Regulating the electronic structure by P-doping cobalt-based catalyst for atomic hydrogen mediated electrocatalytic dechlorination

Electrocatalytic dechlorination by atomic hydrogen (H*) is efficient, but limited by the low efficiency of H* production. Herein, a phosphorus-doped cobalt nitrogen carbon catalyst (Co-NP/C) was prepared, which had high catalytic activity in a wide pH range (3-11). The turnover frequency of Co-NP/C (3.54 min-1) was 1.21-59000 times superior to that of current Pd-based and non-noble metal catalysts (0.00006-2.92 min-1). Co-NP/C significantly enhanced H* generation, which was 1.52, 2.44, and 3.77 times stronger than that of Co-N/C, NP/C, and N/C, respectively, since the introduction of phosphorus was found enhanced the electron density of cobalt and regulated the electron transfer. Co-NP/C showed outstanding catalytic performance after ten cycles and could achieve nearly complete chloramphenicol removal. This regulation method was verified to be effective for other non-noble metal (Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni) phosphorus doped catalysts, proposing a general class for efficient electrochemical dechlorination, which would be of great significance for the elimination of chlorinated organic pollutants.

Structural Design of Single-Atom Catalysts for Enhancing Petrochemical Catalytic Reaction Process

Petroleum, as the "lifeblood" of industrial development, is the important energy source and raw material. The selective transformation of petroleum into high-end chemicals is of great significance, but still exists enormous challenges. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with 100% atom utilization and homogeneous active sites, promise a broad application in petrochemical processes. Herein, the research systematically summarizes the recent research progress of SACs in petrochemical catalytic reaction, proposes the role of structural design of SACs in enhancing catalytic performance, elucidates the catalytic reaction mechanisms of SACs in the conversion of petrochemical processes, and reveals the high activity origins of SACs at the atomic scale. Finally, the key challenges are summarized and an outlook on the design, identification of active sites, and the appropriate application of artificial intelligence technology is provided for achieving scale-up application of SACs in petrochemical process.

Enhanced Hydrosaturation Selectivity and Electron Transfer for Electrocatalytic Chlorophenols Hydrogenation on Ru Sites

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation is acknowledged as a promising strategy for chlorophenol dechlorination. However, the widely used Pd catalysts exhibit drawbacks, such as high costs and low selectivity for phenol hydrosaturation. Herein, we demonstrate the potential and mechanism of Ru in serving as a Pd substitute using 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) as a model pollutant. Up to 99.8% TCP removal efficiency and 99% selectivity to cyclohexanol, a value-added compound with an extremely low toxicity, were achieved on the Ru electrode. In contrast, only 66% of TCP was removed on the Pd electrode, with almost no hydrosaturation selectivity. The superiority of Ru over Pd was especially noteworthy in alkaline conditions or the presence of interfering species such as S2-. The theoretical simulation demonstrates that Ru possesses a hydrodechlorination energy barrier of 0.72 eV, which is comparable to that on Pd. Meanwhile, hydrosaturation requires an activation energy of 0.69 eV on Ru, which is much lower than that on Pd (0.92 eV). The main reaction mechanism on Ru is direct electron transfer, which is distinct from that on Pd (indirect pathway via atomic hydrogen, H*). This work thereby provides new insights into designing cost-effective electrocatalysts for halogenated phenol detoxification and resource recovery.

Electrocatalytic hydro-dehalogenation of halogenated organic pollutants from wastewater: A critical review

Halogenated organic pollutants are often found in wastewater effluent although it has been usually treated by advanced oxidation processes. Atomic hydrogen (H*)-mediated electrocatalytic dehalogenation, with an outperformed performance for breaking the strong carbon-halogen bonds, is of increasing significance for the efficient removal of halogenated organic compounds from water and wastewater. This review consolidates the recent advances in the electrocatalytic hydro-dehalogenation of toxic halogenated organic pollutants from contaminated water. The effect of the molecular structure (e.g., the number and type of halogens, electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups) on dehalogenation reactivity is firstly predicted, revealing the nucleophilic properties of the existing halogenated organic pollutants. The specific contribution of the direct electron transfer and atomic hydrogen (H*)-mediated indirect electron transfer to dehalogenation efficiency has been established, aiming to better understand the dehalogenation mechanisms. The analyses of entropy and enthalpy illustrate that low pH has a lower energy barrier than that of high pH, facilitating the transformation from proton to H*. Furthermore, the quantitative relationship between dehalogenation efficiency and energy consumption shows an exponential increase of energy consumption for dehalogenation efficiency increasing from 90% to 100%. Lastly, challenges and perspectives are discussed for efficient dehalogenation and practical applications.

Revisiting UV/sulfite exposed to air: A redox process for reductive dechlorination and oxidative mineralization

2,4-Dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) widely exists in many industrial wastewaters and is considered a priority pollutant due to its high toxicity. In this work, we proposed a UV/sulfite process without aeration for high-efficiency dechlorination and enhanced mineralization. The UV/sulfite system significantly improved the removal of 2,4-DCP (93.33 % in 60 min) and dechlorination rate (85.13 % in 60 min) compared with UV alone and sulfite alone, and the synergistic factor was 6.59. The UV/sulfite system without aeration improved the mineralization rate (49.80 %) compared with the nitrogen aeration system. UV/sulfite was a reduction-oxidation coupled process and was more suitable for neutral and alkaline conditions. Reducing species (hydrated electrons and H^•) made 2,4-DCP dechlorinate to form dechlorination products such as p-chlorophenol (4-CP), o-chlorophenol (2-CP), and phenol, which were further mineralized by oxidized species (SO₄^•-). UV/sulfite remained highly efficient in the presence of coexisting ions and under different water quality conditions. This process was also suitable for removing a wide range of chlorinated organic compounds. The UV/sulfite process without aeration can achieve high dechlorination and enhanced mineralization with simple operation and low cost (1.78 $·m^-3 order^-1), which has a broad and cost-effective application prospect in removing refractory halogenated organic pollutants.

Effect of Pretreatment with Acids on the N-Functionalization of Carbon Nanofibers Using Melamine

Nowadays, N-functionalized carbon nanomaterials attract a growing interest. The use of melamine as a functionalizing agent looks prospective from environmental and cost points of view. Moreover, the melamine molecule contains a high amount of nitrogen with an atomic ratio C/N of 1/2. In present work, the initial carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were synthesized via catalytic pyrolysis of ethylene over microdispersed Ni-Cu alloy. The CNF materials were pretreated with 12% hydrochloric acid or with a mixture of concentrated nitric and sulfuric acids, which allowed etching of the metals from the fibers and oxidizing of the fibers' surface. Finally, the CNFs were N-functionalized via their impregnation with a melamine solution and thermolysis in an inert atmosphere. According to the microscopic data, the initial structure of the CNFs remained the same after the pretreatment and post-functionalization procedures. At the same time, the surface of the N-functionalized CNFs became more defective. The textural properties of the materials were also affected. In the case of the oxidative treatment with a mixture of acids, the highest content of the surface oxygen of 11.8% was registered by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The amount of nitrogen introduced during the post-functionalization of CNFs with melamine increased from 1.4 to 4.3%. Along with this, the surface oxygen concentration diminished to 6.4%.

Highly efficient degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol over CeO2/g-C3N4 composites under visible-light irradiation: Detailed reaction pathway and mechanism

Herein, we report for the first time the highly efficient degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) over CeO₂/g-C₃N₄ composites (xCeO/CN) prepared via wet-chemical solution method. It is shown that the resultant nanocomposites with a proper mass ratio percentage (15%) of CeO coupled exhibit greatly enhanced visible-light activity for 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) degradation compared to the bare g-C₃N₄. From photoluminescence (PL) and Fluorescence (FL) results, it is suggested that enhanced photo-degradation is attributed to the significantly improved charge separation and transfer as a result of the proper band alignments between g-C₃N₄ and CeO components. Further, from radical trapping experiments, it is confirmed that hydroxyl radicals (OH) are the predominant oxidants involved in the degradation of 2,4-DCP over CeO/CN composites. Furthermore, a possible reaction pathway and detailed photocatalytic mechanism for 2,4-DCP degradation is proposed mainly based on the detected liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS) intermediate products, that readily transform into CO₂ and H₂O. This work would help researchers to deeply understand the reaction mechanism of 2,4-DCP and would provide feasible routes to fabricate g-C₃N₄-based highly efficient photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

The Preparation of Pd/Foam-Ni Electrode and Its Electrocatalytic Hydrodechlorination for Monochlorophenol Isomers

Noble metal palladium modified foamed nickel electrode (Pd/foam-Ni) was prepared by electrodeposition method. The fabricated electrode showed better catalytic performance than the Pd/foam-Ni prepared by conventional electroless deposition. The catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Electrocatalytic activity of the Pd/Ni was studied for the hydrodechlorination of monochlorophenol isomers. The Pd/Ni exhibited good catalytic activity for 3-chlorophenol (3-CP). Complete decomposition of chlorophenol isomers could be achieved within 2 h, and the hydrodechlorination process conformed to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. It showed a supreme stability after recycling for 5 times. The Pd/Ni exhibited a promising application prospect with high effectiveness and low Pd loading.
