Ag nanoparticles deposited on oxygen-vacancy-containing BiVO 4 for enhanced near-infrared photocatalytic activity

Efficient Photocatalytic Activation of Peroxymonosulfate by Cobalt-Doped Oxygen-Vacancies-Rich BiVO4 for Rapid Tetracycline Degradation

In this work, cobalt-doped oxygen-vacancies-rich BiVO4 (Co/BiVO4-Vo) was successfully synthesized for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) by activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) under visible light. The morphologies, microstructures, and optical properties of the photocatalysts were analyzed in detail. Co/BiVO4-Vo exhibited significantly enhanced degradation, removing 92.3% of TC within 10 min, which was greater than those of pure BiVO4 (62.2%) and oxygen-vacancies-rich BiVO4 (BiVO4-Vo) (72.0%), respectively. The photogenerated charge separation and transport properties were explored through surface photovoltage (SPV), photoluminescence spectrum (PL), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS) measurements. Additionally, an in-depth investigation was conducted on the photocatalytically assisted advanced oxidation processes based on SO4•- (SR-AOPs) for the degradation of organic pollutants. The experimental results showed that the introduction of oxygen vacancies and Co doping achieved an effective separation of photogenerated carriers, which could accelerate the cycling between Co3+ and Co2+ and further activate PMS. The results of free radical capture experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments showed that reactive oxygen species (ROSs) such as 1O2, •O2-, and SO4•- played a dominant role in the removal of pollutants. This work provides a novel insight into the further development of efficient and rapid PMS photoactivators for environmental remediation of water bodies.

Preparation and application of Ag plasmon Bi3O4Cl photocatalyst for removal of emerging contaminants under visible light

Photocatalytic degradation has been extensively investigated toward the removal emerging contaminants (ECs) from water. In this study, a series of Ag-Bi₃O₄Cl plasmon photocatalysts were synthesized through the photo-deposition of metallic Ag on the Bi₃O₄Cl surface. The effects of plasmon modification on the catalytic performance of bismuth oxychlorides were analyzed. Ag addition did not alter the morphology of Bi₃O₄Cl. With the increasing Ag content, the number of oxygen defects on the catalyst surface first increased and then decreased. Moreover, the surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag suppressed the recombination of electron-hole pairs, promoting the migration and separation of photocarriers and improving the light absorption efficiency. However, the addition of excessive Ag reduced the number of active sites on the Bi₃O₄Cl surface, hindering the catalytic degradation of pollutants. The optimal Ag-Bi₃O₄Cl photocatalyst (Ag ratio: 0.025; solution pH: 9; dosage: 0.8 g/L) achieved 93.8 and 94.9% removal of ciprofloxacin and tetrabromobisphenol A, respectively. The physicochemical and photoelectric properties of Ag-Bi₃O₄Cl were determined through various characterization techniques. This study demonstrates that introducing metallic Ag alters the electron transfer path of the catalyst, reduces the recombination rate of electron-hole pairs, and effectively improves the catalytic efficiency of Bi₃O₄Cl. Furthermore, the pathways of ciprofloxacin degradation products and their biotoxicity were revealed.

Chlortetracycline degradation performance and mechanism in the self-biased bio-photoelectrochemical system constructed with an oxygen-defect-rich BiVO4/Ni9S8 photoanode

Efficient photoelectrodes are highly desired in bio-photoelectrochemical systems (BPES). Herein, in this paper, the oxygen defect-rich BiVO₄/Ni₉S₈ photoanode was developed and coupled with a biocathode for enhanced chlortertracycline (CTC) degradation and current generation in the self-biased BPES. Characterization results showed that the optimized BiVO₄/Ni₉S₈-7 mg-150 °C NF exhibited the best photocatalytic activity, due to that the rich oxygen vacancies and Ni₉S₈ could significantly improve light absorption, enhance photo-generated carriers separation, and accelerate charges transfer. CTC (20 mg L^-1) removal efficiency from the BPES was about 1.3 times (82.3% vs 64.7%) of that from the unilluminated reactor, and current output (0.68 A m^-3) was about 7.6 times (0.09 A m^-3). The dominant species in genus level was Geobacter, which is capable of reducing nitroaromatics and in favor of reductive dehalogenation of CTC. Besides, Comamonas and Rhodopseudomonas that are capable of degrading antibiotics were also detected. Possible degradation pathways and mechanism of CTC degradation in the BPES were proposed. This research advances the development of photoelectrode materials for light-driven BPESs and enriches antibiotics degradation mechanism.

First-Principle Insight Into the Effects of Oxygen Vacancies on the Electronic, Photocatalytic, and Optical Properties of Monoclinic BiVO4(001)

In this paper, first-principle calculations were performed to investigate the effects of oxygen (O) vacancies (Ovac) on the crystal structure, electronic distribution, adsorption energies of O2 and H2O and the density of states (DOS) of monoclinic bismuth vanadate (m-BiVO4). Ovac were stable when incorporated into m-BiVO4(001) and increased the adsorption energy of O2. Ovac changed the V3d orbitals of m-BiVO4(001) by adding a new band gap level, causing the redundant electrons of V atoms to become carriers and promoting the separation efficiency of electrons and holes. To verify the first-principle calculations, m-BiVO4 with different Ovac levels was prepared via hydrothermal synthesis. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns confirmed the existence of the (001) crystal surface of m-BiVO4. In addition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy of m-BiVO4 confirmed the presence of Ovac and demonstrated that, as the Ovac level increased, the number of superoxide radicals (O 2 - · ) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) produced increased. In addition, m-BiVO4 with a higher Ovac level possessed superior photocatalytic properties to and degraded rhodamine B (RhB) dye nearly 2-fold faster than m-BiVO4 with a lower Ovac level. Finally, the removal rate of RhB increased from 23 to 44%. All experimental results were in good agreement with the first-principle calculated results.

Green synthesis of Ag/TiO2 composite coated porous vanadophosphates with enhanced visible-light photo-degradation and catalytic reduction performance for removing organic dyes

As environmental pollution and energy shortages have become global concerns, the construction of highly efficient catalysts using facile and green methods remains a long-term goal. In the present study, we proposed a facile catalyst preparation method in which Ag/TiO₂ composites were coated on the surface of the porous pure inorganic crystalline vanadium phosphates (VPO) by a one-step strategy. More importantly, the in situ reduction of Ag nanoparticles was achieved at room temperature without severe conditions or hydrogen atmosphere in which the porous VPO was employed as the reductant. The prepared Ag/VPO@TiO₂ composites act as a class of efficient bifunctional catalysts for visible light photodegradation of MB molecules and catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol (4-NP). Among these samples, the 6.82%Ag/VPO@TiO₂ composite exhibited a superior photocatalytic activity in the degradation of MB and an ultrafast reduction rate for 4-NP of about 0.1 mM/40 s. The photocatalytic mechanistic studies revealed that the encapsulated VPO with a narrow band gap not only efficiently enhances the photosensitivity of the TiO₂ but also largely facilitates the photogenerated charge separation. The subsequent deposition of Ag NPs is able to further promote electron transfer ability, which leads to the higher photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the contact of Ag NPs with the surface of semiconductor TiO₂ can result in an electron-enhanced area in their interface that could effectively facilitate the uptake of electrons by the 4-NP molecules and then improve the reduction activity.

Bio-photoelectrochemcial system constructed with BiVO4/RGO photocathode for 2,4-dichlorophenol degradation: BiVO4/RGO optimization, degradation performance and mechanism

A single-chamber bio-photoelectrochemical system (BPES) constructed with BiVO₄/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) photocathode was proposed for 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) degradation under simulated solar irradiation. The BiVO₄/RGO (B/G) composites were synthesized, optimized and characterized by various techniques to analyze their physico-chemical and photocatalytic properties. Results showed that B/G (5 wt% - 9 h - 150 °C) exhibited the best photocatalytic activity for 2,4-DCP degradation, which was 1.5 times of that of BiVO₄, due to its better light absorption, faster electrons transfer, and more efficient photo-generated e^- - h⁺ separation. Reactive species trapping experiments revealed that ·OH was the main radical leading to 2,4-DCP degradation, and h⁺ also influenced 2,4-DCP removal. The 2,4-DCP (20 mg/L) removal rate and current output from the illuminated BPES were much higher than those of the unilluminated reactor (68.5 % vs. 41.8 %, 60.31 A/m³ vs. 40.07 A/m³) in 24 h, and the cathode potential was more negative, indicating that photocathode catalytic process was favorable to pollutants degradation and energy generation. Intermediates of 2,4-DCP degradation in the BPES were identified, and accordingly, possible degradation pathway and mechanism were proposed. This research advanced the development of efficient photocathode and mechanism of recalcitrant wastewater treatment in the BPES.
