Determination of Benzotriazole and Its Derivatives in Aqueous Sample with Air-assisted Liquid-Liquid Microextraction Followed by High-performance Liquid Chromatography

Environmental risk assessment of low molecule benzotriazoles in urban road rainwaters in Poland

This study aimed to identify and quantify benzotriazoles (BTRs) emissions from road traffic and paved areas in an urban environment. Heterocyclic organic compounds BTRs are an emerging threat, under-recognized and under-analyzed in most environmental and water legislation. They are hazardous, potentially mutagenic, and carcinogenic micropollutants, not susceptible to effective biodegradation, and they move easily through the trophic chain, contaminating the environment and water resources. Traffic activities are a common source of BTR emissions in the urban environment, directly polluting human habitats through the different routes and numerous vehicles circulating in the cities. Using twelve heterogeneous locations scattered over a metropolitan area in Poland as a case study, this research analyzed the presence of BTRs in water samples from runoff produced from rainwater and snowmelt. 1H-BTR, 4Me-BTR, 5Me-BTR and 5Cl-BTR were detected in the tested runoff water. 5Cl-BTR was present in all samples and in the highest concentrations reaching 47,000 ng/L. Risk quotients calculated on the basis of the determined concentrations indicate that the highest environmental risk is associated with the presence of 5Cl-BTR and the sum of 4Me-BTR and 5Me-BTR, and the most sensitive organisms are bacteria and invertebrates. The results indicate that it is possible to associate the occurrence of these contaminants with the type of cover, traffic intensity, and vehicle type.

Recent modified air-assisted liquid–liquid microextraction applications for medicines and organic compounds in various samples: A review

Air-assisted liquid–liquid microextraction (AALLME) is a procedure for sample preparation that has high recoveries and high preconcentration factors while using a small amount of extractants. This procedure has gained widespread acceptance among scientists due to a variety of advantages, including its easiness, being cheap, green, and available in most laboratories. The current review has focused on the analysis of medicines and organic compounds using various modes of AALLME. The use of various extractants and support factors were developed in many modes of AALLME. A review of literature revealed that the procedure is used as a powerful and efficient approach for extracting medicals and organic compounds. This review explained 12 different types of AALLME methods. The findings on the modifications of AALLME modes that have been published are summarized. Future directions are also being discussed.

Artificial intelligence-based approaches for modeling the effects of spirulina growth mediums on total phenolic compounds

Spirulina is a microalga and its phenolic compound is affected by growth mediums. In this study, Artificial intelligence (AI) based models, namely the Adaptive-Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) and Multilayer perceptron (MLP) models, and Step-Wise-Linear Regression (SWLR) were used to predict total phenolic compounds (TPC) of the spirulina algae. Spirulina productivity (P), extraction yield (EY), total flavonoids (TF), percent of flavonoid (%F) and percent of phenols (%P) are considered as input variables with the corresponding TPC as an output variable. From the result, TPC has a high positive correlation with the input variables with R = 0.99999. Also, the models showed that the ANFIS and SWLR gives superior result in the testing phase and increased its accuracy by 2% compared to MLP model in the prediction of TPC.

Simultaneous determination of low molecule benzotriazoles and benzotriazole UV stabilizers in wastewater by ultrasound-assisted emulsification microextraction followed by GC-MS detection

A rapid, sensitive, economically and ecologically friendly method based on one-step ultrasound-assisted emulsification microextraction and in situ derivatization followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for simultaneous determination of low molecular benzotriazoles and benzotriazole-based ultraviolet filters was developed. The optimized method allows quantification of benzotriazole, 4-methylbenzotriazole, 5-methylbenzotriazole; 5-chlorobenzotriazole, 2-(2'-hydroxy-3'-tert-butyl-5'-methylphenyl)-5-chlorobenzortriazole and 2-(2'-hydroxy-5'-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenyl)benzotriazole in municipal and industrial (dairy) wastewater. The method was validated using real influent and effluent wastewater and samples at various stages of the purification process. Relative recoveries obtained using wastewater as sample matrix were between 77 and 137%, method limits of detection from 0.001 to 0.035 µg/L, method limits of quantification from 0.003 to 0.116 µg/L, the repeatability expressed by the coefficient of variation did not exceed 12%. The use of the method for the determination of tested compounds in municipal and industrial wastewater showed their presence in most of the tested samples, in concentrations from LoD to 6.110 µg/L. The conducted studies of samples from municipal wastewater treatment plant located in north-east Poland showed that the effectiveness of benzotriazole removal by this plant wasfrom 29 to 84%. The load of tested compounds released into the environment by this facility ranges from 2 to 269 mg/day/1000 inhabitants.

Application of aeration-assisted homogeneous liquid-liquid microextraction procedure using Box-Behnken design for determination of curcumin by HPLC

A simple, efficient, and rapid sample preparation method based on aeration-assisted homogeneous liquid-liquid microextraction was developed for determination of curcumin in food samples by high-performance liquid chromatography. The centrifuge step has been eliminated in this procedure. The effects of some variables, such as pH, volume of extraction solvent, extraction time, and salt effect, were studied through a Box-Behnken design method. Under the optimum conditions, calibration curves of curcumin were linear in the range of 0.08-4000 μg/mL with R2  = 0.997. Limit of detection and relative standard deviation were 0.019 μg/mL and 3.01%, respectively. The preconcentration factor achieved was 166. The proposed method was successfully applied to determination of curcumin in various food samples.

Bar Adsorptive Microextraction Coated with Carbon-based Phase Mixtures for Performance-Enhancement to Monitor Selected Benzotriazoles, Benzothiazoles, and Benzenesulfonamides in Environmental Water Matrices

: In the present work we propose, for the first time, bar adsorptive microextraction coated with carbon-based phase mixtures, followed by microliquid desorption and high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (BAμE-μLD/HPLC-DAD) analysis, to enhance the performance of the determination of traces of benzotriazoles (BTRs), benzothiazoles (BTs), and benzenesulfonamide derivatives (BSDs) in environmental water matrices. Assessing six carbon-based sorbents (CA1, CN1, B test EUR, SX PLUS, SX 1, and R) with different selectivity properties allowed us to tailor the best phase mixture (R, 12.5%/CN1, 87.5%) that has convenient porosity, texture, and surface chemistry (pHPZC,mix ~6.5) for trace analysis of benzenesulfonamide, 1-hydroxybenzotriazole, 1H-benzotriazole, 5-methyl-1H-benzotriazole, benzothiazole, and 1,3-benzothiazol-2-ol chemicals in aqueous media. Optimized experimental conditions provided average recoveries ranging from 37.9% to 59.2%, appropriate linear dynamic ranges (5.0 to 120.0 µg L-1; r2 ≥ 0.9964), limits of detection between 1.0 and 1.4 μg L-1, and good precisions (relative standard deviation (RSD) ≤ 9.3%). The proposed methodology (BAμE(R, 12.5%/CN1, 87.5%)-μLD/HPLC-DAD) also proved to be a suitable sorption-based static microextraction alternative to monitor traces of BTRs, BTs, and BSDs in rain, waste, tap, and estuarine water samples. From the data obtained, the proposed approach showed that the BAμE technique with the addition of lab-made devices allows users to adapt the technique to use sorbents or mixtures of sorbents with the best selectivity characteristics whenever distinct classes of target analytes occur simultaneously in the same application.

A heparin-modified palladium nanozyme for photometric determination of protamine

Heparin was employed as the stabilizing agent in the synthesis of peroxidase-mimicking Pd nanoparticles. The heparin-capped Pd nanozyme can act as both the signal amplifier and the selective binder of protamine. The most efficient nanozyme with the mean size of 3.5 nm consists of 70.8% metallic Pd⁰ and 29.2% Pd²⁺ species. Enzyme kinetic studies show that the K_m values are 0.036 mM for 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine and 78 mM for H₂O₂. Protamine shows strong affinity to the heparin-capped Pd nanozyme, and induces an apparent aggregation of the nanoparticles. This results in a significant inhibition of the peroxidase-mimicking activities. Hence, the oxidation of TMB by H₂O₂ to a blue product with a maximum absorption at 652 nm is suppressed. Based on this finding, a photometric assay is developed for the determination of protamine. The linear response is in the concentration range 0.02 ~ 0.8 μg mL^-1, and the limit of detection is 0.014 μg mL^-1. This assay presents high selectivity toward other biological substances. Water dispersed two-dimensional ultrathin Fe(iii)-modified covalent triazine framework nanosheets: peroxidase like activity and colorimetric biosensing applications

Peroxidase mimics have attracted increasing attention as emerging artificial enzymes due to their promising applications in many fields, including bionanotechnology, sustainable chemistry, and environmental remediation. Although many types of peroxidase mimics have been successfully exploited in the past decade, the development of an innovative peroxidase mimic that does not contain noble metals, but exhibits remarkable peroxidase-like activity and low cytotoxicity still remains a major challenge in this field. Herein, we present a bulk covalent triazine framework cleavage and metal atom anchoring strategy for the synthesis of iron-modified two-dimensional covalent triazine frameworks (2D Fe-CTFs) that demonstrate excellent peroxidase-like activity. Furthermore, three kinds of colorimetric sensing platforms for sarcosine, ochratoxin A, and fluoride ions were constructed based on the intrinsic peroxidase-like activity, salt-induced coagulation, and coordination competition of the 2D Fe-CTF, respectively. This work may provide a new synthetic method for peroxidase mimics that can be used in various colorimetric sensors.
