Catalytic oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde over a copper Schiff-base/SBA-15 catalyst

Enhanced Catalytic Activity of a Copper(II) Metal-Organic Framework Constructed via Semireversible Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Dehydration

Herein, we present a copper(II) metal-organic framework, [Cu2(btec)(OH2)4]·2H2O (1) [(btec)4- = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylate], that undergoes single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations into two anhydrous phases 2' and 2″ with the chemical formula [Cu2(btec)], triggered by two-step dehydration at 403 and 433 K, respectively. After immersion in water for 3 days at room temperature, 2' transformed into [Cu2(btec)(OH2)] (3), while both 2' and 2″ took 1 week to revert to 1. Dynamic vapor sorption studies validated water-induced reversible structural transformations at 70% relative humidity (RH). According to single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), the local coordination geometry of the Cu2+ ion in 2' changed from a saturated octahedron to a coordinatively unsaturated square-based pyramid in 3, manifested by changes in color and dimensionality. From a topological point of view, all of the scaffolds show a binodal (3,6)-connected kgd topology with the point symbol {43}2{46}. In addition, the materials were thoroughly characterized using routine spectroscopic data and various analytical techniques. The catalytic activity of the microporous materials in the liquid-phase oxidation of styrene in acetonitrile, using 30% (wt) H2O2 as the oxidant, was investigated. The excellent performance of the monohydrous phase 3 was shown to be superior to the pristine framework and the anhydrous counterparts, as evidenced by a good turnover number (TON) and turnover frequency (TOF) = 82.6 and 21.0 h-1, respectively. Within 4 h, the substrates were catalytically oxidized to the desired products with up to 67% conversion and 100% benzaldehyde selectivity. It is worth noting that the accessible active metal sites and higher surface area enhanced the catalytic properties of 3. Furthermore, the maintenance of catalytic efficiency over five cycles and reusability are illustrated and discussed in terms of the structural differences of the microporous frameworks. Thus, a preliminary reaction mechanism for the selective oxidation of styrene is proposed. This study not only provides a fascinating example of MOF chromism achieved by thermal activation and rehydration but also sheds some light on the relationship between pore-surface- or metal-engineered sites in MOFs and their heterogeneous catalytic performances.

Anchoring of Copper(II)-Schiff Base Complex in SBA-15 Matrix as Efficient Oxidation and Biomimetic Catalyst

A new mononuclear Cu(II) complex [Cu(L2)(H2O)2], where L is the Schiff base 2-[2-(3-bromopropoxy)benzylideneamino] benzoic acid, was synthesized and covalently anchored onto an amino-functionalized SBA-15 mesoporous silica in order to obtain an efficient heterogeneous catalyst. The elemental, structural, textural and morphological characterization confirmed the coordination of the central Cu(II) ion with two ligands and two H2O molecules in the synthesized complex and its successful immobilization into the inner pore surface of the NH2-functionalized support without the loss of the mesoporous structure. The catalytic activity of the free or immobilized Cu(II) complex was tested in the oxidation of cyclohexene with H2O2 under an air atmosphere and the dismutation reaction of the superoxide radical anions with very good results. In addition, catalyst reuse tests claim its suitability in alkene oxidation processes or as a biomimetic catalyst.

Cu(II) and Mn(II) Anchored on Functionalized Mesoporous Silica with Schiff Bases: Effects of Supports and Metal-Ligand Interactions on Catalytic Activity

New series of Cu(II) and Mn(II) complexes with Schiff base ligands derived from 2-furylmethylketone (Met), 2-furaldehyde (Fur), and 2-hydroxyacetopheneone (Hyd) have been synthesized in situ on SBA-15-NH₂, MCM-48-NH₂, and MCM-41-NH₂ functionalized supports. The hybrid materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, SEM and TEM microscopy, TG analysis, and AAS, FTIR, EPR, and XPS spectroscopies. Catalytic performances were tested in oxidation with the hydrogen peroxide of cyclohexene and of different aromatic and aliphatic alcohols (benzyl alcohol, 2-methylpropan-1-ol, and 1-buten-3-ol). The catalytic activity was correlated with the type of mesoporous silica support, ligand, and metal-ligand interactions. The best catalytic activity of all tested hybrid materials was obtained in the oxidation of cyclohexene on SBA-15-NH₂-MetMn as a heterogeneous catalyst. No leaching was evidenced for Cu and Mn complexes, and the Cu catalysts were more stable due to a more covalent interaction of the metallic ions with the immobilized ligands.

Preparation of Superhydrophobic Metal-Organic Framework/Polymer Composites as Stable and Efficient Catalysts

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a chemical platform, combined with multifunctional polymers are of interest in catalytic applications, which can not only inherit the outstanding properties of the two components but also lead to unique synergistic effects. Nonetheless, most MOFs possess varying degrees of water instability, which limits their real application. Herein, we fabricated highly hydrophobic MOF/polymer composites via a universal post-synthetic polymerization strategy as efficient catalysts. Polyaniline (PANI) was first hybridized with MOFs by vapor deposition polymerization, and then, hydrophobic molecules were grafted to the PANI by a covalent linking process, thereby forming a superhydrophobic MOF/PANI hybrid material (MOF/PANI-shp). The resultant MOF/PANI-shp not only obtains superior moisture/water resistance without significantly disturbing the original features but also exhibits a novel catalytic selectivity in styrene oxidation because of the accessible sites and synergistic effects. Such a synthetic strategy for the MOF/polymer catalyst opens a new avenue for the design of a unique catalyst with outstanding catalytic efficiency, selectivity, and stability.

Selective Styrene Oxidation to Benzaldehyde over Recently Developed Heterogeneous Catalysts

The selective oxidation of styrene under heterogeneous catalyzed conditions delivers environmentally friendly paths for the production of benzaldehyde, an important intermediate for the synthesis of several products. The present review explores heterogeneous catalysts for styrene oxidation using a variety of metal catalysts over the last decade. The use of several classes of supports is discussed, including metal-organic frameworks, zeolites, carbon materials and silicas, among others. The studied catalytic systems propose as most used oxidants tert-butyl hydroperoxide, and hydrogen peroxide and mild reaction conditions. The reaction mechanism proceeds through the generation of an intermediate reactive metal-oxygen species by catalyst-oxidant interactions. Overall, most of the studies highlight the synergetic effects among the metal and support for the activity and selectivity enhancement.

One-Step Construction of Hydrophobic MOFs@COFs Core-Shell Composites for Heterogeneous Selective Catalysis

The exploration of novel porous core-shell materials is of great significance because of their prospectively improved performance and extensive applications in separation, energy conversion, and catalysis. Here, mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) NH2-MIL-101(Fe) as a core generate a shell with mesoporous covalent organic frameworks (COFs) NUT-COF-1(NTU) by a covalent linking process, the composite NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@NTU keeping retentive crystallinity with hierarchical porosity well. Importantly, the NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@NTU composite shows significantly enhanced catalytic conversion and selectivity during styrene oxidation. It is mainly due to the hydrophilic MOF nanocrystals readily gathering the hydrophobic reactants styrene and boosting the radical mechanism path after combining the hydrophobic COFs shell. The synthetic strategy in this systematic study develops a new rational design for the synthesis of other core-shell MOF/COF-based hybrid materials, which can expand the promising applications.

Controllable synthesis of mesoporous titanosilicates for styrene oxidization using a nanocellulose template strategy
