance and elevated plus maze tests in the PTZ-kindled rats. Moreover, the increase in hippocampal glutamate, malondialdehyde and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels, as well as the decrease in reduced glutathione (GSH) levels and GSH-peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities induced by PTZ kindling, significantly decreased. These effects were higher with combined treatment of LEV with OM3 and significantly more than the observed effects of single LEV or OM3. In conclusion, the combined treatment of LEV with OM3 is more effective in seizure control and alleviating the cognitive impairment induced by PTZ kindling in the young rat model, the effects that result from the decrease in hippocampal oxidative stress and DNA damage which can be attributed to the antioxidant properties of both LEV and OM3. These results may be promising for the use of LEV and OM3 combination in the treatment of epileptic children.
