Building surface defects by doping with transition metal on ultrafine TiO2 to enhance the photocatalytic H2 production activity

Insight into mechanism for remarkable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of Cu/Pr dual atom co-modified TiO2

The development of high-activity photocatalysts is crucial for the current large-scale development of photocatalytic hydrogen applications. Herein, we have developed a strategy to significantly enhance the hydrogen photocatalytic activity of Cu/Pr di-atom co-modified TiO2 architectures by selectively anchoring Cu single atoms on the oxygen vacancies of the TiO2 surface and replacing a trace of Ti atoms in the bulk with rare earth Pr atoms. Calculation results demonstrated that the synergistic effect between Cu single atoms and Pr atoms regulates the electronic structure of Cu/Pr-TiO2, thus promoting the separation of photogenerated carriers and their directional migration to Cu single atoms for the photocatalytic reaction. Furthermore, the d-band center of Cu/Pr-TiO2, which is located at -4.70 eV, optimizes the adsorption and desorption behavior of H*. Compared to TiO2, Pr-TiO2, and Cu/TiO2, Cu/Pr-TiO2 displays the best H* adsorption Gibbs free energy (-0.047 eV). Furthermore, experimental results confirmed that the photogenerated carrier lifetime of Cu/Pr-TiO2 is not only the longest (2.45 ns), but its hydrogen production rate (34.90 mmol g-1 h-1) also significantly surpasses those of Cu/TiO2 (13.39 mmol g-1 h-1) and Pr-TiO2 (0.89 mmol g-1 h-1). These findings open up a novel atomic perspective for the development of optimal hydrogen activity in dual-atom-modified TiO2 photocatalysts.

Synthesis of Oxygen Deficient TiO2 for Improved Photocatalytic Efficiency in Solar Radiation

The photocatalytic activities of TiO2 have been limited mainly to absorbing in the ultraviolet spectrum which accounts for only 5% of solar radiation. High energy band gap and electron recombination in TiO2 nanoparticles are responsible for its limitations as a photocatalyst. An oxygen deficient surface can be artificially created on the titanium oxide by zero valent nano iron through the donation of its excess electrons. A visible light active TiO2 nanoparticle was synthesized in the current investigation through simple chemical reduction using sodium boro-hydride. The physical and textural properties of the synthesized oxygen deficient TiO2 photocatalyst was measured using scanning/ transmission electron microscopy while FTIR, XRD and nitrogen sorption methods (BET) were employed for its further characterizations. Photochemical decoloration of orange II sodium dye solution in the presence of the synthesized TiO2 was measured using an UV spectrophotometer. The resulting oxygen deficient TiO2 has a lower energy band-gap, smaller pore sizes, and enhanced photo-catalytic properties. The decoloration (88%) of orange (II) sodium salt solution (pH 2) under simulated solar light was possible at 20 min. This study highlights the effect of surface oxygen defects, crystal size and energy band-gap on the photo-catalytical property of TiO2 nanoparticles as impacted by nano zero valent iron. It opens a new window in the exploitation of instability in the dopant ions for creation of a visible light active TiO2 photocatalyst.

Structure-Activity Relationship of Defective Metal-Based Photocatalysts for Water Splitting: Experimental and Theoretical Perspectives

Photocatalytic water splitting is promising for hydrogen energy production using solar energy and developing highly efficient photocatalysts is challenging. Defect engineering is proved to be a very useful strategy to promote the photocatalytic performance of metal-based photocatalysts, however, the vital role of defects is still ambiguous. This work comprehensively reviews point defective metal-based photocatalysts for water splitting, focusing on understanding the defects' disorder effect on optical adsorption, charge separation and migration, and surface reaction. The controllable synthesis and tuning strategies of defective structure to improve the photocatalytic performance are summarized, then the characterization techniques and density functional theory calculations are discussed to unveil the defect structure, and analyze the defects induced electronic structure change of catalysts and its ultimate effect on the photocatalytic activity at the molecular level. Finally, the challenge in developing more efficient defective metal-based photocatalysts is outlined. This work may help further the understanding of the fundamental role of defect structure in the photocatalytic reaction process and guide the rational design and fabrication of highly efficient and low-cost photocatalysts.
