Frequency and Time Domain Analysis of EEG Based Auditory Evoked Potentials to Detect Binaural Hearing in Noise

Hearing loss is a prevalent health issue that affects individuals worldwide. Binaural hearing refers to the ability to integrate information received simultaneously from both ears, allowing individuals to identify, locate, and separate sound sources. Auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) refer to the electrical responses that are generated within any part of the auditory system in response to auditory stimuli presented externally. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a non-invasive technology used for the monitoring of AEPs. This research aims to investigate the use of audiometric EEGs as an objective method to detect specific features of binaural hearing with frequency and time domain analysis techniques. Thirty-five subjects with normal hearing and a mean age of 27.35 participated in the research. The stimuli used in the current study were designed to investigate the impact of binaural phase shifts of the auditory stimuli in the presence of noise. The frequency domain and time domain analyses provided statistically significant and promising novel findings. The study utilized Blackman windowed 18 ms and 48 ms pure tones as stimuli, embedded in noise maskers, of frequencies 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 750 Hz, 1000 Hz in homophasic (the same phase in both ears) and antiphasic (180-degree phase difference between the two ears) conditions. The study focuses on the effect of phase reversal of auditory stimuli in noise of the middle latency response (MLR) and late latency response (LLR) regions of the AEPs. The frequency domain analysis revealed a significant difference in the frequency bands of 20 to 25 Hz and 25 to 30 Hz when elicited by antiphasic and homophasic stimuli of 500 Hz for MLRs and 500 Hz and 250 Hz for LLRs. The time domain analysis identified the Na peak of the MLR for 500 Hz, the N1 peak of the LLR for 500 Hz stimuli and the P300 peak of the LLR for 250 Hz as significant potential markers in detecting binaural processing in the brain.

Electroacupuncture Promotes Neuroplasticity of Central Auditory Pathway: An Auditory Evoked Potentials Study

Our previous studies found that electroacupuncture at the right Zhongzhu acupoint (TE3) can enhance auditory recovery in rats with noise-induced hearing loss. Here, we investigated the changes in auditory brainstem response (ABR) and long late latency (LLR) evoked potential to explain the mechanisms of electroacupuncture at TE3. The auditory evoked potentials were recorded, including ABR and LLR, at baseline and on day 3 (D3), D5, and D8 after baseline. The 2-Hz electroacupuncture at the right TE3 was applied on D3, D4, and D5 in the electroacupuncture group but not in the control group. In ABR, compared with the control group, the latency shift of waves I (0.298 ± 0.033 vs −0.045 ± 0.057 ms), III (0.718 ± 0.038 vs −0.163 ± 0.130 ms), and V (1.160 ± 0.082 vs −0.207 ± 0.138 ms) on D3 (all $p<0.01$ ) and of wave V (0.616 ± 0.433 vs −0.352 ± 0.209 ms, $p<0.05$ ) on D5 was greater in the electroacupuncture group than that in the control group. Moreover, the interpeak latency shift of I–III (0.420 ± 0.041 vs −0.118 ± 0.177 ms) and I–V (0.863 ± 0.088 vs −0.162 ± 0.156 ms) on D3 (both $p<0.05$ ) and of III–V (0.342 ± 0.193 vs −0.190 ± 0.110 ms) and I–V (0.540 ± 0.352 vs −0.343 ± 0.184 ms) on D5 (both $p<0.05$ ) was greater in the electroacupuncture group than that in the control group. In LLR, the latency shift of P0 was greater in the electroacupuncture group than in the control group on D3 (3.956 ± 2.975 vs −1.178 ± 1.358 ms, $p<0.01$ ) and D5 (2.200 ± 1.889 vs −0.311 ± 1.078 ms, $p<0.05$ ). These findings indicate that electroacupuncture at the right TE3 can modulate the neuroplasticity of the central auditory pathway, including the brain stem and the primary and secondary auditory cortex.

Trials and intensity effects in single-trial ERP components and autonomic responses in a dishabituation paradigm with very long ISIs

The phasic orienting reflex (OR) was investigated using single-trial data collected concurrently from 4 autonomic measures and event-related potentials (ERPs). In an auditory dishabituation paradigm, twelve indifferent tones of two intensities (60 or 80 dB, intensity change on trial 11, counterbalanced between subjects) were presented at very long interstimulus intervals (ISIs). Novelty and intensity based stimulus-response patterns were examined seeking ERP analogues of autonomic measures representing pre-OR and OR processing. Skin conductance response (SCR) represented the phasic OR index. EOG-corrected ERP data for 16 subjects were decomposed by a temporal Principal Components Analysis (PCA). SCR diminished over 10 standard trials, recovered on change trial 11, dishabituated to the re-presentation of the standard tone on trial 12, and showed intensity effects at the change - formal requirements for an OR index. The evoked cardiac response (HR) showed no trial or intensity effects. Respiratory pause (RP) decreased linearly over trials and showed recovery but no dishabituation or intensity effect. Peripheral vasoconstriction (PVC) failed to decrement but exhibited an intensity effect. Ten identifiable ERP components were extracted: Na, P1, N1-1, PN, P2, P3a, P3b, a novelty-sensitive HabP3, an intensity-sensitive IntP3, and the Slow Wave (SW). Pattern 1 showed no trial or intensity effects (HR, P1, PN, P2); Pattern 2 showed no trial effect but an intensity effect (PVC, Na, N1-1, P3a); and Pattern 3 demonstrated habituation and an intensity effect (SCR, RP, P3b, HabP3, IntP3, SW). The observed fractionation of autonomic and central measures is consistent with Preliminary Process Theory (PPT) rather than the notion of a unitary OR.

Neural time course of echo suppression in humans

In reverberant environments, the brain can suppress echoes so that auditory perception is dominated by the primary or leading sounds. Echo suppression comprises at least two distinct phenomena whose neural bases are unknown: spatial translocation of an echo toward the primary sound, and object capture to combine echo and primary sounds into a single event. In an electroencephalography study, we presented subjects with primary-echo (leading-lagging) click pairs in virtual acoustic space, with interclick delay at the individual's 50% suppression threshold. On each trial, subjects reported both click location (one or both hemifields) and the number of clicks they heard (one or two). Thus, the threshold stimulus led to two common percepts: Suppressed and Not Suppressed. On some trials, a subset of subjects reported an intermediate percept, in which two clicks were perceived in the same hemifield as the leading click, providing a dissociation between spatial translocation and object capture. We conducted time-frequency and event-related potential analyses to examine the time course of the neural mechanisms mediating echo suppression. Enhanced gamma band phase synchronization (peaking at approximately 40 Hz) specific to successful echo suppression was evident from 20 to 60 ms after stimulus onset. N1 latency provided a categorical neural marker of spatial translocation, whereas N1 amplitude still reflected the physical presence of a second (lagging) click. These results provide evidence that (1) echo suppression begins early, at the latest when the acoustic signal first reaches cortex, and (2) the brain spatially translocates a perceived echo before the primary sound captures it.
